Four USI students receive fully-funded international internships

0

The University of Southern Indiana has awarded four Global Engagement Internships that will allow students to travel to Scotland, Africa, and India this summer. The fully-funded internships, coordinated through the Office of International Programs and Services, will provide the students with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of global issues and challenges that impact the world.

Catherine Carver of Deltona, Florida, a USI history major with a minor in anthropology, has been selected as the recipient of the Global Engagement Internship to the New Lanark World Heritage Site in Scotland May 10 through June 22. New Lanark is a restored 18th century cotton mill village connected to USI’s Historic New Harmony through the life and work of Robert Owen, founder of social experiments at both New Lanark and New Harmony.

Carver will help develop a public search room to support access to New Lanark’s collection of photographs, maps, drawings, and documents. The work will connect the New Lanark collection to the collections housed at USI’s David L. Rice Library and in New Harmony.

Biochemistry major Chelsea Heibel, a junior from Fort Wayne, Indiana, is spending eight weeks in Ghana, May 10 to July 8, with the World Endeavors volunteer program. She will spend up to four weeks in the city of Kumasi, where she is staying with a host family in the city’s suburbs and working in the maternity wing of the local hospital. She has a CNA and the focus of her work there will be with pregnant women and young mothers.

Jordan Whitledge of Evansville, a senior business administration, economics, and political science major and 2011-12 Student Government Association president, will spend six weeks with World Endeavors in Jaipur, the capital and largest city of India’s Rajasthan region, July 6-August 18. While in India, Whitledge expects to work with the homeless and serve as an English tutor.

Brittney Van Laeken of Evansville, a nursing major, is headed to a remote area of India this summer. Her internship is being coordinated through Cross-Cultural Solutions, one of the oldest international volunteer organizations in the region. Her trip, from May 25 to June 4, will take her to the city of Dharamsala in the Himalayas. Since 1959, the city has been an enclave for the Dalai Lama and the exiled Tibetan government. Her work will include a focus on adults with alcohol and substance abuse problems.

University of Evansville Launches Diversity Initiatives

3

This spring, the University of Evansville is taking major steps to improve its diversity strategy: conducting two surveys about diversity on campus and developing a campus-wide supplier diversity program.

One of the core goals of UE’s strategic plan, “Transforming Tomorrow: Our Students, Our University, Our World,” is to model and teach social responsibility in the local and global community. This includes creating and expanding initiatives related to diversity.

To gather concrete data to better inform these efforts, UE is utilizing the Diverse Learning Environments Survey, created by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. The survey captures student perceptions regarding the institutional climate, campus practices as experienced with faculty, staff, and peers, and student learning outcomes.

On March 12, all UE students received a personal e-mail inviting them to take the DLE survey. Each respondent who completes the survey before the April 23 deadline will be entered into a drawing for prizes such as an iPad. In the fall, UE will receive a report of the survey results.

“UE has never undertaken a survey of this kind,” said La Toya Smith, diversity and equity officer and chair of UE’s Institutional Diversity Council. “We look forward to receiving the results, which faculty, administrators, and staff will use to help improve the campus and students’ experience at UE.”

Staff and administrators will also complete a separate survey to evaluate their experiences at work, level of job satisfaction and engagement, experiences with others, and level of cultural competence. In addition, this survey will assess UE staff and administrators’ perceptions of the institutional practices and the campus climate regarding diversity. The survey will begin next week and end in mid-May. Data will be used to create a detailed diversity action plan.

Finally, UE signed a contract with Diverse Business Solutions in January to improve its supplier diversity program. Under this contract, DBS is currently assessing UE’s purchasing behavior, supplier database, current contracts, and purchasing needs. The company will research and report on the diverse supplier capacity within a 50- and 100-mile radius of UE, and make recommendations. In August, DBS will present a comprehensive report to UE.

“We are pleased and honored to have been selected by the University to assist them in this process,” said Jeffrey Rode, the company’s president and CEO. Founded by two supplier diversity executives, Diverse Business Solutions provides an array of products and services to the supplier diversity industry — including supplier diversity program development, diverse certification management and preparation, and diversity expos and events. DBS, a diverse business itself, maintains offices in Evansville and Greenwood, Indiana.

Tupac Comes to Life at Coachella

0

Technology has progressed to the point that Tupac Shakur, a pioneer in the rap music field who was murdered in Vegas 15 years ago gave a posthumous performance at the Coachella Music Festival last weekend in Indio, CA. Joining the image of Tupac on stage was Snoop Dogg who is showing his age when Pac is not.

Life often imitates art and the technology that brought Tupak back to the stage at Coachella may someday allow speeches and instruction to be given in a way that seems real. As bandwidth increases and stages are adapted to holographic media, the Beatles, or a young Bob Dylan may be giving concerts or Professor Einstein may deliver a lecture using this technology.

Unfortunately Tupac used a word that starts with M and ends in cker that offends some people in his after death concert. Those of you who are offended by that word should not watch this video but those who enjoy Pac’s music or are technophiles should check it out. This is the first of many such events brought to you by a Coachella Valley business.

Letter to the Editor: Biased or Negligent Newspapers Killing Journalism

1

By: Bill Hazelip

What happens to a newspaper when the readers are on to it? When the “news” is already old stories and the daily coverage is so biased that even the staff reporters complain of the imbalance, what happens? When a newspaper hides and distorts the real news about the incompetence of the nation’s leaders and the poor shape of the country what happens?

