UE Men’s soccer returns to Valley play against Northern Illinois

0
The Aces will play only their third program game against the Huskies on Saturday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The University of Evansville men’s soccer team gets to play its first home match of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) season against a new conference opponent.
The Aces return to conference play this weekend as they welcome Northern Illinois to Arad McCutchan Stadium for the first time in six years. NIU is a new addition to the Valley in men’s soccer in 2023. In the team’s previous meetings, the Aces picked up two wins four years apart. UE has only played the Huskies twice in program history and has a 7-3 goal advantage.

On Tuesday night Evansville held the No. 10 team in the nation scoreless for 78 minutes in a close 2-0 loss to Louisville. A goal in the final 15 minutes of play broke the scoreless tie towards Louisville. It was the first game all season the Aces were shut out by an opponent. UE has averaged 1.63 goals per game with their highest output coming against Southern Indiana with 4 goals.

The Huskies come into Saturday’s game with a 2-5 record, recording wins against Western Illinois and Aurora (Division III). NIU’s lone MVC game so far was a loss to No. 9 Missouri State last weekend. The Huskies were shut out by the Bears 3-0 for only their second game not finding the back of the net. Northern Illinois is led on the field by junior forward Taisei Arima and senior midfielder Eddie Knight with seven points each. Knight leads the team in goals along with fellow midfielder Camilio Estrada with three goals.

Evansville defender Nacho Diaz-Caneja is currently on a seven-game shot streak, recording one in all but his first game as a Purple Ace. Of the seven games, Diaz-Caneja has put a shot on goal in 4. UE’s most accurate player midway through the season is midfielder Carlos Barcia, putting 85.7% of his shots on target while midfielder Jose Vivas leads the team in shots with 14. The Aces’ other shots leader, forward Nacho Diaz Barragan, has been sidelined for the foreseeable future with a meniscus tear.

UE will be celebrating Family Weekend on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off from McCutchan Stadium on the 23rd is set for 7 p.m.

No. 18 Vincennes Volleyball completes daily sweep on first day of Wallace State Fall Bash

0

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The No. 18-ranked Vincennes University Volleyball team hit the road this weekend to take part in the Wallace State C.C. Fall Bash and were immediately met with back-to-back matches against NJCAA Division II Receiving Votes teams, Roane State and Enterprise State.

The Blazers came away with two three-set sweeps, winning over Roane State 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 and Enterprise State 25-19, 25-22, 25-22.

VU faced a tough challenge early against NJCAA Division II RV Roane State Community College from Harriman, Tenn., near Knoxville, who entered the day unbeaten.

The Trailblazers had to get into game condition quickly after the long bus ride down to Alabama and were able to do so on their way to a three-set victory over the Lady Raiders 25-17, 25-20, 25-18.

“It was an awesome job by the team as we literally got off the bus about two hours before the game after being on it for over six hours,” VUVB Head Coach Gary Sien said. “It was a matter of taking out some of their key hitters with our serving and blocking. I know we say that all the time but those aspects are hard to maintain for every match against every team.”

“We were able to put a block up and force Roane State to either tip or hit shots we were able to get up and put away in transition,” Sien added. “And the serving was relentless as we went after certain passers.”

The VU offense was led by sophomore Paige Parlanti (Las Vegas, Nev.) who finished the first game of the day with 16 kills, six digs, two aces and one block.

Freshman Laura Tavares (Meridia, Venezuela) also reached double-figure kills against Roane State, ending with 11 kills, five digs, two blocks and one ace.

Freshman Isadora Dias (Rio Grande de Norte, Brazil) finished with four kills and seven digs, while fellow freshman Elisa Dalla Pozza (Vincenza, Italy) had three kills, four blocks, an outstanding four aces and one set assist.

Sophomore Kennedy Sowell (Effingham, Ill.) rounded out the offense with two kills and one block.

Sophomore setter Maecy Johnson (Chrisman, Ill.) ran the offense on her way to 29 set assists, four digs and one block.

Sophomore libero Morgan Netcott (Montague, Mich.) headed the Trailblazer back row defense with a team-high 19 digs and two set assists.

Freshman Grace Flexter (Oblong, Ill.) also added some help defensively, ending with six digs and one set assist.

