Tennessee painter Mary Laube to display work at USI’s New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art

0

The University of Southern Indiana’s New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA) is proud to present Parallel to the Earth, featuring paintings by Tennessee artist Mary Laube.

Parallel to the Earth runs from Saturday, August 12 to Saturday, September 16, opening with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 12 in conjunction with New Harmony Second Saturdays. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Laube and other Korean Americans often experienced otherness as they gained knowledge of their Asian heritage through bits and pieces while being socialized in predominantly white communities. Her work transforms the concept of identity in the diaspora. She sees her paintings as objects—containers that store memory and desire, exercising the right to deny interpretive aid. She explores the dynamics of individual identity juxtaposed with broader collective formations of culture. Laube’s art practice looks at museum artifacts, architecture, and land related to historic preservation, and she reimagines these objects as paintings, which, in turn, become artifacts of displacement, reunion, decolonization, memorial and myth.

In Parallel to the Earth, we see idealized or romanticized versions of mundane objects. These objects are flattened but dimensional. The use of light and shadows allude to things happening in the periphery. Often, Laube’s paintings become a way to converse with ancestors by use of metaphors from Korean Shamanism. Her paintings are both a vestige of the past as well as a repertoire of the present, a form of storytelling capable of change.

Laube, who was born in Seoul, Korea, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Illinois State University and a master’s in fine arts from the University of Iowa.

Past exhibitions include the Knoxville Museum of Art, Ortega y Gasset Projects in New York; VCU Qatar, Doha; Monaco, Missouri; The Spring Break Art Show, New York; and Coop Gallery, Tennessee. Artist residencies include Yaddo, Wassaic Project; the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; Vermont Studio Center; and Stiwdeo Maelor in Corris, Wales. Past publications include Art Maze Mag, Maake Magazine and New American Paintings. In 2019, Laube received the Contemporary Visual Art Bronze Award from AHL Foundation. She is a co-founder of the Warp Whistle Project, a collaborative duo with composer Paul Schuette. Together, they make work merging kinetic stage sets with musical performances.

The NHGCA at the University of Southern Indiana promotes discourse about, and access to, contemporary art in the southern Indiana region. The NHGCA is a proud outreach partner of the University of Southern Indiana.

This exhibition is made possible in part by Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts.

BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY LIVE AT THE VICTORY THEATRE SEPTEMBER 24

0

TICKETS GO ON SALE FRIDAY, AUGUST 11,2023

Evansville, IN– April, 2023, marks the 30 year anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene. Since its formation in the early nineties in Ventura, California, the band has toured virtually nonstop, performing on average over 150 shows a year, and has produced a sizable catalog of recorded music, with sales of over 2 million albums to date. Early on, during their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in
Los Angeles, they reminded the world, in the midst of the grunge era no less, that it was still cool to swing. The band, co-founded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren, was at the forefront of the swing revival of that time, blending a vibrant fusion of the classic American sounds of jazz, swing, and dixieland, with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s all original core line-up includes Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals), Glen “The Kid” Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet) and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger). Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s efforts to promote and revitalize swing music have taken shape as much more than a simple tribute. Taking inspiration from the creators of this uniquely American art form, the band’s original horn-infused music and legendary high-energy show introduces the genre to a new and younger generation while remaining cognizant and respectful of the music’s rich legacy. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy first phase of stardom featured an appearance in the 1996 indie film Swingers, a movie that not only launched the careers of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, but introduced Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to an audience beyond their Los Angeles base. The band's music has appeared in countless films and television shows, including The Wild, Despicable Me, Phineas & Ferb, Friends, Third Rock From The Sun,
Ally McBeal, and So You Think You Can Dance. They have appeared live on Dancing With The Stars, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, NBC’s Christmas in Rockefeller Center, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a remarkable seven appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show. The band has also appeared as special guests with many of the country’s most distinguished symphony orchestras, and has performed for three U.S. Presidents. After 30 years, 11 records, over 3000 live shows, and countless appearances in film and television, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is showing no signs of slowing down, and is looking forward to sharing its music with new and old fans alike, in 2023.

