EPD PATCH 2012

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Lloyd Expressway and Burkhardt at 12:40 this morning for an injury accident.
Based on the initial investigation, police believe 12 year old Harry Rodriguez was riding riding a skateboard on the Lloyd in the eastbound lanes of traffic. Rodriguez was travelling west into oncoming traffic when he was struck by a car driven by 42 year old Floyd Brogden.
Brogden told police he did not see Rodriguez prior to the accident and was not sure what he had collided with until he stopped to check.
Rodriguez suffered multiple injuries. The extent of the injuries is not known and he is being treated at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Brogden was taken to a local hospital for a drug and alcohol test per state law. Based on their initial observations, police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

user29376-1376567592-media1_46454a_192_240_PrsMe_Early Thursday morning, August 15, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Trooper Paul Stolz was at the Gibson County Jail dropping off paperwork for an arrest he made earlier in his shift. Trooper Stolz noticed Dalton Helsley, 20, of Winslow, was pacing back and forth in the lobby and acting suspicious. Helsley was at the jail to bond out a friend that was arrested earlier for possession of paraphernalia and minor consumption of alcohol. Trooper Stolz confronted Helsley and noticed his eyes were dilated and his speech was slurred. When Trooper Stolz walked outside and looked into Helsley’s vehicle he spotted two partially burnt hand rolled roaches and rolling papers in plain view in the center console. Further investigation revealed the roaches contained synthetic marijuana. A plastic baggie containing plant like material consistent with synthetic marijuana was also found under the front passenger seat. Helsley was arrested and incarcerated in the Gibson County Jail where he is currently being held on a $750 cash bond.

Beneficial Effects of Coffee

Beneficial Effects of CoffeeDr. Arnold

By

Roy M. Arnold MD

Most of us enjoy a steaming cup of coffee first thing in the morning. Others enjoy coffee throughout the day. Over the last 30 years the pendulum on whether coffee is beneficial or harmful has swung back and forth so many times it would make you dizzy. When I began my medical career years ago, the prevailing dogma was that coffee consumption was a major contributor to stomach ulcers and that it increased the risk for pancreatic cancer. Both of the assumptions, taught to me as ironclad facts during the Carter administration have since been shown to be completely false.

Besides the pleasant aroma, taste and mild stimulating effects, are there in fact any beneficial effects of coffee? Moreover, have any scientific population studies shown any harmful effects of America’s favorite morning beverage? First, a few statistics: 54% of Americans over 18 or 150 million US residents drink coffee daily. 35% prefer it black and 65% consume their coffee during breakfast hours. 35% of the coffee consumed is in specialty drinks such as Cappuccinos, mochas or lattes. Per capita annual consumption in the US is almost 6 gallons. Surprisingly, the US is not even in the top 20 countries based on per capita consumption. The top 5 are Finland, Norway, Iceland, Denmark and the Netherlands. I presume it’s pretty cold in northern Europe. The US is ranked 26th on the list right behind Portugal, Kosovo, Estonia and Spain. Our neighbor to the north, Canada ranked 9th overall.

The latest good news on coffee is that regular coffee drinkers are 50% less likely to commit suicide. The data comes from a 16 year study of over 200,000 individuals in the US and was published in the World Journal of Biologic Psychiatry. Another large study from 2011 published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that female coffee drinkers were 20% less likely to suffer from depression.

In a 2012 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found coffee-drinking men to be 10% and women who drank the same amount 16% less likely to die from any cause than their non-coffee drinking peers. This study lasted 14 years and included 450,000 participants.

Studies cited in a Popular Science article from earlier this year entitled, “7 Reasons Why Coffee Is Good for You,” showed a 23-67% lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementia and a 32-60% lower risk of Parkinson’s disease. The article also cites a lower incidence of liver disease.

Coffee actually contains a significant amount of vitamins and antioxidants which can provide substantial benefit. The primary antioxidants in coffee are called flavonoids; however coffee contains significant amounts of at least ten other compounds including carotenoids like lutein and lycopene with recognized antioxidant properties. Antioxidants obtained by consuming fruits, vegetables and beverages contribute to the body’s self-repair mechanisms and may play a role in resisting cancer. Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that help protect your cells and repair cell damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals, molecules responsible for aging and tissue damage, may be a factor in heart disease, cancer and other disease. Foods loaded with antioxidants include blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, tomatoes, kale, bell peppers, corn, and spinach. The major antioxidant vitamins are Vitamin C, beta-carotene and Vitamin E. They’re largely found in colorful fruits and veggies, especially those that are red, blue, purple, yellow and orange in color. Despite all of the hype about Green tea containing high levels of antioxidants, coffee actually contains more on a per-cup measurement.