Vincennes then had to turn around and face another NJCAA Division II Receiving Votes opponent, their second of three on the weekend, in Enterprise State Community College from Enterprise, Ala.

VU got off to a slow start in set one of this match, with the Boll Weevils building a three-point lead before Vincennes used a 6-0 scoring run to take a 10-7 advantage.

ESCC would battle back to even the score at 11-11 and later at 18-18 before VU used a late 5-0 run to come away with the first set victory 25-19 and take an early 1-0 match lead.

The Blazers looked to carry this momentum into set two and grabbed the early advantage before Enterprise State evened the score at 10-10.

VU would again build a five-point lead before ESCC answered back to cut the deficit to one at 19-18.

Vincennes continued to battle and would not allow Enterprise State to put together any sort of late scoring run as VU held on to take set two 25-22 and earn a 2-0 match lead.

Set three was more of the same back-and-forth battle we had seen so far, with Enterprise State this time gaining the early upper hand with a 13-10 lead.

VU would answer back and even the score at 14-14 before using a 7-1 scoring run to take a 23-18 lead.

Enterprise State continued to fight however, scoring three unanswered, but it wasn’t enough as Vincennes took set three 25-22 and earned their second three-set sweep of the day and 13th consecutive victory.

“Enterprise played us tough as we had to stop another group of hitters right after the first match,” Sien said. “They blocked us a bit so we had to work around that in our offense. The team persevered and got through two very tough opponents in just over three hours. I think we had the game under control the majority of time as we didn’t let either teams make significant scoring runs in any set.”

The VU offense was again led by Paige Parlanti, who finished the night with a big double-double with 17 kills, 13 digs and three blocks.

Laura Tavares was second on the kills list, filling the stats sheet with eight kills, seven digs, three blocks, one set assist and one ace.

Isadora Dias came away with six kills, six digs and two blocks, while Elisa Dalla Pozza finished the night with five kills, six digs and a team-high five blocks.

Kennedy Sowell rounds out the VU offense, finishing the game with two kills and three blocks.

Maecy Johnson again helped set up the offense, finishing with 34 set assists, four kills, one block and one dig.

Morgan Netcott again patrolled the back row defense with a team-high 17 digs and one set assist.

The Trailblazers will look to close out the weekend on a high note tomorrow, Sept. 23 when VU faces Calhoun Community College at 10 a.m. eastern, before ending the weekend against NJCAA Division II RV and Fall Bash host Wallace State Community College at 12 p.m. eastern.

“We will have to duplicate the same toughness as we displayed in getting these two sweeps, maybe more so tomorrow,” Sien said. “Calhoun beat Roane State earlier today and Wallace State is obviously the host team. As stated previously, we need a fast start and to readily use our length and athletic abilities in these matches.”

SENATOR BRAUN INTRODUCE BILL TO STOP BIDEN FROM IMPOSING GUN CONTROL

1

WASHINGTON – Senator Mike Braun and 20 Republican Senators introduced a bill today to prevent the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services from declaring a public health emergency to impose gun control.

The Protecting the Right to Keep and Bear Arms Act is cosponsored by Senators Thom Tillis, Kevin Cramer, Jim Risch, Mike Crapo, Cynthia Lummis, Joni Ernst, Cindy Hyde-Smith, John Hoeven, Steve Daines, Ted Budd, Roger Wicker, Rick Scott, Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley, John Thune, Mike Rounds, Joni Ernst, Markwayne Mullin, Ted Cruz, and JD Vance.

Earlier this month, the Governor of New Mexico instituted a public health emergency for the purposes of suspending the 2nd Amendment-protected carrying of firearms. This comes after years of activist groups encouraging the Biden administration, specifically HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, to take the same path to impose gun control by executive fiat.

Senator Braun previously introduced this measure as a bill in 2021 and as an amendment in July of this year.

Just this week, the Washington Post reported that the Biden administration plans to create a new Office of Gun Violence Prevention in response to “stalled” progress in Congress. A high-profile activist from the Community Justice Action Fund will serve a key role for the new office: an organization dedicated to declaring a national gun violence public health emergency as one of its three policy planks.

“Many said that public health emergencies would not be abused to impose gun control, but after we saw the vast expansion of executive power during COVID and the New Mexico Governor use a public health emergency to effectively suspend the 2nd Amendment in her state, no one can doubt that this needs to be addressed,” said Senator Mike Braun. “We need to set into law that no one can remove the right to defend ourselves and our families with the stroke of a pen.”