UE Women’s Basketball adds Tené Smith to 2023-24 class

Smith joins the Purple Aces to begin her collegiate career

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells has announced the signing of freshman point guard/shooting guard Tené McFarquhar-Smith for the upcoming women’s basketball season.
“I am thrilled to welcome Tené to Evansville!” says Scherr-Wells. “Her athleticism and ability to play the point with pace fills a need we have in our program. We love the way she leads on the floor and her basketball IQ. She makes good decisions in pick and roll action and can finish at the rim. She is a very capable shooter and will keep the defense honest with her ability to knock down shots.
“What sold me on Tené was her character, work ethic, and personality. She and I connected instantly which is very important between a point guard and her head coach. I know Tené will be a great ambassador for Evansville on and off the court!”
Smith joins the Purple Aces with a wealth of experience on both the local and national stage in Canada. A Brampton, Ontario native, she spent the past year playing for the Kings Christian Collegiate women’s basketball team. With the King’s, Smith averaged shooting totals in the double-digits, including a career best 17-point performance against Crestwood Preparatory College.
“With a welcoming coaching staff, an intimate campus, and a playing style that fits me like a glove, basketball at the University of Evansville is more than a game but a pursuit of passion, which is why I’m ecstatic to start my journey at UE!,” Smith says of her signing.
Smith played club basketball with the Brampton Lady Warriors. During the regular season, the Lady Warriors had a perfect record of 57-0 under Head Coach Keith Johnson. Smith was also a member of Team Canada for the Jr. NBA Global Tournament. With the Canadian Jr. NBA team, she participated in the tournament finals and was recognized as an International Champion and a World Champion Silver Medalist.
Along with her involvement in the Jr. NBA program, Smith was a member of Team Ontario with Canada Basketball. She was named a Canada Basketball Targeted Athlete, a program that identities top Canadian athletes that receive additional training and development opportunities. She also played with Canada Elite on the Under Armour Circuit.
Away from the court. Smith enjoys reading and discovering new R&B music. She will be majoring in psychology during her four years in Evansville.

USI Women’s Soccer alum Mia Daly first to sign pro in program history

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Former University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer defender Mia Rose Daly (Haiku, Hawaii) has signed a professional contract to play for Keynsham Town L.F.C. of the FA Women’s National League in England. The club is in Tier 4 and in Division One South West. Daly is the first player to sign professionally in USI Women’s Soccer history.

The club is in Keynsham, England, which is in the southwest portion of England close to Bristol and Bath and not too far from Wales.

Daly and Keynsham Town L.F.C. kicked off the preseason on Sunday with a 2-0 win. Daly started and played all 90 minutes at outside left back. The preseason will continue until the start of the regular season in a couple of weeks on August 20.

“Mia is fulfilling her dream of playing professional soccer,” USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein said. “Since she was a youth player in Hawaii, her dream was to play professionally in England and now she has realized her dream.”

Daly was a graduate transfer to USI ahead of the 2022 season. She started all 16 matches she appeared in for the Screaming Eagles, playing a total of 1,396 minutes and every minute in 12 matches last season.

Daly helped lead USI’s defense to seven shutouts and 0.82 goals against average, both second-best in the Ohio Valley Conference. Offensively, Daly recorded three shots and scored her only goal of the season in Southern Indiana’s first-round match against Lindenwood University in the OVC Championship Tournament.

The Haiku, Hawaii native came to USI after starting her collegiate career at Long Island University before finishing her undergrad at St. Francis College (N.Y.).

For her entire collegiate career, Daly started 73 of 77 matches appeared in, playing over 6,337 total minutes with two career goals scored.

Daly grew up in Hawaii playing club soccer with Po’okela Soccer Club, along with Rush Hawaii where she was a member of the state championship teams in 2017 and 2018.

Last January, Daly registered for the National Women’s Soccer League Draft, stepping into the world of professional soccer.

“We are so proud of Mia and excited to watch her professional career,” Schoenstein added.

VUVB hitter Malgorzata Banasiak signs with Florida Memorial University

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – VUVB sophomore hitter Malgorzata Banasiak signed her letter of intent to play next season at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens.

“I decided to sign with FMU mainly because of the professionalism of the coach, who from the very beginning presented me with the main goals for next season and the training plan, which is a very important element of preparing players for the new season,” Banasiak said. “During our conversations, I had the opportunity to see the campus through the camera on the phone. The school also offers courses related to biology, which was just another point that convinced me to continue my college education at Florida Memorial University.”

“Hitting on the right side, or the opposite side is a really challenging position,” VUVB Head Coach Gary Sien said. “Because, if you are right-handed, coming behind the setter that’s your off side. One of the things that I always liked about ‘Gosia’ is that if you put the ball up anywhere around the front row area, she’s going to take a swing. One of the things we like to do with our left front or right front is run them in the middle to hit and she did that extremely well. She was also able to run some slides last year, so she’s got quite a bit of range and I think that’s one part of her game that we really developed.”

“As a blocker, she puts up a really big block,” Sien added. “That’s something that really comes out on film more than in the stats sheet. Because she puts up such a big block, most of the hitters tried to avoid her and you really have to look at how many digs our left back would get. Usually it was quite a bit because teams were trying to hit away from her. Even though it wasn’t always in the stats, she did a wonderful job of taking the line shot away from opposing hitters.”

