Gibson County – Tuesday night, February 19, at approximately 7:47 p.m., Trooper John Davis was operating radar on S.R. 64 at Jackson Street in Oakland City when he stopped the driver of a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck for driving 47 mph in a 30 mph zone. The driver was identified as Joseph Tieken, 36, of Mt. Vernon. His 17-year-old girlfriend was a passenger. Trooper Davis detected an odor of burnt marijuana while talking to Tieken. During the traffic stop it was revealed that Tieken had been smoking marijuana earlier while driving. It was also determined that Tieken had allegedly given a small bag of marijuana to his girlfriend to hide in her shirt. Further investigation revealed his girlfriend had placed the marijuana inside her shirt just prior to Trooper Davis approaching the vehicle. Tieken was arrested and taken to the Gibson County Jail where he is currently being held on bond. The 17-year-old female was not arrested. Tieken was arrested in January 2012 for possessing marijuana.

Arrested and Charges:
• Joseph S. Tieken, 36, Mt. Vernon, In
1. Possession of Marijuana with a Prior Conviction
2. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Class A Misdemeanor

EVSC

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Coordinated School Health Team is working to make it easier for EVSC schools to make healthy choices when doing fundraising. The team would like to create a resource guide of healthy alternatives for fundraisers made up of area organizations and businesses with items that could be used to raise money for schools.

The team is looking to gather a list of fundraising ideas that are easy to manage, yet have a reasonable profit capability. Ideal fundraisers will include non-food items such as flowers, plants, mulch, jewelry, etc. and those that include healthy food choices. According to the team, having healthy fundraisers demonstrates the group’s commitment to promoting healthy behaviors both in and out of the school environment. Fundraisers that involve physical activity also are encouraged.

Companies and organizations that would like to be included in the resource guide are asked to contact Dawn Horton-Krack at 435-0202 or by email at dawn.horton-krack@evsc.k12.in.us by March 1. Law firms challenged to donate goods, raise money for regional food banks

INDIANAPOLIS – Attorney General Greg Zoeller teamed up with Feeding Indiana’s Hungry (FIsH) and the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) today to launch the fifth annual statewide March Against Hunger food drive competition.

Zoeller said there are 11 regional food banks in Indiana partnering with FIsH to help link resources to feed those in need. For the fifth consecutive year, the March Against Hunger food drive will challenge law firms to donate goods and raise money for these food banks.

“March Against Hunger is an opportunity to spread awareness about a growing problem and spotlight attorneys who go above and beyond to help their clients and their communities,” Zoeller said. “Hunger is preventable and that’s why we are calling on those in the law profession to lend their support.”

In 2012, 51 law firms participated in the March Against Hunger and donated more than 11,400 pounds of food and raised $51,822. Since 2009, food drive participants have donated more than 34,100 pounds of food and raised $127,167 total.

“As a fellow lawyer, I can’t say enough about Attorney General Zoeller’s commitment to serving Hoosiers in need,” said ISBA President Daniel B. Vinovich. “It is opportunities like this annual food drive that allow us to serve beyond our clients and I am so proud of the overwhelming contributions that pour in each year.”

“We are again thankful for Attorney General Zoeller’s commitment to helping Hoosiers in need, and Hoosier attorneys for rising to the challenge,” said Emily Weikert Bryant, executive director of FIsH. “One in six Hoosiers is at risk of hunger, and for children just one in four. We’ve not seen a decrease in demand and appreciate the support of the March Against Hunger drive to bring more meals to our member food banks to distribute across all 92 counties.”

To sign up to participate in this year’s statewide competition visit www.marchagainsthunger.org or www.in.gov/attorneygeneral. Totals and winners will be announced shortly after the deadline to donate which is March 31. Those not employed by a law firm can contribute nonperishable foods at a participating firm listed at www.in.gov/attorneygeneral or a FIsH food bank listed at www.feedingindianashungry.org

TWO ICE RACING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS UP FOR GRABS AT FORD CENTER THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!!

This Saturday night Casey’s General Stores Presents the Grand Finale of the 37th Annual World Championship ICE Racing Series in Evansville, IN. The two most sought after and coveted Titles in sport of arena ice racing are on the line this Saturday night at the beautiful Ford Center. Both professional racing divisions of the ICE/International Championship Events sanctioned 37th Annual World Championship ICE Racing Series have several riders still in contention to win it all! After seven previous Rounds in this winter’s coast to coast series of events it all boils down to who is the best and bravest in Evansville. This season produced one of the closest WC Points battles in many years.
The thoroughbreds of the sport are the Manufacturers World Cup Motorcycles. It takes courage as well as skill to ride one of these powerful, lightweight, state-of-the-art race bikes on ice. Three riders, with outstanding season performances, have positioned themselves to possibly win their first ever World Championship Title.
Jake “The Snake” Mataya from Blaine, MN holds a slim WC Points lead over Hasting, MI’s “Captain” Kirk Cheney and Tom “Freight Train” McGrane from Honeybrook, PA. Assuming they all make it through their Heat Races and Last Chance Qualifier races unscathed, the 8 rider, 8 lap Evansville Main Event will decide who wins the 2013 Ice Racing World Championship – a fight to the very end! Of course there are many other riders entered in this division who want to win this major event along with the cash and coveted “Big Stud” trophy. Such a win would set them up for good sponsorship in the 2014 ice racing season. One such racer is local Evansville pro rider Greg Childers running out of the Big 4 Cycle camp.

