A Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team aids in the arrest of four suspects during two police pursuits over the weekend.

On Friday, August 07, 2020 at approximately 11:23pm, the Sheriff’s Office was requested to assist Indiana State Police (ISP) troopers during a vehicle pursuit near US41 and Waterworks Road. Pursuing ISP units were attempting to stop a red 2001 Dodge Ram with false/fictitious license plates that was operating without headlights. After a brief pursuit, ISP troopers lost sight of the vehicle near Waterworks Rd near Nugent Drive. Responding deputies located the vehicle on a farm access road and witnessed the driver flee into a soybean field.

ISP troopers and sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter and a Sheriff’s Office K-9 team began tracking the suspect. The suspect was tracked through the soybean field, across a creek and through woods before being apprehended. The suspect, later identified as Jerry Dewayne Brown, had been tracked nearly one mile from where the track began. Brown was located attempting to hide in a large bush.

Later that morning on Saturday, August 08, 2020 at approximately 02:14am, Sheriff’s Office deputies observed a vehicle with an equipment violation that was weaving between two lanes. Suspecting that the driver may be intoxicated, sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near Fulton Avenue and Georgia Street. The driver fled from deputies at a low speed until the vehicle failed to navigate a turn at the intersection of Kratzville Road and Huber Avenue. The vehicle struck a fence and then struck a tree before coming to rest on the property of Locust Hill Cemetery. Two of the three occupants fled the vehicle, which contained a stolen firearm. Jerel Nathaniel Howard surrendered immediately and was placed into custody at the vehicle.

Responding Sheriff’s Office deputies and Evansville Police Department officers set up a perimeter as a Sheriff’s Office K-9 team began tracking the suspects. After nearly one half mile, the K-9 located both suspects who were later identified as Shacorey Hawkins and Trevor Jordan Brown. Both suspects surrendered to the K-9 team before being apprehended. The suspects were hiding along a creek in the 1200-block of W. Buena Vista Road.