Banasiak had a strong sophomore season last year for the Trailblazers, finishing with 157 kills and 62 blocks, helping VU to a 29-9 record last season and a 12-0 record again Region 24 opponents.

Banasiak closed out her Vincennes career with 245 kills and 98 blocks, finishing with two-year career record of 51-13 and 24-0 against Region 24 opponents as she helped the Blazers capture back-to-back Region 24 Championships.

“I think the memory that sticks with me the most was winning the Region 24 Championship two years in a row,” Banasiak added. “Winning as a freshman was an indescribable experience, but defending the title again last year just reassured me that our hard work was not in vain and together as a team, we were able to accomplish many things. I am happy that I could be a part of such a team.”

Banasiak is the final member of last year’s sophomore class to announce their future plans with Lara Gomes de Castro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Josephine Mulligan (Saint John, Ind.) signing to play at Union College and Keiser University respectively, along with Hannah Graber (Montgomery, Ind.) and Kaley Roush (Shoals, Ind.) who will be returning to VU this fall to continue their education in VU’s nursing program.

“Really all five sophomores could have kept playing somewhere if they wanted to,” Sien said. “What more can we say about this group? I think the best way to put it is, they checked every box, in terms of being leaders, filling different positions on the team, being here two years and winning two Region Championships. They are pretty serious about what they want to do with their lives. They all want to continue their education, which to me, is the epitome of a successful class. Having them for years one and two and then they already have years three and four planned, to me, that’s the greatest success.”

“They will definitely contribute to whatever community they live in,” Sien added. “They will contribute to their jobs. That’s a successful class and as coaches we all hope that we can have a class like that every year. Where every single person has a goal in their mind and they not only pursuing it, but they are not going to give up until they reach that end goal.”

“Vincennes University made it very easy for me to adapt to a new situation as an international student,” Banasiak said. “Starting from the welcome by professors who, with their 100-percent commitment, made it easy for me to understand every material of the classes and not have any overdue assignments, especially during the season. This is very important, especially when you are so far from home.”

“The greatest support for me was Professor Emily Yetka, who from the very beginning made sure that every international student felt at home at VU,” Banasiak added. “I am incredibly grateful to her for her support and how much I could learn from her.”

“On the athletic side, I feel that Coach Gary Sien, from my first year until the very end of my second season, was very supportive and understanding,” Banasiak said. “He always did his best to pass on his volleyball knowledge to us in the best possible way so that we could use it in the future. Throughout my years of playing volleyball, I have had the experience of training with various coaches and each of them passes on their part of knowledge to the players. A person learns all his life and such knowledge is never enough.”

“Both Coach Gary Sien and Coach Mike Misner gave me many valuable tips resulting from many years of experience,” Banasiak said. “The task of a coach is never easy, it requires hard work and commitment that will pay off in the future. This resulted in winning the Region 24 Championship two year in a row, which only proved the hard work of the entire team. I hope that I will bring all this knowledge and experience to my new team next season, which will allow me to broaden my horizons with new volleyball experiences.”

“These exciting two years have given me great experiences and great friends that I will miss tremendously,” Banasiak added. “Despite the ups and downs, I am extremely happy that I was part of the Trailblazers and that together with this team, I was able to experience every moment of winning and losing. Because in the losing moments, we had to be the greatest motivation and support for each other. It’s hard for me to believe that this was my last season with VU. All I can say is it was a great time with great people. But, it’s time to blaze my trail somewhere else.”

Banasiak is joining a Lions squad that finished last season with a record of 10-11 and 7-8 in Sun Conference play under Head Coach Jazmine Washington.

Florida Memorial University is an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and University) and plays in the NAIA and Sun Conference, the same conference as Josephine Mulligan’s Keiser University. Banasiak will also play for the Lions’ Beach Volleyball team next season as well.

“For Joie and Gosia to play against each other next year, how cool is that?” Sien said. “You’ve got two people who grew up on opposite sides of the world, played two years together here and now they will travel to another region of the country going to school and playing volleyball and competing against each other. I’ve had that happen before more locally, but for them to go that far away and still see each other on the court, how cool is that?”

“I am very happy for Gosia to have this opportunity at FMU,” Sien added. “We were looking at different places that she might be interested in going to and Florida Memorial happened to be one of the schools that we contacted and they had an opportunity for her both financially and Coach Washington really wanted to sign her. This opportunity came on kind of late and she and I both believe that it was just meant to be for her to go play at FMU. Florida Memorial is also the only HBCU in the country that offers beach volleyball. FMU is a very strong academic school for what she wants to study, so it’s a great opportunity that she has both academically and athletically.”

The Vincennes University Athletic Department would like to congratulate Malgorzata Banasiak on her signing with Florida Memorial University and wishes her good luck next season.