Other less scientific studies on coffee consumption have shown a reduction in gout symptoms, gallstones, post-exercise muscle pain and in reducing heavy metals dissolved in tap water. One study even suggested that coffee consumption reduces dental plaque and cavities.

Lest one think that this article is one-sided, there are a few effects of coffee consumption that can be adverse to your health. First the stimulant effect can interfere with sleep, particularly if consumed close to bedtime. Second, some studies have shown that the stimulant effect can contribute to rapid heartbeat in persons who are sensitive to its effects. In addition, some studies have found coffee consumption increases cholesterol and raises the risk of osteoporosis. Yet other studies did not validate these conclusions. Coffee consumption in pregnancy has been linked to an increased risk of stillbirth and a few studies have also identified a higher prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia in coffee drinkers.

In summary, if you enjoy your morning coffee, you may partake of it secure in the knowledge that it is probably not causing you any serious harm and may be improving your overall health and longevity. As with everything moderation is the key – 2-6 cups per day maximum. If you experience any heart palpitations or pounding, it’s probably worthwhile to cut back and consult with your primary health provider.

Dear Friends:

Coming to the capital city sometime soon?

Why not fit in a visit to the Indiana Statehouse while you are here?

Tours are available every weekday, except for holidays. Three types of tours can be scheduled during regular working hours. All are free of charge.

  • The Welcome Tour is a 15-minute orientation lecture held in the Statehouse Rotunda. After the lecture is over, guests can tour the building on their own. You will not have access to executive, legislative or judicial rooms or offices.
  • The Express Tour, lasting 30 to 45 minutes, gives an overview of the Statehouse and a guided view of the chambers of the Indiana House and Senate and the Indiana Supreme Court. These tours take place depending on the schedule of the group and the tour guide.
  • The Statehouse Tour is 90 minutes long and can be scheduled for as many as 120 people, including students and teachers. It combines building and state history, and the group will visit an office in each branch of government, depending on availability. This tour also includes visits to the House, Senate and Supreme Court, and elected officials may speak to a group if schedules permit.

The Statehouse Tour Office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for legal holidays. Tours are given from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On Saturdays, tours leave the Statehouse Rotunda at 10:15 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

The tour office is closed on Sundays.

Please remember that visitors to the Statehouse will have to go through security, including passing through metal detectors. All bags and packages will be x-rayed and inspected.

Handicapped individuals and scheduled tours will enter the building through the west doors on the lower level from Senate Avenue (the Robert D. Orr Plaza). This is a developing story.  We are waiting to receive an official  news release from the city concerning  this breaking story,  We shall post any messages sent to us by the city and or the police department public relations department soon as they send it to us.

CVB Board Splits Vote Along Political Appointment Lines to Approve $2 Million for Hotel Project

The Evansville Convention & Visitors Bureau’s board of commissioners voted 4 – 3 this morning to approve spending $2 million on the City of Evansville’s proposed Downtown convention hotel project. All four of the YES votes came from commissioners who were originally appointed by either former Mayor Weinzapfel or current Mayor Lloyd Winnecke.

Half of the $2 million, will go toward accessories such as a parking garage and sky bridges that would connect the hotel to adjacent buildings. The other $1 million would go toward improvements at The Centre, Evansville’s downtown convention facility.

The funds will be provided over 10 years, with $200,000 paid each year

The seven-member board approved the spending by a vote of 4-3. Donna Leader who was first appointed by Mayor Weinzapfel, Earl Milligan who was appointed by Mayor Winenecke, John Montrastelle who was appointed by the County Commissioners when now Mayor Winnecke was its president and Mike Roeder of Vectren who was first appointed by Mayor Weinzapfel voted in favor of the spending.

Mike Roeder’s day job is with Vectren who provides space for the Evansville Regional Business Committee that employs Evansville Redevelopment Commission President Ed Hafer who spoke out in favor of the hotel project at Monday’s meeting of the Evansville City Council.

Rita Bauer appointed by the County Council, Ward Shaw originally appointed by Mayor Weinzapfel, and Kevin Stahl appointed by the County Commissioners voted against the motion.

The money will come from the CVB’s tourism capital development fund, which the CVB can spend only on projects to promote local tourism. Fund money is generated by Vanderburgh County’s innkeepers tax — money that overnight guests pay when they stay at local hotels.

IS IT TRUE August 14, 2013 Part 2

IS IT TRUE August 14, 2013 Part 2

IS IT TRUE an unannounced meeting of the Salary Advisory Committee 10:00 am this morning in the Mayor’s office was called by the Mayor to discuss about 5 to 8 new positions within the Evansville Water and Sewer Department?… that one of the new position requests may  a $20,000 raise to new city Water and Sewer employee Mike Duckworth?…we shall keep you posted on the happenings of this non announced meeting?