“It’s simple: terrorist attacks are national emergencies, and pandemics are public health emergencies; guns are neither. Using legitimate presidential power as a backdoor to violate the Second Amendment is disingenuous at best and diminishes the gravity of real emergencies,” said Senator Cramer.

“The illegal action by the Governor of New Mexico to suspend the 2nd Amendment through a public health emergency should be concerning to every American,” said Senator Tillis. “I am deeply concerned that this stunt might be replicated on the national level by a left-wing politician in an effort to enact gun control, and Congress must take action to prevent that from ever happening. I am proud to co-introduce this legislation that would stop that from ever happening so we can protect the Constitutional rights of North Carolinians.”

“The unconstitutional actions by the governor of New Mexico demonstrate a clear need for our legislation, which would protect the second amendment rights of law-abiding Americans and prevent the president and HHS Secretary from issuing a similar, overreaching public health emergency,” said Senator John Hoeven.

“Democrats seem confused, but the Constitution is clear – the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” said Daines.“Washington bureaucrats will do anything to promote their gun-grabbing agenda, including abusing public health emergencies. I won’t stand for it, and I will always protect Montanans’ Second Amendment rights.”

“No emergency declaration will fix the senseless policies that are fueling the violent crime surge in blue cities and states.  The use of such a declaration would be an abuse of the power to declare emergencies, violate the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun owners, and, worse, further erode public confidence in those who govern them,” Hyde-Smith said.

“Abusing national and public health emergency powers for purposes of exercising excessive government control to strip Americans’ Second Amendment right is a clear attempt to circumvent the U.S. Constitution,” said Crapo.  “We must not allow creative government bureaucrats to abridge this right while we seek to prevent violence perpetrated by criminals.”

“Americans have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and no disaster or emergency declared by bureaucrats can circumvent that right,”Wicker said. “I will fight any attempt by this Administration to make an end run around the Constitution.”

“President Biden cannot be allowed to manufacture a crisis as an excuse to confiscate guns from people in Wyoming,” said Lummis. “The Protecting the Right to Keep and Bear Arms Act affirms that the federal government cannot infringe on Wyoming gunowners’ freedoms. Gun ownership boosts safety and any attempt to limit gun ownership is a win for criminals.”

Senator Rick Scott said, “Democrats’ latest attempt to implement a flat-out ban on Americans’ 2nd Amendment rights in New Mexico under a dubious ‘public health order’ is unconstitutional. We cannot let the Biden administration attempt a similar executive action to strip the fundamental rights of our citizens. Our Protecting the Right to Keep and Bear Arms Act keeps this administration in check and accountable.”

“President Biden should not be able to attack the Constitutional rights of law-abiding gunowners by imposing a so-called ‘emergency’ of his own making. As he continues to shred the Constitution and blatantly attempt to circumvent Congress, I am preventing him from taking away Iowans’ Second Amendment rights.” – Sen. Joni Ernst

Attorney General Todd Rokita warns Hoosiers to beware of scammers sending texts and emails claiming shipping and delivery issues

Attorney General Todd Rokita is advising Hoosiers to watch for texts and emails informing them of shipping-and-delivery issues with items they supposedly have ordered.

Scammers are flooding inboxes with these false claims in an effort to steal personal information and/or lure victims into unknowingly downloading malware onto their computers or phones.

“Our team works hard to bring scammers to justice,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Working with partners in law enforcement, we’re regularly catching and prosecuting more of these criminals. At the same time, another big part of our mission is raising awareness among all Hoosiers about these various scams so they can spot them and avoid falling into their traps.”

The fraudulent emails and texts often contain links purported to help the consumer track a package — when in reality those links connect to malicious websites.

These scam messages typically appear to come from such sources as Amazon, FedEx, the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and others.

An example of such a text received by an Indiana resident is below.

If you receive an email or text of this nature, DO NOT click on any links or reply in any manner.

Instead, if you believe there is any possibility such a message could be valid, simply contact the delivery carrier yourself by navigating to the appropriate website — without using any contact information provided in the suspicious text or email.

Anytime you believe you are the target of a scam attempt, you may file a complaint at in.gov/attorneygeneral/ or call 1-800-382-5516.
