MERRY CHRISTMAS
and HAPPY HOLIDAYS

December 22, 2020

What matters most to you?

Indiana’s 2021 legislative session is scheduled to begin in January, and your thoughts and opinions are helpful as we work together to tackle important issues like health care, education and jobs.

Please click here to send me a message about what’s important to you and your family.

[Click here to share your thoughts with me.]

Knowing your thoughts on issues facing our state is important, and your feedback will help guide me as I craft legislation and vote on possible new laws. Please forward this to others in our community, so I can hear from them as well.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Indiana’s Bright Future

This was another big week. Just yesterday, we were excited to officially announce the inaugural class of the Indiana Republican Diversity Leadership Series! I first told you about this program when we were launching back in July, with the aim of helping Hoosier Republicans from diverse backgrounds learn more about our party, government, and opportunities to get more involved. It’s part of our long-term efforts to bring more historically underrepresented communities into civic leadership roles in our state, and it’s something I’ve been talking about since becoming chairman.

I have to tell you, I’m really excited about this inaugural class. You can check out their bios here, and you’ll see that this class includes Hoosiers with backgrounds in the military, law enforcement, the ministry, business, tech, nonprofits, public service and beyond. With their experience and the connections and information they’ll gain through our class sessions starting in January, I know that this class (and our state) has a bright future ahead.

And speaking of our state’s bright future, happy 204th birthday to Indiana today. We’ve accomplished some great things together, and I know that our best days are still yet to come.

PHOTO: I still smile when looking back at this photo of our Indiana Republican Diversity Leadership Series advisory council. They’re doing a great job helping guide this program, and I know they’ll provide great mentorship for our class.

Continuing to Build One Indiana For All

It’s been another busy week for Governor Holcomb!

On Tuesday, Governor Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation announced that 241 Indiana cities, towns, and counties received a combined $101 million in state matching funds for local road projects through Community Crossings, a component of the Governor’s Next Level Roads program. For a full list of communities receiving matching funds in this latest round, click here.

During his weekly COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday, Governor Holcomb provided his own personal top 10 list of things we can all do to keep each other safe from COVID-19 in the coming months. Together, we can continue to fight the spread of COVID-19 in our state and enjoy a safe holiday season. Check out his list below:

  1. Limit the size of your gatherings by following the metrics
  2. Pause non-emergent procedures done in the in-patient hospital setting to free up hospital beds
  3. Follow the mask mandate
  4. Keep six feet between yourself and others; mask up when you’re socially distanced and when you’re not
  5. Wash your hands throughout the day
  6. Get tested if you’re sick or symptomatic
  7. Stay home and isolate if you test positive for COVID-19
  8. Employers, talk to employees to help them understand how their activities outside of work affect the workplace and community
  9. Give blood if you are able. Food pantries need help, too
  10. Stay informed about the distribution of the vaccine in 2021

Governor Holcomb was also elected to join the Republican Governors Associations’ executive committee in 2021, after serving last year as policy chairman.

To stay up to date on the latest developments, please make sure you’re following Governor Holcomb on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

My Committee Assignments

This week, I was appointed to serve on the Senate Committee on Health and Provider Services; the Senate Committee on Local Government and the Senate Committee on Public Policy during the 122nd Indiana General Assembly.

The health and well-being of all Hoosiers remains a top priority of mine for the upcoming legislative session. With the circumstances surrounding the 2021 session, health care issues like price transparency are paramount and must be addressed with effective solutions.

Committee hearings can be viewed online by visiting iga.in.gov. Legislative calendars, agendas, vote tallies and proposed legislation can also be found on this site.

The 2021 legislative session ceremonially began with Organization Day on Nov. 17. The Senate is scheduled to reconvene for session Jan. 4.

