USI at home for big weekend​​​​​​​

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field for a big weekend homestand to conclude the 2019 regular season. The Screaming Eagles are set to host Maryville University Friday at 5 p.m. before welcoming Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday at noon for Senior Day.

The four USI seniors – defender Loryn Willis; midfielder/forward Caroline Canoy; midfielder Courtney Spicer; and forward/midfielder Emilie Blomenkamp –  will be honored prior to the start of the game Sunday. Match coverage can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.

Week 9 Eagle Notes: 

Eagles split on the road: The Eagles salvaged a split last week on the road in the GLVC, falling in a heartbreaker to Truman State Univesity, 2-1, in overtime before bouncing back to defeat Quincy University, 2-0. Freshman defender Natalie Jostes had the goal in the loss to Truman, while sophomore forward Katlyn Andres and junior forward Taylor McCormick had the goals in the win at Quincy.

The GLVC Standings: USI enters this week’s action tied for fifth in the GLVC with Maryville University. USI is a game ahead of sixth place Truman State and a game behind fourth-place Bellarmine in the standings. The top eight teams qualify for the GLVC Tournament with the top four earning the right to host a first-round match.

Last five games: USI is .500 over the last five matches, going 2-2-1 during the stretch, but outscoring the opposition, 7-6.

Scoring Leaders: Sophomore forward Katlyn Andres has taken over the team scoring lead with 15 points on six goals and three assists. Junior forward Maggie Winter follows close behind with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Junior defender Madelyne Juenger has a team-high five assists.

Between the posts:  Freshman goalkeeper Maya Etienne leads the Eagles in goal with a 9-3-1 record, a 0.66 goals against average, eight shutouts, and 72 saves during her first collegiate campaign. Etienne is one shutout away from tying Angie Gries (1996-99) for the USI single-season record (9).

Schoenstein enters his 4th year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 39-23-8 mark, a share of a GLVC regular season title, and three-straight GLVC Tournament appearances.

Maryville in 2019: The Saints of Maryville are 9-4-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the GLVC being swept on the first half of a four-match road swing. Maryville also is 2-3-0 in its last five matches.

USI vs. Maryville: USI leads the all-time series with Maryville, 6-4-1, after a pair of wins last year at Strassweg Field, winning 3-1 during the regular season and 2-0 in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. Overall, the Eagles won three of the last four matches between the two programs.

Missouri S&T in 2019:  Missouri S&T is 5-7-3 overall and 5-6-2 in the GLVC after losing to the University of Indianapolis, 1-0, and tying Bellarmine University in double-overtime, 0-0. The Miners are .500 in their last five matches with a 2-2-1 mark.

USI vs. Miners: The Eagles lead the all-time series with Missouri S&T, 10-5-1, after the two teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie in 2019. USI also has battled the Miners to a draw over the last five years at 2-2-1.
