Janitors play an important role. You’d never think of hiring one without interviewing the applicants face-to-face. At the very least you would do your best to determine who’d be most likely to be an asset instead of a liability; who would show up on time, and not be an embarrassment to your firm. If you’re smart, you’ll interview as many janitorial candidates as possible, and gather as much information as possible before making your choice. Should hiring a congressman be so much less rigorous than our process for hiring janitors, or cashiers, or…anything else? This is no joke. We The People are in terrible trouble in no small part because we make life and death choices with terrible, shallow, irrelevant and even false information. We hire by labels, slogans, words written by people who aren’t even applying for the job, with money from you-know-very-well-where. I am applying for the job of Indiana’s 8th US Congressional district Representative. This job is important enough that there should be serious, in-depth and in-person job interviews with tough questions and non-scripted answers. Voters should see what their options really are; not just the crafted “message†and marketing that tainted money buys. I propose at least one public forum in each of CD 8’s 18+ counties; and I propose the format of the forums be designed to discourage canned speeches and maximize public interaction. And of course I propose that these forums include all candidates who will be on the ballot in 2014. I applaud the League of Women Voters for the televised debates they’ve sponsored for this district, and of course hope for another televised debate. But voters need all the information they can get; and they should have no excuses for not getting it. It is important; now more than ever.
EFD Assigns New Positions
With the temporary assignment of Battalion Chief Cliff Weaver to EMA Interim Director, Fire Chief Mike Connelly needed to fill the Chief Fire Marshal’s position within his Fire Prevention Division. Recently Chief Connelly promoted District Chief Dan Grimm to the temporary rank of Battalion Chief to assume those duties. Grimm, the longtime spokesperson for EFD, says he looks forward to the challenge but admitted he’ll miss his PIO role. “I’ve made a lot of friends in the media over the past 12 years†Grimm stated, “and I hope to run into them from time to time around townâ€.
District Chief Bruce Woodward assumes the Department’s PIO role today. You can reach District Chief Woodward at 436-4464 or by email; bwoodward@evansvillefiredepartment.com
Publishers Clearinghouse Scam
Another scam has recently begun to surface in southeastern Indiana and could very well be occurring statewide. Though not a new scam, it has been successful for the scammers in other areas of the United States. The scam works like this; a person will receive a phone call advising them they have placed second or third in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes and have won hundreds of thousands of dollars and they are asked to wire money via Western Union cover taxes and processing fees. DON’T FALL FOR THIS SCAM!
If you receive a call such as this, ask yourself this question, “Did I enter the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes?†If you didn’t enter or send anything in, how could you be a winner? If you did enter, check the phone number from which you received the call, particularly the area code. Visit http://www.bennetyee.org/ucsd-pages/area.html to get a listing of area codes. The most recent calls in southeastern Indiana originated from area code “876,†a Jamaican area code. If the area code is from outside the U.S., BEWARE!
The actual Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes winners are never contacted by phone and they do not have to pay any money up front to receive their cash prize. It is important to remember, if you fall for one of these scams and send money to some location within the U.S, it’s nearly impossible for U.S. law enforcement to recover the money and locate the scammers. If the money is sent outside the United States, there is absolutely nothing U.S. law enforcement can do to help you recover your loss. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. DON’T BE A VICTIM!!
IS IT TRUE September 10, 2013

IS IT TRUE that the article written by Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Christy Gillenwater that referred to downtown Evansville as a “ghost town†and stating that “we need a plan, we need a time line, and we need a leader†was published by the Evansville Courier and Press on September 3, 2013?…her backtrack article where she referred to Mayor Winnecke as a “visionary†was published on Sunday September 8, 2013?…in a search of the CP under the name Gillenwater the tag line for the first article is still on record but when you click on the article a Code 404 error comes up?…that means that the CP has sanitized their own website and removed the “ghost town†article?…it seems as though there is a concerted effort to going on to keep the “ghost town†article from ever being read again?…negative feedback that is presented in a constructive manner describes the “ghost town†article very well and it is counterproductive to try and propagandize that article out of circulation?
