Stein named NABC All-Midwest District

University of Southern Indiana senior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) was named was named first-team All-Midwest District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) in a vote by the district’s head coaches. The NABC award is the second of Stein’s career and the 33rd in the history of the USI men’s basketball program.

Stein, who was named first-team Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-Midwest Region last week, leads the Screaming Eagles with 20.6 points per game in addition to averaging 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest. He also ranks second in the GLVC, 42nd nationally, in scoring and first in the league, eighth nationally, in free throws made.

The three-time first-team All-GLVC performer also became the third USI player to reach 2,000 career points this year. He also need three points to tie Chris Bowles for second all-time in scoring at USI.

In addition to the All-District and All-Region awards, Stein was named third-team Google Cloud Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors; first-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference; NCAA II Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player; and GLVC All-Tournament.

USI will open the NCAA Division II Elite Eight action Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Ford Center, when it faces the third-ranked West Texas A&M University. USI is the seventh seed in the Elite Eight, while West Texas A&M is the second seed.
