Governor issues statement, calling the attack “senseless act of terror”

Indianapolis – In accordance with a presidential proclamation issued this afternoon, Governor Mike Pence directs flags be flown at half-staff at state facilities statewide to honor the victims of Sunday’s terror attack in Orlando. Flags should be flown at half-staff beginning immediately until sunset on Thursday, June 16. Governor Mike Pence also issued the following statement:

“Karen and I are shocked and saddened by the senseless act of terror committed in Orlando this morning,” said Governor Pence. “On behalf of the state of Indiana, we extend our prayers to the victims, their families, and the Orlando community. Today’s horrifying news stands as a grave reminder that we live in dangerous times and the war on terror continues.  For this reason we must commit to ensuring the safety and security of our people.”

Governor Pence has also asked the Indiana State Police to offer any assistance to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), particularly during a vigil tonight at the Old National Center in Indianapolis to honor the shooting victims in Orlando.

Today’s flag directive overlaps a previous directive from the Governor, which directed that flags be lowered to half-staff for the passing of Hoosier West Point Cadet Mitchell Alexander Winey. Cadet Winey was one of nine soldiers killed when their truck overturned in a flooded area in Ft. Hood. He was in Fort Hood for Cadet Troop Leader Training. Flags for Cadet Winey should remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of his funeral, Saturday, June 18.

JFK Visits Evansville

3

On Wednesday, October 5, 1960, a crowd at the Evansville airport was drenched while waiting for a special airplane to arrive. It was an hour behind schedule, but when Senator John F. Kennedy finally stepped off the plane about 3 p.m., the rain suddenly stopped. A few minutes later, the charismatic Democratic candidate for president greeted a welcoming crowd of an estimated 12,000 admiring adults and squealing teenagers on the steps of the Old Courthouse. Kennedy’s appearance came only days after a visit to the city by Vice-President Richard M. Nixon, who was also vying for the presidency. It would be a close election in November.

Stella is a 4-year-old female potbellied pig! She weighs approximately 150 lbs. She is not yet housetrained or leash-trained, but pigs are very intelligent and social animals. They also love to eat, so training them is usually not difficult! Stella is already spayed & vaccinated so her adoption fee is $250. She must be adopted outside Evansville city limits. Call (812) 426-2563 or visit www.vhslifesaver.org for adoption details!

Deadline Approaching for College Help

Dear Friend,

Do you know of a student looking for ways to help pay for college? The Indiana 21st Century Scholars program, which was recently renamed in honor of former governor Evan Bayh, was established to help students from low-income families achieve their goal of going to college.

Hoosier students can enroll in the program as early as seventh grade, but no later than June 30 of their eighth-grade year. To sign up for the program and learn about the eligibility requirements, click here.

Those who qualify and are granted the scholarship are eligible to receive up to four years of undergraduate tuition at any participating public college or university in Indiana. If a student plans on attending a private college, the state would still award an amount comparable to that of a four-year public college.

Students who are in the program not only receive a scholarship, but also are provided with the tools needed to assist with college applications, the admission process, financial aid and campus visits. The 21st Century Scholarship program has helped more than 70,000 low-income Hoosier students pay for college, many of these students were the first in their families to receive higher education. This scholarship is a great way for students in our community to achieve educational success, and develop the character traits and work ethic that will carry them into adulthood.

Please remember that the deadline for students entering the eighth grade to apply is quickly approaching. For more information about the program, call 1-888-528-4719, email info@che.in.gov or visit www.scholars.in.gov.

Sincerely,

State Rep. Wendy McNamara