New Bill Pay Kiosk Locations Offer a Convenient Way for EWSU Customers to Pay

Evansville Water and Sewer Utility is pleased to announce new payment options for customers to pay in person near Haynie’s Corner Arts District and on the city’s south side. New EWSU PaySite® bill payment kiosks are available inside The Potter’s Wheel at 333 E. Jefferson Avenue and at Mike’s Food Mart at 407 E. Riverside Drive.

The bill payment kiosks are located near the homes and workplace of many EWSU customers who had frequently paid their bills in person at the Civic Center. That option ended when the EWSU Customer Service window at the Civic Center closed earlier this year due to the coronavirus. The bill payment kiosk located near the main entrance at the Civic Center is still available. EWSU payments can be made at all three kiosks locations with cash, check, or credit card. The payment process is fast, easy, convenient, and secure.

EWSU also offers the convenience of automated payments through the MyWater smartphone app available through the Apple Store and Goggle Play, and online at https://mywater.ewsu.com/portal. Payments may also be made by calling EWSU Customer Service at 812-436-7846, or at any Old National Bank location.

Commentary: Some Things Change, Some Don’t

Commentary: Some Things Change, Some Don’t

By John Krull
TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS – Four years ago, my son and I took a trip we still talk about.

We drove to Cleveland, Ohio, to see our beloved Cleveland Indians play the Chicago Cubs in the first game of the 2016 World Series.

John Krull, publisher, TheStatehouseFile.com

We sprinted from Indianapolis as soon as my son got out of school, pushing through without stops to get to the game. It was a chilly night, and our seats were up in the stratosphere. Even dressed in several layers, we had to hunch down to stay warm.

We had planned to stop at a hotel in Columbus after the game to catch a couple of hours of sleep before driving back to Indy and another school day for my son, along with another workday for me. But there were no rooms to be had.

So, we drove through the night, arriving back at our house a little after 5 a.m. We spooked the dog and awakened my wife and daughter – both of whom thought we were more than a little crazy – from sound slumbers when we came in.

My son and I slept for about an hour each, then limped our ways through the rest of the day.

It was worth it.

The reason it was worth it is that my son and I were and are devoted Cleveland Indians fans.

Critics have pointed out through the years that the team name – Indians—was offensive to many people. They also have noted that the longtime team logo – Chief Wahoo – was racist.

Both points are valid.

But I wasn’t a fan of the name or of the logo. I was a fan of the team.

The source of my devotion isn’t that hard to determine.

I was born in Cleveland. The first professional baseball games I ever saw were Indians games my father took me to when I was barely old enough to walk. Even though I understood only a little of what was going on out on the field, I loved the experience of going to the ballpark with my dad.

I learned then the clichés that also are eternal truths.

Hot dogs always taste better at a baseball game.

And, of course, a bad day at the ballpark beats a good day at the office every time.

Several decades later, when I became a father, the first major-league games I ever took my daughter and my son to were Indians games. My daughter’s interest in baseball waned fast, but my son became obsessed with the game.

At least once, often two or three times, he and I would travel to Cleveland for a weekend to catch two, three or even four games.

One memorable time, my father came with us. Between games, we drove over to the lower working-class neighborhood where my parents lived when I was a child. In the grassy stretch behind the duplex that had been our home in the early 1960s, my dad, my son,   and I played a game, just as Dad and I had when I was small.

I tried to explain to my son once that being a Tribe fan could be a painful experience. I told him that I had lived more than a half-century and that the Indians hadn’t won the World Series once in my lifetime.

But that may be the point.

I don’t root for the Cleveland Indians because I expect them to win every game or every year. I root for them for the same reason I root for Cleveland and other struggling rustbelt cities – because I believe in underdogs, in the value of the little guy, in the hope that good, hardworking people always will find ways to endure and build good lives.

More than that, I’m an Indians fan because I think of their games as experiences I had with my father and their ballpark as the place where I once watched my 80-year-old father gleefully chase his grandson around the bases when the Tribe opened the field after a game.

The Indians are set to change their name. The team acknowledged that the name is offensive and therefore should be changed.

It’s a good decision.

While the name may change, other things won’t.

I’ll still be a guy who was born in Cleveland.

And my son and I still will be fans.

Trump Administration Sets the Pace for Food Loss and Waste Reduction Efforts to Continue

EPA, USDA, And FDA Renew Formal Agreement Aimed At Reducing Food Waste

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the renewal of the joint agency formal agreement including the Winning on Reducing Food Waste Initiative. The agreement reaffirms the agencies’ commitment to improving coordination and communication efforts to better educate Americans on the impacts and importance of reducing food loss and waste. Food loss and waste negatively impact food security, the economy, communities, and the environment.
Since the Trump Administration launched the Winning on Reducing Food Waste Initiative, the collaborative effort has achieved great success. Public-private partnerships, like the United States Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champions, are key to successfully reducing food loss and waste by implementing proven strategies and sharing best practices. In 2020, the Trump Administration welcomed ten new businesses and organizations to the 2030 Champions.
Today’s renewed three-year agreement will continue to build on these successful partnerships and reiterate our shared commitment to work towards the national goal of reducing food loss and waste by 50 percent by 2030.
“The United States is getting a handle on its serious food waste problem,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “The three-year renewal of this joint agency agreement will help our country achieve its ambitious goal of cutting food waste by 50 percent by 2030.”
“Our nation’s agricultural abundance should be used to nourish those in need, not fill the trash,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue. “As the world’s population continues to grow and the food systems continue to evolve, now is the time to continue to educate consumers and businesses alike on the need for food waste reduction.”

“We’ve seen great strides in food loss and waste reduction since first entering the joint agency formal agreement with our Federal colleagues, and through collaborative efforts with our public and private partners,” said  FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. “At FDA, we’ve encouraged food manufacturers and retailers to standardize the way quality-based date labels are used on packaged foods and developed videos and materials to educate consumers. With these continued partnerships and important efforts, we’re on track to see a 50% reduction of food waste by 2030.”

As part of the Winning on Reducing Food Waste Initiative, EPA, USDA, and FDA issued its FY2019-2020 Federal Interagency Strategy in April 2019, which identifies six priority areas on which the agencies will focus their efforts to reduce food loos and waste in the U.S. In May 2020, the Federal Interagency Strategy was updated by listing contributing efforts for each of the strategy’s six priority action areas:

  1. Priority Area 1: Enhance Interagency Coordination
  2. Priority Area 2: Increase Consumer Education and Outreach Efforts
  3. Priority Area 3: Improve Coordination and Guidance on Food Loss and Waste Measurement
  4. Priority Area 4: Clarify and Communicate Information on Food Safety, Food Date Labels, and Food Donations
  5. Priority Area 5: Collaborate with Private Industry to Reduce Food Loss and Waste Across the Supply Chain
  6. Priority Area 6: Encourage Food Waste Reduction by Federal Agencies in their Respective Facilities

The agencies also launched partnerships with organizations at the forefront of food loss and waste reduction efforts. In April 2019, the agencies signed an agreement with ReFED, a network of the nation’s leading business, nonprofit, foundation, and government leaders committed to reducing U.S. food waste. In October 2019, another partnership with the Food Waste Reduction Alliance, formalized collaboration on education and outreach efforts with three major sectors of the supply chain: food manufacturing, retail, and restaurant and foodservice.

SNAP Recipients In Indiana May Now Purchase Online At ALDI Stores

SNAP Recipients In Indiana May Now Purchase Online At ALDI Stores, Through Partnership With Instacart Online Grocery Platform

INDIANAPOLIS –SNAP recipients in Indiana now have a third option for using their Hoosier Works EBT cards to purchase groceries online for pickup or delivery: ALDI, working in partnership with Instacart, joins Amazon and Walmart, which were approved for online purchases earlier this year. SNAP participants are automatically eligible to participate in this program and do not need to apply.

