OTTERS WIN IN EXTRA INNINGS

0

Evansville emerged victorious in an extra inning nail biter by a score of 2-1 against the Lake Erie Crushers on Wednesday night at Bosse Field. Lake Erie jumped out to an early lead thanks to a solo homerun in the second inning. Josh Allen would bring the game to a tie following a solo shot of his own that was clobbered just to the right of the left-field foul pole. After the homer Evansville starting right-hander, Luc Rennie, cruised through the next 4.1 innings. Rennie finished the solid outing with 5 strikeouts, while only surrendering 6 hits throughout the contest. Showcasing a remarkable relief pitching performance, neither team mustered a single hit through the standard nine inning frames, with the score remaining at 1-1. When the eleventh inning came rolling around, an international tie breaker rule took precedence that brought each team an opportunity to begin the inning with a runner at second base. Once the Crushers failed to score in the top half of the frame, the Otters pounced on the opportunity for victory. Rolando Gomez opened the 11th with a bunt single to put runners at the corners, with zero outs. Succeeding an intentional walk to load the bases, Chris Breen was drilled by a pitch to bring home the winning run and seal an Otter win in the books.

Looking ahead, Evansville looks to win the rubber match of a three game series tomorrow versus the Lake Erie Crushers, with first pitch slated for 6:35 pm CDT. Tickets available at www.evansvilleotters.com or by phone at 812-435-8686 ext. 21.

Editorial: Suzanne Crouch Should Consider Filing As A Republican Nominee For Governor

3

On July 26, 2016 22 GOP Party leaders will hold caucus to select a replacement for Governor Mike Pence.  This committee have the rare opportunity to elect an extremely popular and qualified individual to fill the vacancy of former Governor Mike Pence who opt to run for Vice President of United States.  It is our opinion the person they should consider to fill that position is none other than State Auditor Susan Crouch from Vanderburgh County.

Its important to point out that Susan Crouch hasn’t officially applied to be a candidate for the vacant position as the Republican nominee for the Governor of Indiana.   However we hear that many people throughout the State are encouraging her to do so.   Whomever is selected as the Republican nominee for Governor must be a person whom has built many meaningful political relationships throughout our great state over the years.  It’s our opinion that Susan Crouch has done that. That being said, we recommend that it’s time for Susan Crouch to seriously consider throwing her hat in the ring as candidate for the Governor of Indiana.

Suzanne’s Crouch is an extremely principled person with a strong sense of personal responsibility. Throughout her political career she has helped the less fortunate.  She is very personable and trustworthily.

Susan Crouch graduated from Purdue University with honors. She worked in the private sector as a realtor, stockbroker and small business owner.

In 1994, she ran for Vanderburgh County Auditor, serving two terms (1995-2002).  In 2002, she was elected as a Vanderburgh County Commissioner, where she served for two and a half years (2003-2005) including President of the Commission.  Susan won both political position by an overwhelming popular vote.

In 2005, she was elected, in political caucus, to fill a vacancy as State Representative on the first ballot, defeating five other candidates. She served in the House of Representatives for eight years (2005-2013). During this time, she served as Vice-Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee and on the Public Health Committee.

In January 2014, she was appointed by  Governor Mike Pence to serve as Indiana’s 56th Auditor.  on November 2014, she was elected to a full-term, leading the ticket among other statewide candidates.  As Indiana’s Chief Financial Officer, Suzanne is responsible for accounting for the funds of the state’s $31 billion biennial budget, for paying the state’s bills and employees and making tax distributions to local government. Last year, she traveled to all 92 counties building partnerships with local government.

In 2012, Suzanne received the “Public Policy Award” from the Arc of Indiana for her work with people with disabilities. In 2014 Suzanne received the “Legislator of the Year Award” from the Indiana Association of Rehabilitative Services for her advocacy for people with disabilities. Also in 2015 she received the Arc of Indiana’s “Executive Director’s Award”.  In 2015 she was awarded the City County Observer “Community Achievement Award”.

In closing we hope Suzanne Crouch decides to throw her hat in the ring and run for Governor.  If not,  she shall still remain a positive and influential force in Indiana politics!  We wish her well either way!

Governor’s Association Donates $500,000 To John Gregg’s Campaign

by Britney Taylor

The Governor’s race in Indiana is heating up. Democrats are trying to capitalize on Governor Pence dropping out of the race here in Indiana. The Democratic Governor’s Association donated $500,000 out to John Gregg’s campaign.

Several GOP contenders are vying to replace Pence on the ballot, but a candidate will not be selected until July 26th when the 22-member Republican Party Committee meets behind closed doors.

Whoever is selected could be at an organizational and fundraising disadvantage with Pence’s key campaign operatives joining the vice presidential campaign.

Jasper Community Comes Together With Hope Garden
by Britney Taylor

The Jasper community is coming together to help others eat healthy with the help of its “Hope Garden”.
This garden, an initiative from Memorial Hospital, helps feeding programs and area schools in several counties in the tri-state.

The goal is to not just “treat” the community it serves as a hospital, but to be “preventative”. Board members say, that’s what the healthy foods from the garden help them do.

Faith Community Nurse Lanet Owen says, “And we’re always looking at how can we address the community with prevention and wellness and we know we need to start from the ground level up.”

As of now, the Jasper garden is only two acres. But board members say they hope to expand and grow inside as well.

