Senate passes bill allowing adults to be arrested for crimes they committed in youth

  •

The Indiana Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would allow an adult to be arrested for a crime they committed as a youth.

Sen. Stacey Donato, R-Logansport.

The bill is authored by Sen. Stacey Donato, R-Logansport, Sen. Aaron Freeman, R-Indianapolis, and Sen. Eric Koch, R-Bedford, and revolves around adult court jurisdiction over delinquent acts.

Senate Bill 464 provides that a juvenile court would not have jurisdiction over a person if they committed a crime between the ages 12 and 18 but were 21 or older when charged with the offense.

This would apply to felonies like murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, rape, criminal deviant conduct, robbery (if committed while armed with a deadly weapon and resulting in bodily injury), and child molestation.

Sen. Greg Taylor, D-Indianapolis, outlined his opposition with an example: If a 15-year-old committed one of those felonies and was charged at age 23, then the juvenile court would have no jurisdiction. But if that person were caught at 15, then they could go to juvenile court.

“That is just flat-out wrong,” Taylor said.

The bill passed, 31-13.

  1. With the bill to arrest adults for their youth crime is one of the most dacronion miscarriage of just. This could definitely cost some politicians a vote.

  2. If a child comments a crime at 12,13 so on
It is proven their brains are NOT fully developed.
There for they have to be charged at the age they done it..
This is one of the most ridiculous, thing I have ever read. These ppl need voted out…

      • I agree. I have never in my73 years heard of such a backwards way of correcting a child after they become an adult. What kind of a parent disciplines a child after the fact. NO ONE IN THEIR MIND!!! APPARENTLY ADULTS AND POLITICIANS IN YOUR STATE AND ELECTED OFFICIALS HAVE NOT RECEIVED PROPER UPBRINGING OR SCHOOLING AND SHOULD NOT BE SERVING AT ANY POST THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE HANDLING OF YOUNG PEOPLES CORRECTIONS OR SENTENCING. SURELY THEY ARE NOT QUALIFIED IN ANY WAY OR MEANS!!! THEY SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THEIR POSITIONS.

  3. I wonder if this law applies to those kids from affluent families who get a slap on the wrist for crimes that anyone else would get the book thrown at them. Their crimes always involves Murder and Rape and the notion that they come from a “good family with values” and he/she has their whole lives ahead of them, prison would snatch away all of their dreams and aspirations…all of that went out the window when they committed that crime no matter how old they were. It’s usually the poor or middle class that examples are made of in the name of justice and the other 1% get off Scott free! “They” should do like they did when Great Britain discovered Australia and sent all of their prisoners there to fend for themselves at the bottom. Find a remote Island, make it a prison colony and send your worst prisoners there, the United States is leading world in the Prison Industry Complex, that is alarming and not 1 person in government is doing their best to put an end to this.

  4. Damn straight you know she got a agenda something happened in her deminited circle and she promised vote for me and I’ll make sure he pays like you said better get them all out politics and quick!!!!!!!

  5. This is completely and definitely OUT OF LINE!!!!!
I feel like the government is trying for population control. One more easy way to know exactly where everyone is.
    #they’reouttocontrol

  6. What an absolute travesty. This is what happens when someone with an axe to grind gets into office, they go after our children.
