USI sweeps DH from UMSL Eagles move over .500 in GLVC play​​​​​​​

University of Southern Indiana Baseball swept doubleheader from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, winning both games, 9-0, Friday at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles go to 10-11 overall and 8-7 in the GLVC, after today’s action, while UMSL is 5-17 overall, 3-12 GLVC.

Game 1:
USI sophomore outfielder Austin Moody and sophomore right-hander Garrett Welch led the Eagles to a 9-0 shutout of the Tritons in the opening game of the doubleheader.

The Eagles jumped out in front early with three runs in the opening frame to lead, 3-0. USI would add a tally in the third and seal the victory with five in the fifth to complete the scoring of the 9-0 victory.

Moody led the way at the plate for the Eagles, going three-for-four with two runs scored and two RBIs. The sophomore also was a triple shy of the cycle, after hitting a home run in the third.

Senior leftfielder Bryce Krizan also added three hits in the victory with a three-for-three performance. Krizan crossed the plate with a run and drove in another in the victory.

Welch threw six of the seven innings of the opening game victory to get his second win of the season. The sophomore hurler blanked the Tritons on five hits and two walks, while tying a season-best with six strikeouts.

Game 2:
Eagles’ senior right-hander Jacob Bowles blanked the Triton for six innings on one hit as USI completed the doubleheader sweep of UMSL, 9-0, in the nightcap. The victory moves USI over the .500 mark for the first time in the GLVC since the beginning of the league schedule.

Bowles (2-2) allowed one hit in six scoreless frames, while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts in a dominating performance.

Offensively, USI scored all nine of its runs in the first three innings, posting a three-spot in each frame. Junior third baseman Michael Conner paced the Eagles with a three-for-three performance, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. Junior second baseman Ethan Hunter, who scored three times in the nightcap, and sophomore centerfielder Austin Moody also had a pair of RBIs in the second-game victory.

The USI five-game homestand comes to an end April 7 when Kentucky Wesleyan College visits the USI Baseball Field. The Eagles hold a 98-66 overall series lead over the Panthers, but KWC took both games in the series in 2019, winning 12-7 in Owensboro and 9-4 at the USI Baseball Field.
