USI hopes to close out road trip sweep

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team hopes to close out its longest road trip of the year with a sweep when it visits William Jewell College Friday at 5 p.m. in Liberty, Missouri, and Rockhurst University Sunday at noon in Kansas City, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles have won four-straight matches after sweeping the first half of its road trip last weekend.

Following the end of the road trip, the Screaming Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field for a two-match homestand October 18 versus the University of Illinois Springfield and October 20 versus Lewis University.

Week 6 Eagle Notes: 

Eagles extend winning streak to four: The Eagles extended their winning streak to a season-best four matches after sweeping the first half of their road trip, defeating Southwest Baptist University and Drury University, 1-0.

Scoring Leaders: Junior forward Maggie Winter sits on top of the scoring column for USI with 10 points on four goals and two assists, while sophomore forward Katlyn Andres is second with nine points on four goals and one assist. USI has 20 goals by 12 different goal scorers and six different players with game winning goals.

Between the posts:  Freshman goalkeeper Maya Etienne leads the Eagles in goal with a 7-2-0 record, a 0.46 goals against average, six shutouts, and 41 saves.

GLVC Players of the Week: USI has had three GLVC Players of the Week this fall. Freshman goalkeeper Maya Etienne became the third player and the first defensive award winner last week, while junior forward Maggie Winter and junior defender Madelyne Juenger  have earned the offensive award earlier this year.

Schoenstein enters his 4th year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 36-21-7 mark, a share of a GLVC regular season title, and three-straight GLVC Tournament appearances.

William Jewell in 2019: The Cardinals of William Jewell are 2-7-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the GLVC after breaking a two-match losing streak with a win over Maryville University last Sunday.

USI vs. William Jewell: USI and WJC are tied 4-4-0 in the all-time series with the Eagles winning the last two, 2-0 last season at Strassweg Field and 1-0 in 2017 in Liberty. USI junior defender Madelyne Juenger and forward Kennedy Moore had the goals in last year’s victory.

Rockhurst in 2019:  Rockhurst, who received votes for the top 25 after falling from 13th last week, is 8-1-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the GLVC. The Hawks’ only loss came to Maryville University last weekend.

USI vs. Rockhurst: Rockhurst has had the upper hand with the Eagles all-time, leading 12-2-2. USI broke a seven-match winless streak to Rockhurst, 1-0, during the 2018 regular season match on a goal by sophomore forward Katlyn Andres and tied the Hawks, 0-0 in double-overtime during the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament. Rockhurst earned the right to advance in the GLVC Tournament on penalty kicks.
