Turn in expired or unwanted meds Saturday

National Drug Take Back Day drop-off sites available at no costGreg Zoeller

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana consumers can dispose of expired or unwanted medications Saturday during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller partnered with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to remind Hoosiers to drop off any unwanted medications at one of more than 80 collection sites. All sites will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and consumers can find a location nearest them by visiting www.dea.gov or by calling 1.800.882.9539.

“This one-day event allows you to anonymously drop off your expired or unwanted medication at no cost,” Zoeller said. “There are many advantages to participating in drug-take back day, but perhaps most important, is the opportunity to significantly reduce the chances of someone else misusing or abusing those drugs.”

Expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications and over the counter solid dosage medications such as tablets and capsules will be accepted. Intravenous solutions, needles and illicit substances like marijuana or methamphetamines will not be accepted.

“During the past take-back initiative, Indiana residents turned in 11 tons of medication at 85 locations and we hope to surpass that number this time,” said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Dennis Wichern, who oversees DEA operations in Indiana. “We are urging residents to clear out expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs in the home so that they will be properly disposed of and not be potentially diverted to illicit use and abuse.”

Zoeller provided four tips Hoosiers should consider when storing or disposing of unwanted medications:

· Do not keep medications past their expiration date or intended period of use. Young children or pets might ingest medication if they find it which can lead to accidental poisoning. Avoid an accident by keeping unused medications out of your house;
· Avoid throwing medications away in the trash. As the epidemic of prescription drug abuse grows, theft becomes more common. This includes identity theft from the personal information on prescription bottles. Dealers and addicts will even go through your trash;
· Do not flush medications or pour them down the sink. Flushing your unused medication or pouring it down the drain contaminates Indiana’s waterways. This can have devastating results on the fish and aquatic wildlife of these ecosystems; and
· Never give or sell your prescribed medication to others as it is not only misuse, it is illegal. Legally prescribed medication is not permitted to be shared or transferred to others, because many of these drugs have harmful side effects and their use can lead to addiction. Misuse and abuse come with significant risks — including death.

The Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force is focused on ending the prescription drug abuse epidemic including finding ways to increase availability of disposal sites for unused controlled substances.

Last year, Zoeller and the task force launched a new website, www.BitterPill.IN.gov, and a statewide public awareness campaign which includes radio and TV commercials about prescription drug abuse. The website serves as a one-stop-shop for consumers to find information about the epidemic and how to get help.

Arlington National Cemetery: 150 Years of Service

Tyrades! By Danny Tyree

In the 40-plus years since my paternal grandparents passed away, I have often wondered about the status of Shiloh Cemetery, which was nestled on the hilltop above their humble farmhouse.

Dave Granlund / PoliticalCartoons.com
Recently, my hometown newspaper, the Marshall County (TN) Tribune, brought me up to date. Decades of neglect, weather and wandering cattle have left Shiloh Cemetery (not to be confused with the graveyard at Shiloh National Military Park) in a shambles, with broken headstones and no way to identify most of the approximately 70 people buried there.

The sad fate of Shiloh Cemetery (final resting place of civilians, Confederate veterans and one Revolutionary War veteran) makes it all the more meaningful that we have a well-maintained treasure such as Arlington National Cemetery, which celebrates its 150th anniversary with special events in May and June.

Ideally, one would have the time, money and health to visit the historic site this year, and see the “eternal flame” at the grave of President Kennedy or the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. (Read more online at www.ArlingtonCemetery.mil.) Failing that, there are other ways to mark the sesquicentennial — and not just the perennials of “thank a veteran, write to active military personnel and exercise your hard-won right to vote.”

Perhaps late spring 2014 is a good time to tone down the over-the-top rhetoric. It cheapens the sacrifices of our war casualties and deceased veterans when every social trend you dislike is a “war on fill-in-the-blank,” and when every policymaker you disagree with is a “Hitler.”

Signs scattered around Arlington request “Silence and Respect.” Would it be asking too much that we turn down the volume on our teeth-rattling car stereos, refrain from gratuitous public profanity, “measure twice and cut once” before speaking ill of another person and carve out five minutes a day for noise-free, self-respecting contemplation?

As we contemplate Arlington and death (the Great Equalizer), we should try to ditch our prejudices, stereotypes and hang-ups. American military teamwork should make us realize that life is too short to spend it envying the rich or exploiting the poor, dismissing all Yankees as know-it-alls or regarding all southerners as illiterate racists, etc.

The military personnel buried at Arlington had to learn discipline in maneuvers and maintenance of their equipment. Perhaps we could reboot our New Year’s resolutions and discipline ourselves to wear a seatbelt, use our vehicle turn signal, floss daily, push back from the table, walk the extra steps to the recycling bin, elect leaders who keep us prepared for war (but eager for peace) or otherwise help ourselves and our great nation.