A TASTE OF GERMANY IN JASPER
BY BRITNEY TAYLOR

Locals refer to it as “the Schnitz”, what started as a tavern in town is now one of the most recognizable restaurants in Jasper.
The Schnitzelbank offers a piece of old world Germany right in southern Indiana.

The Hanselman family has owned “the Schnitz” for 55 years and have transformed their business over the decades.

Jasper’s rich German heritage is one of the reasons the owner’s say the business has thrived.

Today the company brews its own beer and has an incredibly successful catering platform.

Alan Hanselman now runs the business his father started years ago with recipes, that like many in jasper, came from Germany.

Hanselman says, “What he did is he went to a lot of the local families around here and asked if any of them had any recipes that came over with their family’s from Germany and those are the ones we still use today, we haven’t dickered with them or anything like that and our Goulash, our Sauerbraten, and all of them, the Weiner Schnitzel they’re all family recipes that were here in Jasper.”

With all the traditional German Fare at “The Schnitz” surprisingly, the salad bar is the top selling item.

U.S. EPA And Enbridge Energy Reach $177 Million Settlement after 2010 Oil Spills in Michigan and Illinois

0

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice today announced a settlement with Enbridge Energy Limited Partnership and several related Enbridge companies to resolve claims stemming from its 2010 oil spills in Marshall, Mich. and Romeoville, Ill. Enbridge has agreed to spend at least $110 million on a series of measures to prevent spills and improve operations across nearly 2,000 miles of its pipeline system in the Great Lakes region. Enbridge will also pay civil penalties totaling $62 million for Clean Water Act violations — $61 million for discharging at least 20,082 barrels of oil in Marshall and $1 million for discharging at least 6,427 barrels of oil in Romeoville.

In addition, the proposed settlement will resolve Enbridge’s liability under the Oil Pollution Act, based on Enbridge’s commitment to pay over $5.4 million in unreimbursed costs incurred by the government in connection with cleanup of the Marshall spill, as well as all future removal costs incurred by the government in connection with that spill. Today’s settlement includes an extensive set of specific requirements to prevent spills and enhance leak detection capabilities throughout Enbridge’s Lakehead pipeline system – a network of 14 pipelines spanning nearly 2,000 miles across seven states. Enbridge must also take major actions to improve its spill preparedness and emergency response programs. Under the settlement, Enbridge is also required to replace close to 300 miles of one of its pipelines, after obtaining all necessary approvals. Enbridge’s Lakehead System delivers approximately 1.7 million barrels of oil in the United States each day.

“This agreement puts in place advanced leak detection and monitoring requirements to make sure a disaster like this one doesn’t happen again,” said Cynthia Giles, Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. “This comprehensive program – including an independent third party to audit compliance – will protect our waterways and the people who depend on them.”

“This settlement will make the delivery of our nation’s energy resources safer and more environmentally responsible,” said Assistant Attorney General John C. Cruden for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division. “It requires Enbridge to take robust measures to improve the maintenance and monitoring of its Lakehead pipeline system, protecting lakes, rivers, land and communities across the upper Midwest, as well as pay a significant penalty.”

In addition to payments required under the proposed settlement, Enbridge has already reimbursed the government for $57.8 million in cleanup costs from the Marshall spill and $650,000 for cleanup costs from the Romeoville spill, and Enbridge reportedly incurred costs in excess of $1 billion for required cleanup activities relating to the Marshall and Romeoville spills.

Under the settlement, Enbridge is committing to the following measures, which it estimates will cost at least $110 million:

•           implement an enhanced pipeline inspection and spill prevention program

•           implement enhanced measures to improve leak detection and control room operations

•           commit to additional leak detection and spill prevention requirements for a portion of Enbridge’s Line 5 that crosses the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan.

•           create and maintain an integrated database for its Lakehead Pipeline System

•           enhance its emergency spill response preparedness programs by conducting four emergency spill response exercises to test and practice Enbridge’s response to a major inland oil spill

•           improve training and coordination with state and local emergency responders by requiring incident command system training for employees, provide training to local responders, participate in area response planning and organize response exercises

•           hire an independent third party to assist with review of implementation of the requirements in the settlement agreement

The government’s complaint alleges that Enbridge owned or operated a 30 inch-pipeline, known as Line 6B, that ruptured near Marshall on July 25, 2010, discharging oil into the environment. Although the Line 6B rupture triggered numerous alarms in Enbridge’s control room, Enbridge failed to recognize a pipeline had ruptured until at least 17 hours later. In the meantime, Enbridge had restarted Line 6B on two separate occasions on July 26, 2010, pumping additional oil into the ruptured pipeline causing additional discharges of oil into the environment. Ultimately, Line 6B discharged at least 20,082 barrels of crude oil, much of which entered Talmadge Creek and flowed into the Kalamazoo River which flows to Lake Michigan. Flooding caused by heavy rains pushed the discharged oil over the river’s banks into its flood plains, and accelerated its migration over 35 miles downstream before it was contained. Enbridge later replaced Line 6B, which originates in Griffith, Ind., crosses the lower peninsula of Michigan and ends in Sarnia, Canada, with a new, larger pipeline, also known as Line 6B. The rupture and discharges were caused by stress corrosion cracking on the pipeline, control room misinterpretations and other problems, and pervasive organization failures at Enbridge.

The complaint also alleges that on September 9, 2010, another Enbridge pipeline, known as Line 6A, discharged at least 6,427 barrels of oil which Romeoville, Ill., much of which flowed through a drainage ditch into a retention pond in Romeoville.