The wild and crazy ICE Unlimited Outlaw Quad Class will be more unpredictable than ever at this weekend’s event. It also comes down to three riders mathematically in the Title Chase. The “Kansas Tornadoes” Dusty “Time Bomb” Crouch from Topeka and Kevin “Cool Hand” Smith from Overbrook have battled back and forth for the points lead all season long. But now they have a tiger on their tail by the name of Mandy “Wild Child” Brodil from Poplar Branch, NC. Brodil is 5-Time & Defending World Champion in the Outlaw Quads and has been a great role model for young women and girls over the years. She is the most successful ice racer in the sport’s 37 year history. Last weekend in Trenton, NJ she was in true “Wild Child” form winning every race she started moving up to 3rd in WC Points and a chance to win her 6th Title. Making all this even more dramatic is that Mandy has hinted this may be her last ice racing season, Evansville her last event. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this special lady in action.
Other top Outlaws expected to compete this weekend are Kevin Veon from Red Oak, IA; Ryan Kaufman, Blaine and Ryan Jamison; on the100% American made Harley-Davidson powered “Thunder Quad” Brandon Davis; Shane Quam on his “Nitrous Shot Quad;” Chuck “The Ice Man” Calvert; Ken “Stuntman” Remer; Anthony “Jersey Boy”
Demeo; and Mandy’s dad Jeff, to name a few.
Along with the insane speeds and wild bump and grind action fans will see from the pros, all competing with razor sharp steel studded tires, they will also see select amateur classes designed to give locals a shot at fame and glory. Several special attractions will also be featured in Evansville including the incredible death defying Ring Of Fire Quad Jump!! Don’t miss THE GREATEST SPECTACLE ON ICE!TM starting at 7PM sharp Saturday at the Ford Center.
Family-priced tickets are on sale at the Ford Center Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster Outlets, www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-745-3000 or at the door Saturday. Exciting racing action the whole family will never forget!

Bucshon Introduces Bill to Cut Foreign Aid, Reduce Spending

2

bucshon

(Washington, DC) –Congressman Larry Bucshon introduced the “Invest in America First Act,” H.R. 528, which will prohibit foreign aid from being given to countries with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over $1.5 trillion. Congressman Bucshon released the following comment regarding his bill.

Congressman Bucshon (IN-08) states:

“Our nation’s debt has surpassed the $16 trillion mark and we now borrow 42 cents on every dollar we spend. As the House continues our work to cut spending and balance the budget, we need to focus on saving where it makes sense.

“The United States currently provides billions of dollars in foreign aid while we struggle to find the financial resources to live up to the commitments made to our own citizens. Many Americans have been asked to pay more in taxes just to see that money sent to foreign countries that quite frankly do not need it.

“It simply does not make sense for the United States to continue providing foreign aid to nations with large GDPs that often run budget surpluses and hold billions of our U.S. Treasury securities. We are giving them money, only to then borrow it back with interest.

“Hardworking Americans are cutting back and responsibly budgeting their resources, this bill is a necessary step for the government to do the same. We must stop mortgaging our children’s future to pay for irresponsible, unnecessary spending today. It’s time we put America first, and this legislation does that.”

BACKGROUND:

Full text of H.R. 528 can be accessed here.

The Invest in America First Act would prohibit Congress and the President from giving nonmilitary foreign aid to countries that have a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over $1.5 trillion. There are exemptions for humanitarian and security aid. Humanitarian aid could be given in the event of a natural disaster in the form of supplies and materials, but not just a lump sum of money. Security aid could be given to countries for security threats that are deemed dangerous to the national security of United States.

For instance, in Fiscal Year 2010, the U.S. gave China $27.2 million in foreign aid, even though they hold over $1.1 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities. The same year, the U.S. gave Russia $71.5 million in aid even though they hold over $168 billion in U.S. Treasury securities.

From 2008-2012, the United States provided roughly $3.225 billion in foreign aid to countries whose GDPs are over $1.5 trillion.

Below is a list of those countries that currently have a GDP over $1.5 trillion and the foreign aid they receive from the U.S.

*GDP of the country on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis, as determined by the most recent publication of the Central Intelligence Agency’s The World Factbook.

The following countries hold U.S. Treasury securities, receive foreign aid, and have had an annual budget surplus at least once since 2007: China, Russia, Brazil, and Mexico.
