The presentation will recognize January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month and is open to the public at no charge.

The presentation will teach attendees how to define human trafficking, recognize different forms of human trafficking and exploitation, understand the scope of the problem in Indiana and identify one’s active role in anti-trafficking efforts.

“We hope this presentation will help attendees understand what this issue looks like in Indiana,” says Catherine Champagne, Assistant Program Director for Student Wellness. “They will learn about resources that exist at the local level to prevent human trafficking.”

The presentation is organized by the USI Sexual Assault and Gender Violence Prevention Group in collaboration with the Indiana Trafficking Victims Assistance Program and Southwest Indiana Regional Coalition Against Trafficking.

JURY FINDS MAN GUILTY OF  ATTEMPTED MURDER ON POLICE OFFICERS

JANUARY 22, 2024

Evansville, IN – Prosecutor Diana Moers announces that on January 17, 2024, a jury, after less than 60 minutes of deliberation, found Kody Brian Schaum guilty as charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, both Level 1 Felonies; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony; and Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony.

On May 9, 2023, Evansville Police Department officers made contact with Schaum who had an active felony warrant. As officers approached in their squad cars, Schaum was standing at the rear of a vehicle with an open hatch. In an incident that lasted seconds, officers yelled at Schaum to put his hands up. Schaum initially complied with orders but then then frantically dropped his hands to tug at his waistband while reaching behind his back for a handgun that was in the vehicle. Schaum was yelling expletives at the officers and refusing to obey the officer’s orders to show his hands. Finally, Schaum produced his handgun and racked the handgun’s slide, which meant a live round was chambered—thus taking a substantial step in shooting the officers. Officers then fired their duty weapons at Schaum who suffered non-fatal injuries and was taken into custody.

Prosecutor Moers congratulated her Deputy Prosecutors Neil Thomas and Jeremy Kemper who expertly handled the trial. The prosecution presented body camera footage from the incident, dash camera footage, and officer testimony.

Moers stated: “This case serves as a particularly forceful reminder that those who attempt to shoot at police officers will be held accountable. The jury in this case was able to watch the body camera and dash camera footage which proved immensely helpful to show how chaotic the scene was that day. The jury, after watching the footage, took less than an hour to convict.”

Moers went on to explain: “While we can watch from the comfort of the courtroom, we can never fully grasp what the officers are experiencing in a life-threatening scenario. The Defendant was intent on non-compliance and chaos that day and we are very lucky both officers went home to their families and no innocent bystanders were harmed. Schaum will pay a serious price for his choices that day.”

Prosecutor Moers extended her thanks to Evansville Police Officers Taz Cassidy, Jaylan Hyneman, Ben Gentry, Don Vonderscher, and Dave Smith. Moers also thanked her staff who assisted with the trial, including Investigators Tony Carden and Jon Carter, and legal assistants Jen Savage, Kiersten Butler, and Kennadi Hagan.

Sentencing is scheduled for January 25, 2024, in front of Judge David D. Kiely of the Vanderburgh County Circuit Court. The Defendant could receive a sentence of up to 80 years.

USI DMS Program offers free pregnancy ultrasounds

0

The USI Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program is offering non-diagnostic ultrasounds to expectant mothers 22-34 weeks pregnant on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons through April 2024. Students will be practicing assigned images under the direction of experienced faculty members.

“This unique collaboration provides the opportunity for students to enhance their practical skills before starting their clinical rotations,” said Jordan Thomason, DMS Instructor and Clinical Coordinator. “With our state-of-the-art lab and 3D probes, students can practice various scanning techniques and protocols with direct patient interaction under the guidance of an instructor.”

Sam Fiducci, who works at USI as a Multimedia Learning Designer in Online Learning, was an ultrasound volunteer three times last semester: twice for regular scans and then she returned to help during finals week with the exam portion of the class.