IS IT TRUE the speakers from last night’s meeting at the library regarding the proposed downtown hotel were in near unanimous agreement that the empty lot where the Executive Inn was once is a great place for a hotel and parking garage?…there was even near unanimous approval that these things will help with conventions?…when the discussion moved to how the hotel and its accessories should be paid for the agreement ended?…there were the starry eyed dreamers who really seem to believe that just another $37.5 Million gift to land a hotel and parking lot will instantly transform downtown Evansville into a sparkling vibrant city and that this needs to be supported at all cost?…there were many such people in the room as they had been recruited by the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Winnecke, and others who have an agenda to move this project forward the way it is right now?…there were an equivalent number of people with a more realistic view of economics that ranged from free market people who think subsidies are just wrong to others who think some subsidy like a traditional tax abatement would be okay but handing out cash like Halloween candy is stupid and counter competitive?

IS IT TRUE that one attendee asked the attorney for the group of hoteliers why this hotel is not being undertaken by some local company?…the answer was for the record that they would if the project was capable of turning a profit as they have all proven by investing in hotels in the suburbs?…it was touched on last night and we do not think it has been touched on before that roughly $10 Million of the deal for the hotel alone are developer fees that will go straight into the pockets of the developer from the pockets of the people of Evansville?…the developer is free to sell the property after 5 years and keep ALL OF THE PROCEEDS?…it would not be the first time that such a stunt has been pulled?

IS IT TRUE that while the City of Evansville has been busily laying the groundwork to follow the mistakes of many other Midwestern cities by betting the last of the discretionary money on hotels, dog parks, and other assorted brick and mortar temples to fun and games the Obama Administration has been running up more white flags of surrender in the implementation of ObamaCare?…first came the delay of ObamaCare’s Medicare cuts until after the election?… then there was the delay of the law’s employer mandate?… then there was the announcement, buried in the Federal Register, that the administration would delay enforcement of a number of key eligibility requirements for the law’s health insurance subsidies, relying on the “honor system” instead?… now comes word that another costly provision of the health law—its caps on out-of-pocket insurance costs—will be delayed for one more year?…according to the Congressional Research Service, as of November 2011, the Obama administration had missed as many as one-third of the deadlines, specified by law, under the Affordable Care Act?…it seems as though there is not a governing body left in this country that can actually put together a cogent plan for anything at all and follow it up with even a half assed implementation?…ObamaCare is the proof that the Evansville City Council needs to VET the hotel proposal completely and take as long as it takes to come up with a contract that is acceptable to the people of Evansville?…it will be interesting to see if 5 members of the City Council will have the courage to step forth and insist that this is VETTED as it should be prior to humoring Mayor Winnecke with a vote?

Back to School Safety

Sheriff LogoMany Vanderburgh County students have already returned to school and the rest will begin tomorrow. That means a large number of buses on the roads, children getting on and off the buses, new bus stop locations, new bus routes, congestion in and around the schools, new student drivers and many other factors to be aware of as our kids return to the classrooms.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office will be stepping up our presence and enforcement around the schools and on bus routes to help make sure this school year is safe for everyone. The Sheriff’s Office will significantly increase patrols and personnel near all of the schools in Vanderburgh County located outside of the corporate city limits of Evansville for several days. Deputy Sheriffs will be watching for any and all types of unsafe driving behavior. We hope that our presence will serve as a reminder and a deterrent, but it will also put us in a position to respond immediately to any situations that arise at or near these schools. Deputies will also be monitoring various bus routes for safety issues, especially school bus stop arm violations.

At many locations, Sheriff’s Deputies will be assisting school personnel with traffic direction in and out of the school parking lots and drop off zones.

The Vanderburgh County Highway Department has placed large school zone warning signs near all of these schools to help warn drivers.

Tips for back to school safety:

• If bus service is available, please utilize it.
• While we know for many, this year may bring the first day of school for your child, please take pictures before you get to the school. Please do not park in the drop-off zones of any of the schools to take your child into class.
• Utilize the proper restraint systems in your vehicle.
• Keep your speed to a minimum and pay extra attention in an around school zones and near school bus loading areas.
• Know when a school bus stops and its red stop sign or flashing lights appear children are boarding or exiting the bus. Be on the lookout for children crossing the street even after the bus has moved on.
• Please, no cell phone use in the school zones while operating a vehicle and no texting at any time while operating a vehicle.
• Encourage children getting on and off school buses to be very mindful of surrounding traffic, because the traffic may not be watching for them.
• Give yourself plenty of time. Do not let the frustration of running late compromise the good driving decisions you make.
• Please call 911 to report dangerous driving situations.

The men and women of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office wish everyone a safe and successful school year.
