Second-half run lifts Salukis to 65-53 win

Aces look to rebound on Wednesday

 

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville men’s basketball team held a 26-24 halftime lead, but an 11-0 run by Southern Illinois in the second half keyed a 65-53 win on Sunday at the Ford Center.

Ben Humrichous led the Purple Aces with 11 points and 7 rebounds while Antonio Thomas recorded 10 points on a 4-for-5 shooting effort.  Tanner Cuff scored nine points.  Troy D’Amico led SIU with 17 points.

Yacine Toumi found Antonio Thomas cutting to the basket for the first score of the game.  UE hit its first three shots to take a 6-3 lead before five in a row from SIU saw them take their first lead at 8-6.  Converting five shots in a row, the Salukis opened a 14-8 edge before Chuck Bailey III ended the stretch with a mid-range jumper.

After missing five in a row, the Salukis went on a drought, missing nine in a row as they did not record a field goal for over eight minutes.  Evansville made its way back as Cam Haffner drained a 3-pointer to get UE within one at 14-13.  At the 6:58 mark, Toumi put the Aces back in front at 17-15.

SIU regained a 24-21 edge inside the 3-minute mark before Evansville reeled off the final five tallies to take a 26-24 lead into the break.  Antonio Thomas has the final five points for UE as they rallied back in front.

Back-and-forth action continued in the second half.  Southern Illinois took a 29-28 edge in the first minute while Ben Humrichous countered with a 3-point play to put his team in front at 30-29.  A turning point came with the score tied at 35-35 inside of 16 minutes remaining.  SIU posted 11 in a row to take their largest advantage of the day.

Inside of the 12-minute mark, Humrichous ended the SIU run to get back within single digits.  Tanner Cuff and Bailey each scored as part of an 11-2 run that made it a 48-46 game.  Southern Illinois retook control as they pushed the lead back to double figures at 60-50 inside the final minutes.  Gage Bobe hit a 3-pointer two minutes remaining to get his team within seven, but SIU was able to fend off the challenge to finish with the 65-53 win.

Hitting 21 out of 51 attempts, SIU shot 41.2% while holding the Aces to 37.5%.  The Salukis also finished with a 34-32 rebounding advantage.

Tuesday night will mark Senior Night for UE as they host Indiana State in a 7 p.m. game.

Men’s Swim and Dive broke 12 school records at the conference championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Swimming and Diving squad tackled the four-day Summit League Championships this week in Minneapolis, Minnesota with conference implications on the line. USI broke 12 school records this weekend and placed seventh among the highly competitive field.
 
The inaugural 2022-2023 season ended with both squads placing last place at the Summit League Championships. USI has made tremendous strides in year two of the program’s existence putting together an impressive showing in Minneapolis.
 
Day 1
Wednesday featured the one-meter dive and the two relay events. The Eagles representative for 200 yard medley freestyle relay featured sophomore Garrett Crist (Bargersville, Indiana), freshman Demarkus Darensbourg (Overland Park, Kansas), freshman Cole Baker (Springville, Indiana), and Gabriel Groves (New Carlisle, Indiana) who broke the school record (1:31.40).
 
The Eagles swimmers went two for two breaking records as 800 yard freestyle relay of freshman Sam Smith (Trafalgar, Indiana), sophomore Jack Hannon (Lowell, Indiana), sophomore Creed Loy (Knoxville, Tennessee), and sophomore Connor Harden (Centennial, Colorado) also etched their names in history (6:57.28).
 
USI missed the A-finals in the one-meter event. However, sophomore Lane Pollock (Boonville, Indiana) scored an impressive 250.25. Senior Donnevun Banks (Evansville, Indiana) had a big weekend right behind Pollock with a score of 250.15.
 
Day 2
The men finished day two with three standout performances in freestyle events that all broke school records. Smith got the Eagles going making the finals and recording a blazing 500 yard performance (4:35.12) in the B final. Baker continued to get better as the season progressed with an impressive 50 yard freestyle time (20.79).
 
Moreover, he recorded an even quicker 50 yard freestyle time as the first leg of 200 yard freestyle relay (20.71). The relay team of Baker, Crist, Smith, and Groves teamed up for an epic 200 yard freestyle finish (1:23.42). The Eagles finished day two in seventh within striking distance of Eastern Illinois University and ahead of St. Thomas University.
 
Day 3
Day three brought two school records, 16 different Eagles recording season bests, and the first diver in program history to reach the Summit League A-Finalist.
 
Freshman Camden Richardson (Spring Hill, Tennessee), sophomore Colton Agdeppa (Redding, California), Darensbourg, and Baker snatched the school record in the 400 yard medley relay (3:23.92). Richardson wasn’t done there as the freshman broke another record in the 100 yard backstroke (50.75).
 
Banks had a monster night under the bright lights recording a finals score of 266.35 in the three meter diving event. This score earned Banks a spot on the podium at seventh place.
 
Day 4
The final day came, and the freshman Smith did something no other Eagles swimmer has done at the Summit League championships, qualify as a A-Finalist in the 200 yard butterfly (1:50.35). He later outdid himself with a quicker time (1:49.92).
 
Four additional Eagle records were set in the 1650 yard freestyle event from freshman Alek Bandy (Salem, Illinois) (16:47.97), sophomore Garrett Crist (Bargersville, Indiana) in the 200 yard backstroke (1:52.52), and Baker in the 100 yard freestyle (45.56).
 
The Eagles final relay standout record was Baker, Darensbourg, Smith, and Groves in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:05.05).

Energy Assistance Program

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program was created to assist low-income households primarily with their heating and utility costs. LIHEAP also supports weatherization programs for improving long-term energy efficiency and reducing heating-associated costs for low-income families.

To qualify for the program, households must make 60% or less of the state median income in the most recent three months. The income qualifications breakdown are represented in the above image.

The Moratorium is the period of time a regulated utility company may not turn off residential utility service to any customer who is eligible for and who has applied for the Energy Assistance Program. In 2024, Moratorium protection expires on March 15.

Softball completes weekend trip to Louisiana

Aces drop finale to UL Monroe

 

MONROE, La. – Sunday’s finale of the Best on the Bayou Tournament saw the University of Evansville softball team drop a 9-1 contest to UL Monroe.

UL Monroe stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the first but rebounded with two runs in the second.  Evansville cut the deficit in half with some 2-out magic with Hannah Hood doubling to center before Keghan Pye brought her home after reaching on an error.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jacelyn Buck led off with a home run to center while Meagan Brown hit a bases clearing triple to highlight a 5-run inning that extended the lead to 7-1.  One inning later, the Warhawks completed the scoring as they tacked on two more runs while stranding the bases loaded.

As a team, ULM recorded nine hits while the Purple Aces were held to one hit.  Mikayla Jolly took the loss as she allowed seven runs in 3 1/3 innings.  Victoria Abrams earned the win, allowing one run in 4 1/3 frames.

Evansville will be in Charleston, S.C. next weekend for the Low Country Classic.