“I was so excited to see that USI offered free ultrasounds to allow the DMS students to practice on actual patients. Most parents-to-be don’t get a ton of ultrasounds, so any extras are truly amazing,” she says. “All the students were so excited each time I went in and genuinely thrilled to have the opportunity to learn and see a live baby on screen. They asked questions to get to know me and seemed to enjoy hearing about my experience with pregnancy. It was so unique and made me feel like I was also helping the USI community. I highly recommend anyone expecting to sign up!”

No. 3 Trailblazers fall for first time in Region 24 play at Olney Central

0

OLNEY, Ill. – The No. 3-ranked Vincennes University Trailblazers hit the road Saturday night for another tough Region 24 road matchup, this time coming against the Blue Knights of Olney Central College.

VU looked to have gained control over this game in the first half and was able to ride the momentum swings of the second half to hold a late 70-63 lead before a string of miscues allowed the Blue Knights to come away with the 73-72 victory.

Vincennes looked to take control of the game early, scoring the first four points of the contest Saturday night, before trading baskets with the Blue Knights.

Olney Central then looked to gain momentum with an 8-0 scoring run to take a 19-12 lead midway through the first half.

VU would answer back with a 12-1 scoring run to take a 24-20 lead. The Trailblazers would grow this lead to eight late in the first half before Olney used a 6-0 scoring run to cut the VU lead down to just one.

The Trailblazers would get the final basket of the opening half of play however, heading into the locker room holding a 38-35 lead over Olney Central.

Vincennes would again look to take control of the game early in the second half, quickly growing their lead to seven points at 52-45.

Olney Central would cut the lead down to just a single point again but looked to be unable to fully erase the VU lead.

After the Trailblazers had grown their lead back to seven with just under three minutes to play, the Blue Knights took advantage of some VU missed box outs and were able to string together four unanswered, all at the free throw line to cut the VU lead down to three.

After a VU bucket looked to calm things down, the Blue Knights would score six unanswered including hitting two big free throws to take the lead with 30 seconds remaining.

Vincennes still had plenty of time to set up a play and did so, getting a good look at the basket in the paint and a put back opportunity at the buzzer that both unfortunately rattled out as the Blue Knights came away with the 73-72 victory over the Blazers.

VU was led offensively Saturday night by another big scoring game by freshman Lebron Thomas (Bishopville, S.C.) who finished with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Lady Blazers ride high scoring third quarter to seventh straight win

0

OLNEY, Ill. – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers winning streak continues to grow after Saturday night’s 83-73 victory over Olney Central College in Olney, Ill.

The Lady Blazers found themselves tied with the Lady Blue Knights at the halftime break, before coming out and exploding for 35 points in the third quarter to pick up their seventh straight victory and 10th win of the season.

VU got off to a slow start as both teams struggled early to put the ball in the basket. Vincennes was finally able to get on the board first and scored the first five points of the game.

Olney Central then quickly shifted momentum by going on a 10-0 scoring run to take the lead and close out the opening quarter of play holding a 19-15 advantage.

After a strong start to the second quarter for the Lady Blue Knights, the Lady Blazers would answer back with a 9-0 scoring run to take the lead back at 28-26 with just under four minutes remaining before halftime.

Olney would answer with five straight points before VU ended the quarter on a 5-2 scoring run to even the score at 33-33 heading into the locker room break.

The physicality of this Region 24 showdown really took charge in the third quarter, with both teams quickly finding themselves in the bonus and shooting free throws for most of the period.

VU would look to take control of the game with a big 21-2 scoring run to take a 54-42 lead.

The Vincennes lead would continue to grow to 15 before Olney Central hit a layup at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 68-55 heading into the fourth quarter.

Vincennes would continue to ride this momentum and take their largest lead of the night at 74-57 early in the fourth quarter before Olney Central rallied and got the home crowd back into it with 11 unanswered to cut the deficit to 74-68.

The Lady Blue Knights would cut the VU lead down to just four points but were unable to get any closer as VU closed out another strong Region 24 road victory by the final score of 83-73.

The Lady Trailblazers were led offensively by freshman Destinee Hooks (Indianapolis, Ind.) who came off the bench to just miss out on a double-double with 20 points, nine rebounds and a team-high six steals.