Certainly Shiloh is not the only cemetery suffering from families that die out or move away and younger generations that have different priorities. Ask some questions and track down abandoned or neglected graveyards in your own neck of the woods that cry out for cash, elbow grease and genealogical expertise.

Some may view respect for the dead as yesterday’s news or throwing good money after bad and ask, “What’s in it for me?”

Respect for those at Arlington and elsewhere serves the past, present and future. We can learn from the past, gain a feeling of accomplishment in the present (“I’m tired, but it’s a GOOD tired”) and set a positive example for the young not to treat us as disposable when we’re no longer “productive.”

Dedication of the Jon Siau Art Gallery

The dedication of the Jon Michael Siau Art Gallery at North High School is planned for Saturday, April 26, at 4 pm. The public is invited to this event that identifies the enrichment to the lives of students at North High School by Jon Siau, long-time art teacher and coach. It also recognizes the monetary donations made to name this gallery in his honor.
Siau dedicated his time and talents to his students, athletes, and fellow artists during his decades at North High School. Now that he has retired, his friends and supporters have honored him by raising funds to name the art gallery at the new North High School the “Jon Michael Siau Art Gallery.”
In honor of his 42 years of service to North High School, and the countless number of students influenced and encouraged in their artistic and athletic abilities, the EVSC Office of Development has completed a campaign to raise money for the gallery.
Donations of many friends, current and former students and families, and co-workers will fund primarily to the Visual Arts Program at North High School, signage for the gallery and at Siau’s request, a modest amount will be allocated for Harper Elementary School – where Siau attended elementary school; a scholarship for his alma mater, Harrison High School, and funding for a district-wide process to ensure all students reach their full potential.
Co-Chairs of the campaign, former North High School Principal Brenda Weber, Siau’s Elementary School Principal Mattie Miller, and former classmate and friend Becky Dumes, say Siau’s fingerprint is evident throughout our community and its people. “Jon was born, raised, educated, worked and has lived in Evansville his entire life. His love of Evansville is reflected in all of his accomplishments and how he has “given back” to Evansville in every aspect of his life,” Dumes said, when the campaign was kicked off.
“It is now time to recognize Jon for all of his efforts in offering the EVSC community-especially his students- his personal best. He has –and continues to be- an educator, friend, coach, mentor, artist, citizen, motivator and Life Coach to the citizens of Evansville, no matter the age or the situation. He always has a kind, encouraging word for all and focuses on moving forward and not looking back.
I don’t think many people realize the time and efforts he has brought to his students in making them a priority. He has personally delivered artwork to out-of-area locations so his students’ projects could be delivered safe and sound for judging. If a financial situation might have prevented students from participating in an important Art or sporting event, Jon made sure those students had the same opportunities as everyone else. Jon’s continued acts of devotion and generosity to his students, family, and friends cannot be matched.”
Siau taught visual arts for over 40 years at North High School. He also was a track and golf coach at North, encouraging his students to strive to be the best at whatever their endeavor.

Michelle K. Vezina Peterlin
Artist’s Statement

I was a student under John Grillo during my college years at the University of Massachusetts. Mr. Grillo is considered the Father of American Expressionism.

I consider myself an expressionist artist. When I get an idea for a composition, I am at first interested in the pattern of colors, lines and how it relates to the other parts in the composition. I am attracted first to color. Once I have worked out what the piece will look like, I will manipulate it to provoke mood and emotion.

I work primarily in acrylic because it has intense color pigmentation and dries quickly allowing for a lot of glazing. I start my painting by drawing out the composition in pen then covering the canvas in a dark color, usually raw umber. Next, I build up the color, layer upon layer, until I get the intensity I am looking for.

I have been a professional artist for over 20 years.

I am fortunate to be able to travel. When I am in a new place, I love to look for its quiet, moody corners. I am attracted to glass, store fronts and windows with a view.

My work chronicles places I have been and painted. They are from all over the world and the United States. Some pieces are purely composites of objects that interest me. Some are mementos of a place or an event I loved and wanted to remember.

I paint on a large scale because I want to viewer to feel immersed in the piece. I want them to feel the mood in the composition and glimpse at places that are ordinary but special in everyday life.

I hope this exhibit will take the viewer on a journey where they write their own story about what they see.

UNGETHIEM GETS CORE ENDORSEMENT

NEWS RELEASE April 25, 2014

It is with great pleasure that Citizens Opposed To Reorganization in Evansville endorsements Bruce Ungethiem bid to become the next County Commissioner for Vanderburgh County.