The answer is simple; the people stop taking the paper, and businesses that advertise take their business some place else! This is what is happening to the New York Times. It was not enough for the Times to have 90% of their staff vote one-way or follow the liberal lines of their Eastern journalistic teachings, but they also, had to turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to the news that was happening all around them. Bernie Goldberg, winner of many awards of excellence in journalistic reporting says, “It is no longer just biases; it has now turned into corruption!”

However, the Times is not alone in their distortion of the news. The case of Trayvon Martin is a good example of distorted coverage, and two of the major networks even distorted and lied to the public about the incident. Was Trayvon Martin, a story of National interest or was it the media’s way of covering up the “whispering incident” of Obama to the Russian President? The media was saying to the three hundred million people, in the United States, these whispers to our long-time enemy are not of your concerns. But, the public was restless! We wanted to know more!

So, a new distortion was born! —- A white-skin looking Hispanic kills a young black man, who resembles Barack Obama’s son, — if he had one! The media once again realized that by playing the race card, they could protect their presidential choice. A black minister, who was appearing as a guest on a television show commented, “these killings are happening everyday in America,” and he is correct. But gasoline prices of four dollars a gallon, plus unemployment at a 50 year high and Obama whispering to the Russian, required an immediate media diversion. And the media responded in chorus!

Newspapers, magazines and the network news stations are out-of-date and nearing their end. They believe that they have accomplished their mission with the last presidential election. However, one election does not seal the fate of America, but it could seal the fate of liberal journalism and the TIMES!

IS IT TRUE April 17, 2012

The Mole #??

IS IT TRUE April 17, 2012

IS IT TRUE that on March 24, 2012 the City County Observer concluded collecting the necessary signatures required by the State of Indiana to request a field hearing with respect to the yet to be approved contract between the City of Evansville and Johnson Controls?…that we have not yet received any official notice of the request for a field hearing there has been a document issued that seems to imply that the request is not “necessary”?…that the justification for a field hearing not being necessary is most likely the fact that the project has been sold to the state as a “no cost” contract?…that the reason that the CCO petitioned for the field hearing is because we do not believe the assertion that the Johnson Controls contract will actually deliver the savings sufficient for it to really be a “no cost” contract?…that there will be an evidentiary hearing this Thursday, April 19th in Indianapolis at 9:30 AM in room 222 at 101 West Washington Street?…that written comments to cause #44123 will be accepted at the above address through May 2, 2012 so we encourage our readers who like us have concerns that the City of Evansville has once again rushed to sign a contract with high potential to become a “BILL OF GOODS” to send in their questions and comments?

IS IT TRUE that it was announced yesterday for the first time ever that Pulitzer Prizes were awarded to exclusively online publications?…that a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting was awarded to David Wood of the Huffington Post and that Matt Wuerker of Politico was honored with a Pulitzer for Editorial cartooning?…that NO AWARD WAS GIVEN in the category of editorial writing?…that for those who are insistent that print media is not in a dog fight with online publishing the awarding of Pulitzer Prizes to online publications in a head to head competition with print should put the purveyors of ink on notice?

IS IT TRUE that Keep Evansville Beautiful has released a rendering of a modernistic sculpture that will soon be welcoming visitors who come to Evansville by way of the airplane?…that the nearly $200,000 sculpture will be at the airport entrance with a purpose to give a good first and last impression to air travelers using the Dress Regional Airport?…that the CCO has been advocating for a positive airport experience for a long time now and that this sculpture may play a small role in a positive experience?…that one nagging question that we feel the need to bring up is “when will we be getting jetways”?…that the lack of jetways in inclimate weather guarantees a negative airport experience and that between rain, snow, cold, and humidity that inclimate weather is going on here over 200 days per year?…that a soaked or frozen visitor is unlikely to be impressed by any gateway sculpture in a way to remove the discomfort felt from not having jetways?…that we understand that donations made to KEB for a statue probably cannot be used for jetways and that jetway money should never be spent on a statue?…that we really hope that the jetways are installed before the sculpture because choosing form over function as in stadium but no sewers has become a way of life in Evansville?…that putting up a stature before investing in jetways sends the same message to visitors and residents alike and that message is that Evansville is not about substance?

IS IT TRUE that we are really wondering what has been going on with our federal government’s spending practices?…that between the arms trading to Mexican cartels, the GSA throwing over a million dollars in parties described by the Wall Street Journal as “raucous, extravagant, arrogant, and self congratulatory”, and now our secret service having “cathouse” parties with whores in Columbia before President Obama arrives it seems like there are no competent adults in charge?…that as the election approaches things like this will get tied up the chain of command and that if Washington really has become a frat house with our money that the guy who put the oblivious party animals in charge will eventually be asked to answer for these gross abuses of the public trust?…that it almost looks like the City of Evansville is running the country with all of the drinking, wasted money, and poor judgment on parade for all to see?

The food, rides and entertainment are just some of the activities which traditionally draws families and friends to historic downtown Henderson in April. Tri-Fest allows everyone to break out of the winter cabin fever and provides food, fellowship and fun for every member of the community.

The name Tri-fest is representative of our schools, churches and homes. Throughout our lives, many activities surrounding our home life, school calendars and church activities have influenced us in so many ways. The combination of all of these culminates into our community. The slogan of the Henderson Breakfast Lions Club is “We Serve”; the Tri-Fest is our opportunity to give back a small portion and serve the community. Over the past 17 years the club has given more than $300,000 from proceeds of the Tri-Fest. In addition many thousands of dollars have been earned by local non-profits through their food booths.

The primary interests for the Henderson Breakfast Lions Club are:
