- The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a woman after she perjured herself on the witness stand.
- On Tuesday, March 29, 2016 Ms. Rachel Ann Hopkinson gave witness testimony at the trial of Mr. Tony Lee Monks. Prior to the trial, a Sheriff’s Office detective assigned to the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Drug Task Force learned that Mr. Monks had been coaching Ms. Hopkinson regarding what to say during her testimony. Mr. Monks and Ms. Hopkinson conspired to commit perjury in the hopes of getting the physical evidence against Mr. Monks suppressed at his trial.
Mr. Monks was on trial for charges stemming from a May 2014 arrest in which Evansville Policeofficers were called to assist Ms. Hopkinson retrieve some property from an apartment she shared with Mr. Monks. The officers found methamphetamine and methamphetamine making material on Mr. Monks’ person as well as inside his apartment.
During yesterday’s trial, Ms. Hopkinson was sworn under oath to tell the truth to the court, but falsely testified that she did not give officers permission to enter her residence. Phone audio captured by the recently installed inmate communications system at the jail demonstrated that Ms. Hopkinson’s testimony had been completely fabricated.
After Ms. Hopkinson finished testifying, she was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies and transported to the jail.
