Peter Gets Second Win, Eagles Compete at Knight Classic

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Track & Field picked up 12 top-10 finishes, including seven top-fives at the Bellarmine Knight Classic Saturday, hosted by Bellarmine University.

Senior Cathryn Peter (Tell City, Indiana) picked up her second win of the season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase finishing in 11 minutes, 16.66 seconds. Senior Christina Kropid (Springfield, Illinois) ran her best time of the season placing third in the event, finishing in 11:50.13.

Four Screaming Eagles finished in the top-10 of the 1,500-meters, led by sophomore Allison Rollins (Evansville, Indiana) who finished fourth with a time of 4:49.75. Her finish is the top time for a USI runner during the outdoor season. Junior Kate Duty (Owensboro, Kentucky) sophomore Kate Henrickson (Boonville, Indiana), and sophomore Micalah Booher (Pendleton, Indiana) swept spots eight through ten in the event.

Junior Allyson Watson (East Peoria, Illinois) and freshman Ashley Lawhorn (Frankfort, Kentucky) both earned top-five finishes in the 5,000-meters, placing second and fourth respectively. Watson was runner-up with a time of 19:38.90, while Lawhorn finished in 19:48.29.

Moving into the field events, sophomore Hilary Paxson (Liberty Center, Indiana) earned two top-10 finishes, placing fifth in the hammer throw and 10th in the shot put. Paxson reached 136 feet, three inches with her first toss in the hammer, recording a season-best distance. The sophomore’s throw in the shot put went 21’09.50″.

In the long jump, two Eagles placed in the top ten, highlighted by senior Jenna Martin finishing fifth and clearing 16’06.50″. Junior Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) cleared 15’07.50″ to finish seventh in the event.

Competing at the Little State Championships hosted by Taylor University, three Eagles placed in the top-15 of the 10,000-meters. Freshman Ellie Tjelmeland (Springfield, Illinois) was the top finishing USI runner placing 10th, finishing in 41:23.74. Sophomore Miranda Coats (Sellersburg, Indiana) and junior Olivia Kelley (Columbus, Indiana) placed 11th and 12th with times of 42:58.20 and 43:05.24, respectively.

The Eagles return to action next weekend for their final tune-up before the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships. USI will head to Hillsdale, Michigan, for the Hillsdale “Gina” Relays April 27-28 with the GLVC Championships taking place a week later, May 5-7.
