On Monday, July 20, 2015 at 3:49pm the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Pearl Drive in reference to a report of suspicious circumstance involving a person possibly armed with a gun.

Upon arrival sheriff’s deputies met with the 911 caller, Mr. Stephen John Poag, 60, of Mount Vernon, IN.  Mr. Poag advised he had been involved in a confrontation with another motorist. Mr. Poag explained that he had been “cut off” by the other motorist on the Lloyd Expressway and then followed the other motorist to a parking lot off of Pearl Drive.  Mr. Poag admitted to challenging the other motorist to get out of his vehicle in order to discuss the matter.  Mr. Poag claimed the other motorist pointed something metallic at him, which he believed to be a handgun.  Mr. Poag then left the area and called 911, providing a description of the motorist and his vehicle.

A description of the motorist was broadcast to all Sheriff’s Office and Evansville Police Department units.   A police officer then located a vehicle matching the description provided by Mr. Poag.  The driver, Mr. James Nathan Ipock, was stopped on Riverside Drive near Sycamore St.  A Ruger .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun was found inside the vehicle.

Mr. Ipock denied pointing the weapon at Mr. Poag, but did admit to holding the handgun up when Mr. Poag confronted him in the parking lot.  Mr. Ipock explained that Mr. Poag had followed him into the parking lot and challenged him to get out of his vehicle.  Mr. Ipock indicated that Mr. Poag was the aggressor and had in fact attempted to block his vehicle while in the parking lot.

Mr. Ipock was found to have an expired Kentucky concealed handgun permit and was subsequently arrested for Carrying a Handgun without a Permit as a Class A Misdemeanor.

The incident remains under investigation.

ARRESTED:

James Nathan Ipock (pictured above), 37, of Henderson, KY. Carrying a Handgun without a Permit as a Class A Misdemeanor.

  1. When I left work I saw a man come flying up and proceed to pass me as I was about a quarter mile past the last Bristol Myers building. The man passed me at a high rate of speed and continued on until he was about a half mile ahead of me and he was weaving in and out of traffic. I was on my way to fifth third bank as it closed at four and I left work at 3:30. When I get to the stop light to turn by Stadium 16 Chuckles/Wendy’s this guy is in front of me turning. He proceeded to turn the same way towards Stadium 16 and then just stopped in front of me and tried to wave me around into on coming traffic. I said no and he started yelling at me to go around and I gave him the finger. He turned into Stadium 16 and did a turnaround and chased me into 5/3 where he tried to get me to fight while blocking me from getting out of my car with his truck. The entire time he is waving a stick and has a huge dog in his passenger seat. The man has no teeth and has just chased me down for no reason other than I flipped him the bird. I am trying to get into to the bank before it closes so I flash my legally owned pistol I have had since 2007. Thinking this will deter the guy from chasing me any further it doesn’t. He blocks me in the parking spot and I tell him to leave me alone again. He goes across the street as I go into the bank. The 5 ladies in the bank saw what had happened and as I go to leave the man is behind my car again this time on the phone. Calling the police I am sure. I ask the lady at 5/3,if I should stay and she said no because if he didn’t hit me or I him that I shouldn’t be concerned. I was doing everything I could to get away from this guy driving like a maniac and threatening random people (me). I was taken to jail on a technicality of expired CCDWL. In jail I was not fed until breakfast the next morning. I was not allowed a phone call until 1:00 pm the next day and after court at that. I spent my time in jail with just a blanket in a holding cell with 13 people, most of whom were nasty addicts. By the time I got out of jail the next day I had a message on my phone telling me I was terminated from Bristol Myers and still have no explanation as to why. I tried to get my phone call to call into to work because I had 40 hours of call in time. I asked repeatedly throughout the night to use the phone. I was just defending myself from a deranged driver the best way I could. I now sit here without a job because of a difference in laws. I live in KY and would have been legal in KY because of open carry in KY. Indiana CCDWL is for life and KY has to renew every 5 years. I had to make a judgement call to let mine lapse because I had bills to pay and was starting a new job back in March. Thank you for trying to make me a welfare recipient.

  2. Not once did I cut Mr. Poag off. He went flying by me at excessive speeds just as I had left work. He continued on weaving in and out of traffic. He just happened to be turning at the same time I was and he just up and decides I was following him. I was going to my bank. He stopped with his right turn signal on and waved me around into on coming traffic. Mr Poag is a liar and I am wanting to know why he wasn’t charged for chasing me down and threatening me with violence for no reason other than he is an idiot. I showed him a pistol only after he aggressively chased me down and asked me multiple times to fight. He started the whole thing and would not leave me alone. My god, he chased me down and illegally passed a truck to get to me. I have since had to sell my car, since I lost my job for a no call no show as I did not get a proper phone call. They cost me an $18 an hour job. I had worked a 12 hour shift and the jail did not even feed me. I get no food stamps or government support, but I asked the judge today for a public defender and she told me to hire a lawyer. They ask everyone that goes in front of the judge if they have a job. She asked me and I told her I did until they caused me to lose it. She shrugged her shoulders as if she did not care. When is there going to be justice for me? Mr Poag lies and doesn’t get charged with anything. I tell the truth and I get laid to waste. Vanderburgh county, you are looking like a bunch of idiots. I might just go to trial without a lawyer and have you do what you will because you all seem to do whatever you want anyway. That is just fine. I am in talks about filing a civil suit against you for not charging the instegater and aggressor in this situation, as well as costing me a job for not being able to call in because you gave me no phone call and you didn’t feed me. The only time I was in front of him was after he turned into Stadium 16, trying to get me to follow him, and I kept on driving to fifth third which was my original destination. I won’t spend any more of my money in Evansville. You guys seem to persecute the ones doing their best and give hand outs to the ones doing their worst.
