STATEHOUSE (Nov. 4, 2021)

— Nontraditional female students in Indiana can apply for a scholarship through the Political Organization for Women’s Education and Representation before the Nov. 15 deadline, according to Vanderburgh County lawmakers.

State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) said scholarship recipients could include women who are returning to school after a hiatus, changing careers, seeking advancement in their career or work life, and stay-at-home moms entering the workplace who are in need of additional education or training. This scholarship is not intended for recent high school graduates or women who are eligible for or have already received other significant financial aid.

“Many applicants are already strong role models who are accomplishing great things in their communities, and they deserve support to take the next step and achieve their goals,” McNamara said. “Scholarship recipients certainly have earned this financial help and I encourage anyone interested to apply before the Nov. 15 deadline.”

A bipartisan selection committee awards 18 scholarships – two from each congressional district – of $750 each. The scholarship check will be made directly to the institution with instructions to apply the funds to the student’s current account to pay for school tuition, books and fees. Qualified applicants include non-traditional female students whose education may have been delayed or interrupted, and the committee will consider financial need, personal vision, service to the community, post-education plans.

“These scholarships provide a financial boost for Hoosier women who are tackling their academic goals,” said State Rep. Tim O’Brien (R-Evansville). “Whether you’re returning to school or changing careers, consider applying for a POWER Scholarship.”

The scholarships can be used for the 2022 spring semester. With the application deadline on Nov. 15, scholarship recipients will be announced on Dec. 17, 2021, and granted before Dec. 31, 2021.

“Every little bit helps when it comes to paying for college or job training programs, and this support can help applicants reach their goals,” said State Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka). “Many of these scholarship recipients go on to pursue exciting new career paths and contribute greatly to our state’s success.”