IS IT TRUE that another of the SNEGAL (sneaky but legal) acts of the Weinzapfel Administration that has been carried forth by the Winnecke Administration has been presented to the City Council and is about to result in the right thing being done?…Klenck Construction who cleared the lot where someday we all hope a hotel will be and got stiffed by Woodruff Hospitality LLC for work done on the City of Evansville owned lot?…Councilman John Friend has been pushing for Klenck Construction to be paid the $355,000 that they earned prevailed last night when the Evansville City Council voted 9 – 0 to pay Klenck for their work on the lot?…it was good to see justice done and to see SNEGAL’s ugly work overturned?
IS IT TRUE in another big oversight of the Weinzapfel Administration part of the $37.5 Million that the City of Evansville is now expected to spend to get a hotel is to provide storage that should have been part of the Ford Center design and construction?…this building is going to cost the people of Evansville over $5 Million and it should have been part of the $127 Million spent on the Ford Center?…the CCO thinks that all of the funds that are coming back due to overbilling and all political contributions that were paid to the Weinzapfel for Mayor campaign should be used to pay for this storage space?…any dollars that the Ford Center was under budget should be applied to this gross oversight?…whoever designed a building that has insufficient storage and called it a modern arena needs to have their head examined?
IS IT TRUE a portion of the funds that the City of Evansville gets annually from Tropicana and affectionately called “Riverboat Money†is planned to be used for payments on the debt incurred to pay HCW to build a hotel in downtown Evansville?…this is a direct taking of taxes from the hands of a taxpaying business that employs more than 1,000 people in Evansville and giving it to a direct competitor in the same area?…Dunn Hospitality as we know has heartburn over this issue but what is being done to Tropicana really is a direct act of taxing McDonalds to give money to Burger King?…this sends a very rotten message to businesses everywhere that may have an interest in Evansville as a place to establish a branch plant?
IS IT TRUE we hope that the 2012 audit is completed and that it is fully established that the City of Evansville can balance their books before any vote on a hotel giveaway is held?…this is the only responsible thing to do?…we also hope that the eventual location of the IU Medical School is known before a vote is held because if the IU Medical School goes to the medical campus in Warrick County as is strongly rumored the size and nature of the hotel needed may be dramatically impacted?
Council Votes 8 -1 to Hire Crowe-Horwath to Vet Hotel Deal

As anticipated the Evansville City Council voted tonight by an 8 – 1 majority to hire the firm of Crowe-Horwath to VET the hotel development agreement that was previously approved by the Evansville Redevelopment Commission and touted by the Winnecke Administration as good to go.
The lone dissenting vote came from Councilman Jonathan Weaver who just last week called for a vote of approval prior to going forward with a Vetting contract.
No time frame was given for the completion of the vetting and no date was set to vote on the agreement. Councilman John Friend stated that some of the information needed to vet the agreement and the developer has not been supplied yet. The next scheduled meeting of the City Council is September 23.

Online Startup “LocationOffers.com” Cancels Chamber Membership over Hotel Support
In a letter to Chamber of Commerce of SW Indiana president and CEO Christy Gillenwater, Shahi Wadi-Ramahi the president of Evansville based online startup company LocationOffers.com has tendered the businesses termination of their membership in the chamber.
Citing that it is “mind boggling” that a leader of the Chamber of Commerce would openly support a non-member’s interest over the interest of a member, Wadi-Ramadi will also be recommending that other companies follow LocationOffers.com and Dunn Hospitality in terminating their memberships.
The letter of termination is on the link below.
EVANSVILLE MAKES A NEW SESAME STREET FRIEND
Evansville, Ind. – If you needed to ask someone to tell you how to get to Sesame Street this weekend, chances are they might have directed you to Evansville’s Ford Center. The beloved characters of Sesame Street Live: Make a New Friend took the stage for five performances Friday, September 6 through Sunday, September 8. Many familiar life-sized furry monsters from the popular television show made appearances in a story about making new friends and appreciating the ones you have. Life lessons were accompanied by music, bright lights, dancing and more. During songs that parodied everything from Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger†to the Bollywood staple “Jai Ho†many of the youngest members of the audience were out of their seats , bouncing and dancing along.