Bruce has demonstrated his natural leadership ability to all of those who have worked with him on community issues, professionally in his many years as an engineer on projects and developing manufacturing locations all over the world, and in his civic endeavors working with youth sports and community issues.

We agree with his philosophy that local government should be transparent, respectful of its citizens time and taxes, and professional in executing both public projects and daily business.

His successful effort as Co-Chair of CORE in defeating the consolidation referendum demonstrates his ability to successfully engage the community to action in large scale civic issues.

Due to his anticipated filing as a candidate for Vanderburgh County Commissioner, Bruce resigned his position as Co-Chairman of CORE2012 effective January 1, 2014.  Bruce has also received endorsements from the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP)  and the Vanderburgh County Farm Bureau.

The many members of CORE , both city and rural residents, encourage all voters to make their vote count in the May 6th Republican primary and vote for Bruce Ungethiem as our new Vanderburgh County Commissioner.

IS IT TRUE April 25, 2014

Mole #??
Mole #??

IS IT TRUE that the City of Evansville has laid the only chips it has left on the table to try to retain the LST as a tourist attraction?…after spending more than a million bucks on a dock that sits in Kentucky waters for the LST the old real estate adage of “location, location, location” finally seems to have sunk in?…with all of the realtors and marketing types who hold elected office in Evansville one would have thought that the basics of real estate would be something they knew before dumping a million bucks into a location that has been challenged for success because of access and visibility issues?…what the City has offered the LST is first right of refusal to take over the Tropicana dock IF and it is a great big IF the State of Indiana ever approves gambling on land?…supposing that this happens, Tropicana would also have to build a new land based casino before any dock would be available for the LST?…even then there is the question of whether the scoop taken out of the river bank so the casino boat can actually float in Indiana will be adequate to moor and dock the LST?…strategic thinkers would bet that another million or so dollars would be needed to even get the current boat location ready for the LST?…this was a derivative of an offer is ever there was one with three conditions, none of which the City of Evansville has any control over as requirements before a move can take place?…then there is that 4th requirement known as the Army Corps of Engineers that exercises very tight control over the Ohio River?…it does not seem as though this IF-IF-IF-IF offer should have much value and even less probability of happening on any kind of timeline?

IS IT TRUE several Civic Center Moles tell us that the development agreement between the City of Evansville and HCW to build a downtown convention hotel may not have lapsed even though the drop dead date on the document is March 31, 2014?…it seems as though that date only mattered if the lot was confirmed to be “shovel ready” and all environmental mitigation had been completed?…the lot due to some “mooring” problems has not yet been established as ready for construction?…it will really look silly if after the attempts of the Mayor’s office to tar and feather Dunn Hospitality should the lot still not be “shovel ready” by the time that Hilton finishes their market study in several weeks?…we wonder who the finger of blame will be pointed at for the next delay?…this may also explain why HCW was slow to apply for a franchise?…not applying for a franchise to build on a lot that is not yet approved for construction is smart business?…lying about having applied to Evansville Living Magazine in December was not smart business?

IT IT TRUE the AT&T call center has announced that it will be adding 40 employees?…this news comes a week after the announced closing of the company formerly known as Creative Press that will put nearly 60 people out of work?…we are glad to hear about the 40 jobs at AT&T and hope they are quickly filled, but are concerned that this cycle of trading manufacturing jobs for call center jobs is not a good model to expand the tax base and increase the wealth of Evansville?…as Evansville sees itself as a “manufacturing” town there needs to be a blue ribbon committee to honestly address the reasons that manufacturing companies have left in droves for 50 years?…one accounting of the exit of manufacturing jobs from the City of Evansville came up with a number that is over 40,000 in this 50 year period?…we do know that Whirlpool peaked at over 10,000 local jobs in the early 1980’s and have since gone to ZERO so there is a start that accounts for 25% of the alleged losses?…we would appreciate further accounting of manufacturing jobs lost by Evansville in the last half century?…we also appreciate any information on why manufacturing has taken such a hit in this town while plants are still springing up in other locations?

IS IT TRUE it is getting annoying that the Indiana State Board of Accounts has not yet posted the 2012 City of Evansville Audit on there website?…the exit conference was held well over a month ago?…the people of this town deserve to know what the results of that audit are and in particular we deserve to know if our accounts are reconciled before our City Council goes out and borrows $77 Million dollars to be given away as incentives?…how an underwriter could approve a bond issue without a clean audit for nearly 3 years is puzzling?…that may be why an interest rate of 7% is being set as the upper limit by the resolution to approve the bonds?…paying 7% in a 4% market implies that the City of Evansville is at least expecting to have to pay this to sell the bonds?…both of these projects can wait until the audit is completed so we can see if we can get a better interest rate IF and we do mean IF the accounts are finally reconciled and the MIPS software is doing what it is supposed to do?
