FOP Children’s Christmas Party

0

EPD PATCH 2012Each year the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge # 73 with assistance from the EVSC, selects a number of children who could benefit from a personalized Christmas Party. Approximately 80 -100 children are picked up by bus and transported to the FOP Pal Camp located at 5417 North Happe Road.

Upon arrival, the children are warmly welcomed by police officers, entertained by clowns and fed as they anxiously await the arrival of the star of the party, Santa Claus.

Each child gets a photo with the jolly old elf and then they receive a gift specially selected for them by their age and gender. After many smiles, hugs and a few tears, they are ushered back to their bus and taken back to town.

This year’s event at the FOP Camp will take place on Saturday, December 14th, from 9:30 am until Noon.

IS IT TRUE December 13, 2013

IS IT TRUE December 13, 2013

IS IT TRUE that several members of the Mole Nation have advised the City County Observer that Mayor Winnecke has commissioned a polling center to determine whether or not the people of Evansville have an appetite to see their tax money spent on Roberts Park?…it is important to note that every one of the Moles that have told us about this poll have been Republicans during the recent past and would be more probably to support Mayor Winnecke than randomly chosen participants?…there is a sure fire way to produce a poll that has the kind of results one wants and that is to do a poll of your supporters and cronies?…we would not be one bit surprised to see a press release from the Mayor’s office in the near future touting a poll that concludes that the public wants Roberts Park and is willing to pay for it?…the only real poll worth listening to in these sort of matters is at the ballot box?…since Roberts Park is roughly a $10 Million project it should be placed on the ballot next November along with Centennial Park and the Mesker Amphitheatre with not to exceed budget numbers disclosed?…if a referendum at the ballot box results in approval then the Mayor can go ahead with his fun and games projects?

IS IT TRUE an ad hoc contest broke out on the CCO comment section yesterday for a slogan for Roberts Park since the Mayor has said much more about the park during his administration than he has about the IU Medical School?…this ad hoc contest was in the spirit of Andrew Smith’s slogan “Sewers before Stadium” and there were several very clever entries?…among the best were “Dogs before Docs”, “Mutts before Meds”, and “Canines before Campus”?…the one that takes the award was actually an entry from DrChaos that was modified slightly by the CCO editor?…that one would be “Bitches before Stitches” which pretty much sums up local governments obsession with fun and games over substance during the last 10 years?

IS IT TRUE in a bit of good news yesterday it was announced that Evansville will once again host the NCAA Division II national basketball championship?…the last time the “little dance” came to town was 2002 when the tournament was held at Roberts Stadium?…with the local flavor of having Owensboro’s Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers progress to the final game Roberts drew respectable crowds of about 2,500 spectators per game?…it will be interesting to see if the same tournament at the Ford Center will equal or exceed the 2002 crowds at Roberts?…this tournament was started in Evansville and hosted at Roberts for many years back when the University of Evansville, Kentucky Wesleyan, and Southern Illinois were all competitive nationally?…to this day two of the top five crowds for a Division II title game were played in Roberts Stadium with each drawing over 11,000 fans?

IS IT TRUE the editor of the CCO got a call from Evansville Tuesday asking about how Angel Investing and Venture Capital works in California?…of course the answer is quite well but we could always use more as start-up companies are always in need of cash?…the companies of the Coachella Valley Innovation Hub have indeed attracted over a million bucks in outside investment during 2013 and one has gone public with a current valuation of $46 Million?…the caller became frustrated at hearing that and expressed disappointment that the campaign promises of 2011 by Mayor Winnecke to put together an Angel Investing group and utilize the Tech Transfer agreement between GAGE and Crane that was signed in 2008?…that across the country cash investment is the lifeblood of entrepreneurship and without it home grown entrepreneurs with either move to where the money is or will set their ambitions aside and assimilate into the hourly work crowd?…in the spirit of Samuel L. Jackson’s credit card commercial we ask those of you of means “WHAT START UP HAVE YOU INVESTED IN THIS YEAR?”…if as we expect the answer is ZERO, that explains much about the difference in outcomes when it comes to the creation of wealth and jobs through local efforts?

Dr. Bucshon on Bipartisan Budget Agreement

“While this deal is far from perfect, it is a small step in the right direction to pay down our debt and balance our nation’s budget.”

