On Tuesday, February 19th at approximately 6:45 pm, deputies were dispatched to 6100 Porterfield Drive regarding a burglary in progress. When deputies arrived they found the female resident running across the street and communicating with Central Dispatch via her cell phone.

The resident stated to deputies that she had been away and was returning home. When she arrived home, she talked to the neighbors and then entered her house from the garage. The resident stated that while she was in the kitchen, she heard a noise coming from her bedroom.

The resident stated as she approached her bedroom, she noticed the door partially closed which she said was unusual. When she entered the bedroom, a white male suspect came out of the closet and pushed her to the floor. The suspect then fled out the back door and north of her residence. The resident was not hurt during the encounter.

The deputies on scene cleared the resident’s home but could not locate the suspect. Deputy Bryan Bishop then deployed his K9 partner Bosko who tracked the suspect to the north of the residence. The track ended at Goebel Soccer Complex on Greenriver Road, where deputies believe the suspect fled in a waiting vehicle.

The deputies on scene did locate a broken window on the back side of the residence and processed the scene for evidence. The incident is still under investigation. Anyone who may have noticed anything in the area of the incident between 6:00 PM and 6:45 PM yesterday that was out of the ordinary or suspicious or saw anything at the Goebel Soccer Complex yesterday between 6:00 PM and 6:45 PM are encouraged to contact sheriff’s investigators at 421-6201.

Evansville residents will have a chance to review and offer comments on the city’s tentative 2013 road improvement and paving plan during the second in a series of public road meetings next week. The meeting will be Thursday, Feb. 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. at C.K. Newsome Community Center, 100 E. Walnut Street. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will open the meeting, and City Engineer Pat Keepes will give a PowerPoint Presentation followed by a question and answer session. The third scheduled public road meeting will be March 1 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1301 S. Green River Road.

The family of a man injured earlier this month in a home invasion has offered a $2,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible.

The incident occurred at Mission Viejo Apartments at approximately 1:30 AM on February 12th. Two white females knocked at the victim’s door asking for someone by name. When the victim, Rami Jawabreh, answered the door, he was repeatedly struck in the head with a handgun by a masked male who appeared from one side of the apartment door. A second male entered the apartment during the assault and pointed a handgun at Jawabreh’s female companion.

All four fled on foot following the brief assault and Jawabreh was taken by the female companion to the hospital for treatment. No reason for the assault has been determined and nothing was taken from the apartment.

The investigation to this point has provided substantial corroborating information. Sheriff Williams said, “Based on what we have now, this is an extremely disturbing case. There is no apparent motive for what was a vicious attack.”

February 19, 2013 – Evansville, IN – The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library welcomes award-winning children’s book author April Pulley Sayre to Central Library on Saturday, March 2. Sayre is the featured speaker at this year’s Young Authors Event, an annual event featuring the work of area young writers.

She will speak about her work at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm in the Browning Events Room. Her 1:00 presentation will contain information for teachers and educators. After each presentation, Sayre will sign copies of her books, which will be available for purchase from Barnes and Noble at the event, or attendees are welcome to bring their own.

The author of over 55 natural history books for children and adults, Sayre has followed lemurs in Madagascar, pursued army ants in Panama, and eaten piranha in the Peruvian Amazon. Her books include Here Come the Humpbacks!; Ant, Ant, Ant!; Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out!; and One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab.

In addition, several schools will be in attendance to showcase the work of their students from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in the lobby of Central Library. From 10:45 am to 1:00 pm in the READ children’s area, families are invited to enjoy special hands-on science activities and games and meet animals from Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden.

Admission to all parts of the event is free. This event is made possible by the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library Foundation and the Evansville Area Reading Council.

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Coordinated School Health Team is working to make it easier for EVSC schools to make healthy choices when doing fundraising. The team would like to create a resource guide of healthy alternatives for fundraisers made up of area organizations and businesses with items that could be used to raise money for schools.

The team is looking to gather a list of fundraising ideas that are easy to manage, yet have a reasonable profit capability. Ideal fundraisers will include non-food items such as flowers, plants, mulch, jewelry, etc. and those that include healthy food choices. According to the team, having healthy fundraisers demonstrates the group’s commitment to promoting healthy behaviors both in and out of the school environment. Fundraisers that involve physical activity also are encouraged.

INDIANAPOLIS – Attorney General Greg Zoeller teamed up with Feeding Indiana’s Hungry (FIsH) and the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) today to launch the fifth annual statewide March Against Hunger food drive competition.

Zoeller said there are 11 regional food banks in Indiana partnering with FIsH to help link resources to feed those in need. For the fifth consecutive year, the March Against Hunger food drive will challenge law firms to donate goods and raise money for these food banks.

“March Against Hunger is an opportunity to spread awareness about a growing problem and spotlight attorneys who go above and beyond to help their clients and their communities,” Zoeller said. “Hunger is preventable and that’s why we are calling on those in the law profession to lend their support.”

In 2012, 51 law firms participated in the March Against Hunger and donated more than 11,400 pounds of food and raised $51,822. Since 2009, food drive participants have donated more than 34,100 pounds of food and raised $127,167 total.

“As a fellow lawyer, I can’t say enough about Attorney General Zoeller’s commitment to serving Hoosiers in need,” said ISBA President Daniel B. Vinovich. “It is opportunities like this annual food drive that allow us to serve beyond our clients and I am so proud of the overwhelming contributions that pour in each year.”