“We are pleased to add another retailer to provide Hoosier SNAP recipients with this important service – particularly those who are most at risk for COVID-19 infection and those who are homebound,” said Jennifer Sullivan, M.D., M.P.H., FSSA secretary. “We are thankful to our federal partners at the Food and Nutrition Service for working with us to continue to remove barriers and provide safety and convenience for Hoosier families. While this service will initially and immediately address needs caused by the pandemic, we intend to keep this service in place permanently.”

Currently, ALDI via Instacart, Amazon and Walmart are the only Indiana retailers that have been approved for online purchasing by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. More information about using these online retailers in Indiana is available here.

  • To purchase online from ALDI, Indiana SNAP participants will shop via the Instacart app or online at www.Instacart.com.  (Users can get more information here.)
  • Customers can create an Instacart account here. Then, they can enter their Hoosier Works EBT card information as a form of payment in their profile. (They will also need to add a secondary form of payment for non-food items such as taxes, tips and fees per SNAP guidelines.)
  • Customers can then enter their ZIP code to determine if they are near a participating ALDI store, and begin shopping and selecting items from ALDI’s SNAP-eligible products. Once items are added to their cart, customers will be able to select how much of their benefits they would like to allocate to the order.
  • ALDI delivery and pickup via Instacart will be available daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., local time. Available time slots for pickup and delivery are listed during checkout and vary by store. Orders for delivery and pickup can be placed by customers for receipt in as fast as an hour or scheduled days in advance.

It is important to note that any delivery fees that may apply to the online purchase may NOT be paid with SNAP benefits. However, through March 16, 2021, Instacart will waive delivery and/or pickup fees on the first three SNAP EBT orders for each Indiana SNAP customer with a Hoosier Works EBT card associated with their account.

If SNAP recipients have any problems using their card for ordering, they should call the number on the back of their Hoosier Works EBT card for customer service.

SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and was formerly called Food Stamps. SNAP benefits can only be used for food products and for plants and seeds used to grow food. A full list of items that can and cannot be purchased with SNAP is available here: https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/eligible-food-items

TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) benefits, which are also provided via Hoosier Works EBT card, may not be used for online purchasing. Currently, more than 680,000 Hoosiers receive SNAP benefits and nearly 13,000 Hoosiers receive TANF assistance.

Hoosiers may apply for SNAP or TANF at www.FSSABenefits.in.gov. They may also call 800-403-0864 for assistance.

Casey Transfers To USI Men’s Basketball

0

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball and Head Coach Stan Gouard announced the transfer of six-foot-nine freshman center K’suan Casey from the University of Tennessee-Martin. Casey will be eligible to join the Screaming Eagles, pending the completion of the NCAA transfer process.

“K’suan brings values that we believe in as a program,” said Gouard. “He adds size and toughness to the roster and we are thrilled to have him.

“K’suan is all about team success and has worked extremely hard on his body that will allow him to have success in our up-tempo style of play,” continued Gouard. “He is a winner and we are so excited to officially welcome him to the Screaming Eagles family.”

Prior to attending and practicing with UT-Martin in the fall semester, Casey was a 2020 Kentucky All-State honoree and a two-time Kentucky All-Star (2019 and 2020) at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School (Madisonville, Kentucky). He averaged 18.5 points in 2019-20 and led the Maroons to a 31-3 mark.

The incoming freshman center finished his career at North Hopkins with 1,897 career points – ranking second behind the University of Kentucky great and current Saint Louis University Head Coach Travis Ford – and 1,213 career rebounds. He also helped lead the Maroons to 97 victories during his high school career.

The Screaming Eagles are slated to return to action in the New Year when they visit Truman State University on January 3 and Quincy University on January 5. USI is 2-1 this season, winning their last two games.

“RIGHT JAB AND MIDDLE JAB AND LEFT JAB” DECEMBER 22, 2020

0

Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have a couple of commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so2
