While we are excited about our newly-expanded publishing format, we will be keeping our basic mission to inform, educate, and entertain and continue to provide it to our readers cost-free.

We are pleased to announce that our daily online user-friendly and professional-looking layout, with informational headlines added to our regular features section, is a big success among our readers.

In fact, our daily online paper is more reader-friendly than ever before because you can now print copies of the articles that we publish in our online publication.

We are also especially proud to have the ability to post as many as seven “breaking news” articles at one time.

Our local sports section has gone beyond the regular basketball and baseball coverage because we have added other sports to our sports section.

Rest assured that our reader’s comments remain a valued part of CCO. We will also continue to offer the public a chance to keep their identities confidential as they tell us their concerns because we understand that there are some people who are in a position that makes it necessary to maintain anonymity. As always, we want to hear what the public believes is important to improving our community whether it is done under a person’s own name or a pseudonym. We only ask that you avoid making personal attacks on other posters and stay on topic. Our highly-prized confidential contributors  (“Moles”) continue to provide us with breaking news before it is leaked to other news sources.

The primary reason for making our most popular features available through an easy-to-use link is that we want to appeal to a wider range of readers and advertisers.  We have opened the door to growing our publication, readers, and advertisers while keeping it free to the public. Our advertisers are pleased to see that the new format is offering a lot of “bang” for their advertising buck. As a part of our continued commitment to “home-owned and homegrown” local businesses, we now can offer small businesses with small advertising budgets an opportunity to spread the word about their goods and services throughout the area. Larger businesses will have the chance to keep in touch with their customers at a reasonable cost.

We are excited to take a new step to a print Monthly edition of the CCO and it has helped make our online version appeal to more readers. Even more, we are proud to be the only local news outlet to inform, educate, and entertain our readers at no cost.  Oh, we also have a “MOBILE” edition of the City-County Observer at no cost.

The current special session called by the governor features some of the most ill-conceived and divisive legislation in the state’s history.

A special session originally called to ensure Hoosiers got back a portion of the state’s $6 billion budget surplus for “inflation relief” has turned into a session of controversy and emotionally-charged efforts to limit access to women’s health care services through a ban on all abortions: Senate Bill 1.

If you want to share your opinion about Senate Bill 1 in person at the Statehouse, here is some information you will need to know:

  • Senate Bill 1 will be heard in a House Committee on Tuesday, August 2, beginning at 9 a.m. EDT.
  • The hearing will be held in the House Chamber on the Third Floor of the Statehouse, which is located at 200 W. Washington St. [get a map] in downtown Indianapolis.
  • Arrive at the Statehouse early. If you are driving, you will need to find on-street or garage parking somewhere in the vicinity of the Statehouse [get a map].
  • Public access to the Statehouse is provided on the east and west (and sometimes south) sides of the building. Be prepared to walk through a metal detector as you enter.
  • Sign-up sheets will be available for those who wish to testify. Please be advised, however, that it is difficult to predict how many persons the Republican committee chairman may allow to actually testify during the committee hearing. Public testimony on Senate Bill 1 was severely limited when the bill was heard in the Senate Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee.

EVANSVILLE – More than half of the University of Evansville softball team was honored for their efforts in the classroom by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, it was announced on Monday morning.10 Aces were named to the Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete list, an honor given to softball student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5-or-higher during the 2021-22 academic year.

The Aces were also one of 150 teams in the nation with a GPA of 3.0-or-higher as a team, generating a 3.364 GPA as a team.The rankings and honors recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across the Association’s membership categories. In all, more than 7,500 student-athletes were honored with NCAA Division I student-athletes representing 2,155 of the honors. Team GPAs and scholar-athletes are submitted by member head coaches.

Consumer Alert: Products Recalled in July

Attorney General Todd Rokita reminds Hoosiers to be aware of products recalled in July. Consumers should take full advantage of the solutions available for those who purchased the recalled items.   

“Summer is a time to be outdoors, but that time should be spent safely with well-made products. This month’s list has several items you might find in your own backyard. Hoosiers should be aware of potential danger and solutions available for these recalled items,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Consumer protection is one of my office’s top priorities. If you have difficulty finding a resolution, call my office for help.”

Cross Country Announces 2022 Schedule

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Brooks LeCompte announced the 2022 cross country schedule on Thursday, a five-meet slate that includes the 20th-annual University of Evansville Invitational in mid-October.

LeCompte’s first season as head coach at UE will begin in Terre Haute, Indiana, as Evansville will kick off the 2022 campaign at the John McNichols Invitational on Saturday, September 17.  The UE men will take the course at 8 a.m. in the 8-K event, before the women will compete in a 5-K at 8:45 a.m. central time.

“With this being my first cross country season at Evansville, I felt it would be best to start our season a couple of weeks later than normal,” said LeCompte.  “This will allow for some much-needed time for me to get a good grasp of where the student-athletes are at fitness-wise to ensure that we aren’t getting ahead of ourselves, and time for them to adjust to the new training stimulus.”

The season will continue on Saturday, October 1 when the Purple Aces take part in one of the nation’s largest cross country events with the annual Live In Lou Classic in Louisville, Kentucky.  Last year, over a thousand runners and nearly 100 schools from the various NCAA and NAIA levels competed in three races at the Live In Lou Classic.

Evansville will then return home to the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course to host the 20th-annual University of Evansville Invitational on Saturday, October 15.  The men’s 8-K race will kick-off the UE Invite at 10 a.m., with the women’s 5-K race set to begin at 10:45.

“I am really excited to be able to host the 20th-annual UE Invitational,” said LeCompte.  “The Angel Mounds course was one of my favorite courses to visit as a visiting coach, and to now be able to host an event there is exciting.”

The 2022 season will then conclude in the same place that it started, as both the Missouri Valley Conference and NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships will take place in Terre Haute, Indiana.  The Valley Championships will take place on Friday, October 28, with the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals taking place two weeks later on Friday, November 11.
