Oliver’s Heroes K-9 Charity

A newly formed charity created by a local restaurateur and members of the Sheriff’s Office will hold their inaugural golf scramble this Friday, October 27, 2023.

Oliver’s Heroes was formed by Mr. Joe Sells, owner of Rounder’s Too in Daylight, Indiana. The charity directly benefits retired K-9s, paying for their veterinarian care and nutritional needs.

The Sheriff’s Office has no funding to support K-9s once they retire and separate from the agency. Oliver’s Heroes ensures these animals that have given so much to our community are properly supported during their remaining years.

Evansville’s Annual Fall Leaf Collection Starts October 30

EVANSVILLE, IND. – Starting October 30, and continuing through December 8, 2023, Evansville residents who pay for trash service with their monthly Evansville Water and Sewer Utility bill can participate in the annual Fall Leaf Collection Program. During this period, eligible residents can place properly bagged leaves next to the curb for pickup by Republic Services on their regular trash collection day.

 How it works

  • Leaves must be contained in biodegradable plastic or paper leaf bags or in containers.
  • Bags must be in manageable, organized piles and placed curbside near the trash and recycling carts.
  • Bags and containers should be at the pickup location before 6 a.m. on the day of your normal trash collection.
  • Bags should be placed at the pickup location on your normal day of trash collection, not days in advance.

Leaves not in biodegradable bags or that do not meet these requirements will not be picked up. If leaves are not in biodegradable bags, residents will be notified and asked to re-bag leaves properly for pick-up the following week. If residents feel they have complied with the requirements but their leaves were not picked up, they should call Republic Services at 812-424-3345 within two days after their regular trash collection day.

 Who is not eligible

Apartment complexes, mobile home communities, business and commercial customers, and Utility customers who live outside the City of Evansville are not eligible. The service is for City residents only who pay for trash and recycling service with their monthly water and sewer bill.

 Heavy Trash

Heavy trash pickups will not be scheduled during the Fall Leaf Collection Program. Heavy trash pickups will resume on Monday, December 11, 2023.

Sobieralski’s stellar performance leads to OVC weekly honor

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Junior setter Carly Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Indiana) was named Ohio Valley Conference Setter of the Week for the second time this season after her historic performance last weekend for University of Southern Indiana Volleyball.
 
The Screaming Eagles went 1-1 in their weekend slate after defeating Western Illinois, 3-1, on Friday then falling to the Leathernecks, 3-2, on Saturday. The Eagles racked up 144 kills with a stellar 0.285 hitting percentage to pair with 13 aces, 21 blocks, and 178 digs. USI goes into the week in a tie for fifth in the OVC standings with a 6-6 conference record.
 
Friday’s contest resulted in a career-high 65 assists for the Indianapolis native to pair with 11 digs, four blocks, and three aces. On Saturday, Sobieralski put up 62 assists and 22 digs which marks the first time since Stephanie Wilson in 2005 that a USI setter has earned at least 60 assists and 20 digs in a match. She also was the first player in the OVC to secure 60+ assists in a single conference match and did it in back-to-back games. In the last two matches, Sobieralski totaled a league-leading 127 assists with over 14 assists per set and led the conference setters in digs and aces with 33 and four, respectively.
 
The Eagles, who are 10-13 overall, are on their bye week and will return to action next weekend when USI hosts Tennessee Tech University in a crucial homestand. There will be free postgame poster signings after Friday’s match while Saturday’s match will be Senior Day where USI will honor their four seniors. Both matches will have a heavy impact on seeding for the conference tournament in late November.

FSSA announces $25 million grant to address working Hoosiers’ child care needs

Employer-sponsored funds will increase the supply of available childcare, and benefits across the state

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning today announced the Employer-Sponsored Child Care Fund, part of Gov. Eric J. Holcomb’s 2023 Next Level Agenda, to mobilize employers and communities to create or expand child care offerings that address the needs of working Hoosiers.

“Employers know first-hand the critical needs of their employees, and are best positioned to partner in their communities to create child care solutions that will help build and retain their workforce,” Gov. Holcomb said. “This targeted grant program will boost Indiana’s economy and most importantly empower the state’s youngest learners with the tools they need to be successful in the years to come.”

The $25 million program, a partnership with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, uses a portion of the state’s remaining federal relief funds from the COVID-19 pandemic and is part of the state’s broader efforts to strengthen the early care and education sector, providing support for today’s workforce and investing in tomorrow’s. The program is also supported by the Indiana Manufacturers Association.

Grant funding can be used to support employees’ child care needs in a variety of ways, including sponsoring dependent care assistance plans, providing on-site or near-site child care or offering child care tuition benefits. Grants of up to $750,000 will be awarded. The full list of allowable uses and details can be found here. 

“Families will benefit from more convenient child care options in their communities, giving children the opportunity to learn, grow and develop alongside their peers,” said Courtney Penn, OECOSL director. “This grant will give parents more opportunities to learn, grow and develop in their careers as well.”

To be eligible, employers must be located in Indiana and either a business or corporation employing 20 or more employees, a group of employers with 20 or more employees or a community-based nonprofit applying on behalf of a group of local employers with a combined total of 20 or more employees. Employers must also be willing to contribute 10% of the total amount requested and be able to implement solutions within the first year of the program.

Murder Investigation 2600 blk Mount Vernon Ave.

 On October 22nd, around 3:30 p.m., Evansville Police Officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Mount Vernon Ave. in reference to a death investigation. The reporter found two individuals inside the residence who were deceased. Officers arrived and located the two victims who were beyond help. They were both adult males and their deaths appeared to be suspicious. This is being treated as a Murder Investigation. Detectives with the EPD Adult Investigations Unit and EPD Crime Scene Unit were called to the scene. 

This investigation is still active and at this time, no arrests have been made. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death. The victims’ names and the cause of death will be released at a later date/time. If anyone has information regarding this investigation, please contact the Adult Investigation Unit at (812) 436-7979.

USI Women’s Swim and Dive place sixth in Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate Invite

West Lafayette, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana Women’s Swimming and Diving continued their Indiana road trip in West Lafayette on Saturday competing in the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate Meet at Purdue University. Ten other Indiana schools competed in the event including Anderson University, Ball State University, Bethel University, Franklin College, Indiana Wesleyan, IUPUI, Purdue University, USI, Rose-Hulman, and Butler University. The Screaming Eagles finished sixth among the ten schools.

The Eagles came out a little slow, but were kick started by Freshman Caiya Cooper (LaPorte, Indiana) with a solid 200 yard freestyle time (1:58.31). Sophomore Sarah-Catherine Dawson (Prospect, Kentucky) nearly broke her own school record that she set on Friday night posting an impressive 100 yard butterfly time (58.90).

Freshman Hayden Shurtz (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) went on a tear Saturday dazzling in the 100 yard individual medley breaking a school record (1:01.92). Shurtz almost shattered her own record from Friday’s meet in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.66).

Freshman Maranda Uttke (Grafton, Wisconsin) tallied 195.00 points in the three-meter dive event.