“Ford Center was the second stop of the tour of this brand new Sesame Street Live show, and we think it is a good sign that another family-oriented production company felt comfortable coming to Evansville so early on in their run,†said Executive Director Scott Schoenike. “We are looking forward to another full season of events for all ages here at the Ford Center.â€
The Ford Center is gearing back up for a busy event season with Rascal Flatts October 12, Lady Antebellum November 10, and the Bill Gaither Christmas Homecoming Tour 2013 December 13. The Evansville IceMen hockey and the University of Evansville Men’s and Women’s basketball seasons will kick off in October.

Vitamin D Deficiency – Is It Epidemic Yet?
By
Roy M. Arnold, MD
A study published in the journal “Nutritional Research†in 2011 found a substantial prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency among a large sample of US adults. Forty-two percent of those tested had a level less than 20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL.) A significant additional number had insufficient levels between 20 and 29. Those most likely to be deficient were older, had darker skin, were overweight, consumed lower amounts of dairy and spent a great deal of time indoors.
Since opening my practice in April, I have identified about one new case of Vitamin D deficiency per month. This incidence is high enough that I now routinely screen for it in older adults and in women of child-bearing age. Many people who are identified with low levels had no symptoms, while others complained only of vague symptoms such as low energy, generalized aches and pain or poor motivation.
Vitamin D has often been called “the sunshine Vitamin†because our skin can manufacture it when we spend time outdoors in the sun. With our concerns over skin cancer from sun exposure and with our modern indoor lifestyle, many people simply don’t manufacture enough to maintain a healthy level. The food you eat is the best source for most vitamins and minerals that your body needs, but there isn’t enough Vitamin D in food to meet your body’s requirements. There are only 2 ways to meet Vitamin D requirements: Expose your bare skin to direct sunlight, or take supplements.
What does Vitamin D do in the body? First and foremost Vitamin D is vital for strong bones. Calcium and phosphorus are used by the body to build strong bones. Without enough Vitamin D, these minerals cannot be absorbed into the body. Deficiency in children causes a condition called Rickets where the long bones are very soft and become deformed causing bowing. In adults, deficiency can contribute to softening of the bones and make us prone to fractures of the hip, wrist and spine.
Beyond its vital effect on the bones, Vitamin D is also essential for immune function, muscle function, cardiovascular and respiratory health, brain development and can fight certain types of cancer. Researchers are constantly discovering new information about how Vitamin D affects our bodies. Thus far there is evidence that a lack of vitamin D has been associated with certain types of cancer, asthma, type-II diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, Alzheimer’s and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s and type-I diabetes.
Let’s look at some of the evidence: The strongest evidence for Vitamin D deficiency being associated with cancer is in colorectal cancer. There is an inverse relationship between serum levels of Vitamin D and the likelihood or colorectal cancer development, that is to say the lower the level, the more likely the patient will develop colorectal cancer. There is a growing body of evidence of an association between breast cancer and low Vitamin D levels. There is also some evidence that cancer patients often
have low levels but the evidence is not yet developed that shows raising the level decreases the rate of growth of the cancer.
In several studies, low Vitamin D levels were associated with high blood pressure and indirectly with its end organ damage – strokes and heart attacks.
Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to insulin resistance and therefore indirectly to obesity and Type II diabetes.
Immune-related diseases like multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Type I diabetes may be associated with Vitamin D deficiency because the vitamin has been found to bind to the specific gene sites associated with these disorders. More research is necessary before any conclusions can be drawn about the effects of Vitamin D on the diseases themselves.
A large meta-analysis published last year in the journal Neurology concluded that lower Vitamin D levels were linked to lower cognition and dementia in elderly adults. One early study even reported a regression of the Alzheimer’s plaques when the vitamin levels were corrected. Clearly, more research is needed in this area. Stay tuned.
Supplementation – If you decide to take a vitamin D supplement, most experts recommend taking 2,000-5,000 International Units daily. Make certain that the supplement is labeled “Vitamin D3.†It is not wise to exceed 5,000 units per day since excess levels of Vitamin D can cause problems with kidney stones, kidney failure, gastrointestinal problems, poor balance, or confusion. Persons identified with Vitamin D deficiency often need medical supervision and monitoring of the Vitamin D levels to ensure they are completely corrected. If you have concerns about your Vitamin D levels by all means discuss them with your primary health provider.
