Funding From The National Park Service Helps To Preserve Indiana History

INDIANAPOLIS—Funding from the National Park Service will be used to rebuild and preserve 14 historic and archeological sites across Indiana, including a church in Angola,an  iron bridge in Fort Wayne, old camp sites near in Monroe and Morgan counties and an aging school building in Monticello.

The announcement of the $481,000 in grants, which must be matched by local communities, was made Wednesday by the Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology of the state Department of Natural Resources.

Through the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Funds (HPF) program, states receive money to preserve the landmarks and places significant in their history. Since 2000, Indiana has awarded $11 million to assist more than 500 historical projects. Among this year’s recipients are the Angola Powers Church, the City of Fort Wayne parks department, Ball State University and the Twin Lakes School Corporation.

Marcia Downs, chair of the Powers Church restoration committee in Angola, said her group has raised $17,000 of the $25,000 they need to match the grant to repair the church.

“The DNR people there in Indianapolis have been wonderful in helping us navigate this whole process,” Downs said, describing the old church as a unique building in their community.

It was built by two brothers, Calvin and Winn Powers, in 1876 and services concluded in the 1920s. The restoration committee began its work in 1976 for its 100th anniversary when it looked as it had a century ago with the original pews, bibles and organ.

“It’s a pretty unique building in that regard,” Downs said.

Downs and her team have history and visitors in mind. The church hosts three open services in the summer as well as a Christmas event and is available for weddings, tours and town meetings.

Restoring the church has been a community project for the residents of Angola she said. More than 50 pastors have volunteered to give a sermon at those events throughout the years, she said, and hundreds of people have made donations to the cause. A little boy handed her $5 and said he had nothing more to give.

The money will be used to restore most of the wood on the church’s bell tower. Water is leaking into the church and damaging the interior. Additionally, the steeple is rotting as it’s been “savaged by birds, bats and other creatures of the night,” Downs said, adding that the renovations are expected to start in the spring.

In Monticello, the Twin Lakes School Corporation’s administration building that was built in 1892 and has been serving as the administrative headquarters since 1963 will be renovated with its $26,558 grant. The building withstood a 1974 tornado that damaged downtown Monticello and was renovated in 1988. Jennifer Harrison, Twin Lakes Schools’ grant coordinator, said it looks the way it did decades ago, and the school wants to keep it that way.

Ball State University’s Applied Anthropology Laboratories will receive $49,999 for an archaeological survey at portions of Morgan-Monroe State Forest.

Christine Thomas, director of the project, said the work is aimed at uncovering the boundaries and features of two camps built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. In June, anthropology students from Ball State surveyed two 30-acre plots around the camps where they found an old log road, a cistern, a possible flagpole base, a drainage system and other artifacts. When they started, they knew the general location of the camps but little else.

Thomas said this type of work is needed for the sake of cultural significance.

“The CCC and the role it played in building some of these state forests and state parks is really important,” Thompson said. “There’s not a whole of those types of places left in Indiana. Each one of these has a story…Once people understand what might be there, it’s a good way to help people preserve and protect it.”

Fort Wayne is receiving a $50,000 grant for restoration of the Wells Street Bridge. Built-in 1884, spans 180 feet across the St. Mary’s River and was used by vehicles until 1982. It is now used by pedestrians and bicyclists in Promenade Park.

Fort Wayne is receiving $50,000 in a matching grant for the rehabilitation of the Wells Street Bridge, a metal Whipple truss built-in 1884. Provided photo.

Sarah Nichter, the grant writer for the project, said the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department values history, so they budgeted to match the $50,000 gift. Promenade Park opened last year and has been popular since, she said, so the bridge is now connected to over 100 miles of trails in the city.

“It is such a fun riverfront park, and the bridge is sort of a central piece to it,” Nichter said. “The St. Mary’s River can get quite, well, flooded. This bridge has held up so well.”

Other grant recipients include the cities of Huntington and Vincennes, DeKalb County and the Floyd County Historical Society.

Webs of Beauty

Many people have unwittingly walked into a spider web. It is an unsettling feeling; however, finding a spider web glistening in the sun is amazing and wonderful.

Spiders construct webs for shelter and food. There are four types of webs: tangle, sheet, tunnel, and orb. Tangle webs are just that—a tangled mess of silk often seen in basement corners.