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement regarding the budget agreement reached late Tuesday night by House and Senate leaders.

“Chairman Paul Ryan, the architect of the fiscally responsible Republican House budgets, has negotiated the best agreement possible with President Obama in the White House and the United States Senate controlled by Democrats.

“The agreement achieves discretionary spending levels below what was passed in previous House budgets and includes over $20 billion in long-term deficit reduction with zero tax increases. The unmanageable across-the-board spending cuts to our national defense are partially mitigated and more than offset by changes to mandatory spending programs, which are the true long-term drivers of our debt and deficits.  These changes are permanent, resulting in ongoing savings for decades.

“We also avoid the risk of government shutdowns going forward by making these smarter cuts and reforms, jumpstarting the regular order appropriations process and reclaiming Congress’ power of the purse.

“The Hoosiers I represent expect Congress to find common ground and move this country forward. This budget agreement makes divided government work, while maintaining the core principles in which I believe.  I will continue to fight for more aggressive fiscal restraints to rid our country of the burden which is our debt and deficits.

“While this deal is far from perfect, it is a small step in the right direction to pay down our debt and balance our nation’s budget. However, I am disappointed that Democrats still refuse to acknowledge the need for broader entitlement reform to solve our long-term fiscal problems. At the end of the day, I firmly believe a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution is required to force Washington, D.C. to live within its means.”

Bucshon, a physician from Southern Indiana, represents the 8th District of Indiana, which includes all or parts of Clay, Daviess, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Owen, Parke, Pike, Posey, Sullivan, Vanderburgh, Vermillion, Vigo, Warrick, Crawford, Dubois, Perry, and Spencer counties.

Indiana State Police warn about scammers threatening arrests

0

ISPThe message on voicemail said a warrant would be issued for his arrest if he did not call back immediately. Unfortunately the caller, who claimed he was a deputy from the Indiana State Police warrant division, didn’t realize that the person he called back was an actual detective with the Indiana State Police.

It seems as quickly as you hear about one scam it disappears and another one starts. The latest scam that is circulating involves an individual claiming to be from a law enforcement agency. The scammer typically threatens to arrest the victim if they don’t pay the fines for some fabricated crime or debt. To make matters worse the crooks often have some personal information about the victim, which make them seem more legitimate.

Recently the state police have received complaints about this scam. A state police detective investigating the complaint turned the tables on the scammer and called him. The man claiming to work for the Indiana State Police didn’t answer so the detective left a message and the man called back. The scammer proceeded to tell the detective that he had a warrant for his arrest. He explained that in order to take care of it and avoid being arrested at work the detective would need to buy two green dot money packs for $1,000 and then call him back with the account number. The conversation that lasted more than 30 minutes eventually ended after the scammer was fully convinced that he was talking to the police.

The investigation in this case is ongoing but more than likely it will turn into a dead end, commented Sergeant Trent Smith. In this scam case as with most of them the calls are originating from cell phones all over the US and tracking down the 21st century con artist is no easy task. The state police feel that a well informed public is the best defense in combating scammers and remind everyone that an influx in this type of crime is often seen during the holiday season.

PET OF THE WEEK

Daisy

Daisy is a 2-year-old cat who has been at the VHS longer than ANY of our other cats. (She arrived here in FEBRUARY!) Daisy lives in the cageless cat room (so she gets along with other cats!) and since she’s so relaxed and used to it, she can often be found lounging around quietly when visitors come. She’s been here so long that she shouldn’t have to wear a paper collar with her name anymore, so hers is pink and patterned. All of these things, plus her classic tabby color, means that she is OVERLOOKED five days a week by visitors! She deserves so much better than to spend the holidays in the shelter. Her $30 adoption fee includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and a bag of food. Daisy is also one of our 12 Pets of Christmas, so you get an extra bag of goodies with her adoption! She is a wonderful, healthy cat who cannot help her circumstances. By seeking her out in the Cat Lounge or asking our staff for her, you will be saving her life. If you’re even considering it, hoping someone else will come get her – they haven’t. She’s waiting for YOU! 812-426-2563, Tuesday through Saturday 12-6 pm.
