he Southern Indiana Review (SIR), University of Southern Indiana’s nationally recognized literary journal, will celebrate the release of its latest issue with guest speakers from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, January 17 in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries. The event is open to the public at no charge.
The speakers in order of appearance will be:
SIR presents a cross-section of emerging and established artists and writers whose work is both regional and national in scope and degree of recognition. With the support of the Indiana Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts, SIR is published in October and May by USI and sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts.

Vanderburgh Co. receives over $800K for public safety BY STATE RERPERSENTIVE WENDY MCNAMARA Vanderburgh County and Evansville recently received over $800,000 combined to boost local public safety efforts, including the creation of the new Crime Gun Intelligence Center. The center’s purpose is to develop leads to quickly identify unlawfully used firearms and their sources, and to prosecute violent criminals. Plans for the center include an expansion of an existing joint task force made up of the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office, the Evansville Police Department and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office. Evansville also received over $100,000 through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, which can support a broad range of activities like breaking the cycle of substance use and crime, combating violence, holding offenders accountable, and reinforcing law enforcement efforts. |

In total, Indiana received $62.9 million from the U.S. Department of Justice to support public safety efforts. Over 40 state and local agencies will receive portions of the funding to expand youth violence intervention efforts, grow mentoring programs for youth and re-entry services, and fight substance abuse in our state.Grant awards include: • Vanderburgh County, $698,805 to create a Crime Gun Intelligence Center; FOOTNOTE:  As chair of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, I’m working daily with various stakeholders like police, prosecutors and victim advocates to ensure Indiana has resources to continue protecting Hoosiers.

On Thursday, the Statehouse Democrats of both chambers held a press conference to share their joint priorities for the 2024 legislative session.
“We wanted to make sure everyone knows that the Indiana Statehouse Democratic Party are on the same page, and we really want to help all Hoosiers by pushing for the same agenda,†Sen. Greg Taylor, D-Indianapolis, said.
“Whether you live in a rural, suburban or urban area, Indiana is just too expensive to be a Hoosier,†he said. “It’s not because Hoosiers aren’t working hard enough or making poor financial decisions; it’s because one-party Republican rule has never worked in our Hoosier citizens’ best interest.â€
Statehouse Democrats’ priorities include:
Increasing access to affordable, high-quality child care. Sen. Shelli Yoder, D-Bloomington, said, “Currently, providers are only able to accommodate about 41% of the half-million children who need child care, meaning that 600,000 parents are left with no options.â€
Providing all homeowners with property tax relief via a $250 property tax credit funded by surplus state dollars.
Capping prescription drug costs: for example, insulin at $35 and albuterol at $55.
Solving the third-grade reading proficiency crisis through individualized, student-focused and non-punitive interventions. “That way their future opportunities are multiplied, not diminished,†said GiaQuinta.
Allowing citizen-led ballot referendums to take place in Indiana.
“Today is not the last day you will hear Statehouse Democrats talking about these key issues,†GiaQuinta said. “We intend to force as many votes as possible throughout the session, so the Statehouse Republicans have a lot of chances to say yes to Hoosiers and no to wealthy special interests.â€

The University of Southern Indiana Romain College of Business will present “Markets, Building Wealth as a Student and Careers in Investing†with Ross Mayfield, Baird Private Wealth Management Investment Strategist, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 13. The presentation will take place in the Business and Engineering Center, BE0035, and is open to the public at no charge. Mayfield also spoke with Romain College of Business students in February 2023.
Mayfield is a chartered financial analyst (CFA) professional who works closely with financial advisors to educate clients about the economy and markets. In addition, Mayfield creates investment strategy content aimed at helping clients achieve long-term financial goals. He authors investment research for advisors and clients focused on financial markets, the economy and the benefits of long-term investing. He frequently appears in print, television and online media to discuss markets and investing implications.
Prior to Baird, Mayfield was an Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) Analyst and a Research Analyst at Hilliard Lyons, which was acquired by Baird in 2019. In these roles, he covered a broad range of subjects from investment product analysis to individual equity research. A Louisville, Kentucky, native, Mayfield serves as President on the Board of the CFA Society of Louisville. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Kentucky and earned his MBA from the University of Louisville.
INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb urges interested Hoosiers to apply for the prestigious 2024-2025 Governor’s Fellowship.
The Governor’s Fellowship is highly selective and provides a unique experience in Indiana state government by placing fellows in various state agencies on a rotating basis throughout the year.
The program is open to college graduates who receive their bachelor’s degrees in either summer or fall of 2023 or spring of 2024. Fellows are paid, full-time employees who participate in the day-to-day activities of state government.
Many Governor’s Fellow participants have gone on to successful careers in both the public and private sectors — with some serving at the highest levels of local, state and federal government.
The application and submission guidelines can be found online at www.in.gov/gov/fellowship.htm. To be eligible for consideration, the application and all supporting materials must be postmarked or submitted via email by January 31, 2024.

BRIDGE (Building Respect & Integrity in Diverse Greater Evansville) encourages every faith community to emphasize their faith’s teaching on racial equity the week of January 29 – February 4 to motivate and inspire their members to make the Evansville region a place where all races, ethnicities, and cultures feel a sense of belonging. The Racial Justice Faith Week will help mark Black History Month.
Faith leaders can focus on race and justice in the message during worship activities. Faith communities may also use racial justice as their theme for other activities, such as prayer groups or Sunday School.
As part of the Racial Justice Faith Week, the University of Evansville will sponsor an interfaith Community Prayer Service at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 4. The service will be held in Neu Chapel on the campus of UE, just off South Rotherwood Avenue in Evansville. The public is invited for music, prayer, and reflection for justice. (Facebook event page)