Sheet webs lie flat and can be seen in the early morning on top of the grass. Tunnel webs lie flat and have a tunnel where the spider hides. The most iconic type of web is the orb web. This web has a circular pattern with the spider typically resting in the middle. The silk that forms the circles is sticky, so it can catch insects. The strands that go from the outside to the center are not sticky. Most orb spiders are nocturnal and spend the day hiding near their web.

At night, depending on the species, spiders will repair or rebuild their web. See how many different types of webs you can find while visiting your favorite state park.

Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” August 9, 2020

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

National Award Presented to member of Department of Correction & Employee of GTL

Indianapolis, Ind. - Earlier today Chris Eloiza, the Intelligence Coordinator for the Dept. of Correction, and Gabrielle Padilla, a Supervisor of Intelligence Services with GTL, the contract provider of communication services for offenders at Indiana correctional facilities, were recognized with a national award.

The award, from the National Corrections/Custodial Intelligence Sharing Group (NCCISG), an affiliate to the national Law Enforcement Intelligence Units (LEIU) organization was the result of Chris and Gabrielle being nominated by the Oklahoma liaison for LEIU, Nick Chaffin.  Mr. Chaffin is the Resident Agent in Charge for the Oklahoma Department of Correction.  In Mr. Chaffin’s nomination letter to the LEIU board, which ultimately resulted in today’s award, he stated, “As the Intelligence Coordinator and Lead Analyst for the Indiana Department of Correction  – Office of Investigations and Intelligence, [Chris] and Gabrielle continually provide leadership and display the utmost professionalism throughout the correctional intelligence community and the criminal intelligence community as a whole.”

The letter went on to highlight specific examples of service that resulted in their recognition.  The most prominent being the development of a one-week Correctional Intelligence Analyst Academy, which was attended by 25 people from five different states and represented 11 separate law enforcement and correctional agencies.

“Most people fail to recognize the level of dedication, commitment and investigative work that goes into gathering actionable intelligence of criminal activities in a correctional environment.” said Commissioner Rob Carter of the Indiana Dept. of Correction. “It speaks very highly of Chris and Gabrielle to be recognized with this award by a national organization that’s committed to making correctional facilities safer through intelligence gathering and sharing.”

Sheriff’s Office K-9 Tracks Three Felons in One Night

0

A Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team aids in the arrest of four suspects during two police pursuits over the weekend.

On Friday, August 07, 2020 at approximately 11:23pm, the Sheriff’s Office was requested to assist Indiana State Police (ISP) troopers during a vehicle pursuit near US41 and Waterworks Road. Pursuing ISP units were attempting to stop a red 2001 Dodge Ram with false/fictitious license plates that was operating without headlights. After a brief pursuit, ISP troopers lost sight of the vehicle near Waterworks Rd near Nugent Drive. Responding deputies located the vehicle on a farm access road and witnessed the driver flee into a soybean field.

ISP troopers and sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter and a Sheriff’s Office K-9 team began tracking the suspect. The suspect was tracked through the soybean field, across a creek and through woods before being apprehended. The suspect, later identified as Jerry Dewayne Brown, had been tracked nearly one mile from where the track began. Brown was located attempting to hide in a large bush.

Later that morning on Saturday, August 08, 2020 at approximately 02:14am, Sheriff’s Office deputies observed a vehicle with an equipment violation that was weaving between two lanes. Suspecting that the driver may be intoxicated, sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near Fulton Avenue and Georgia Street. The driver fled from deputies at a low speed until the vehicle failed to navigate a turn at the intersection of Kratzville Road and Huber Avenue. The vehicle struck a fence and then struck a tree before coming to rest on the property of Locust Hill Cemetery. Two of the three occupants fled the vehicle, which contained a stolen firearm. Jerel Nathaniel Howard surrendered immediately and was placed into custody at the vehicle.

Responding Sheriff’s Office deputies and Evansville Police Department officers set up a perimeter as a Sheriff’s Office K-9 team began tracking the suspects. After nearly one half mile, the K-9 located both suspects who were later identified as Shacorey Hawkins and Trevor Jordan Brown. Both suspects surrendered to the K-9 team before being apprehended. The suspects were hiding along a creek in the 1200-block of W. Buena Vista Road.
