IS IT TRUE that the morale of employees working in the Building Commission and Codes and Enforcement departments are rock bottom. …it been alleged by 6th Ward City Councilmen, Al Lindsey that one of the Mayor’s political patronage appointees working in these department may be getting special treatment from the Director, Ben Miller? … it may be worthwhile for Mr. Miller sit down and have a serious talk with Mr. Lindsey about his concerns?

IS IT TRUE that Terry White, Atty. candidate for Indiana State Senate has just released press statement committing to sponsoring legislation to assist our returning military Heroes and Wounded Warriors with tax credits and job assistance?… that we from reliable sources that State Senate Candidate Terry White campaign has received a major political jolt from this announcement?…we are now hearing that this race may becoming too close to call?

IS IT TRUE that Executive Director Diane Clements of the Human Relations Commission has rolled up her sleeves and done the legwork to uncover an agreement between the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County that calls for an 87% – 13% contribution ratio as opposed to the 91% – 9% asserted as justification for reducing the contribution approved unanimously by the County Commissioners?…Ms. Clements in a very real way by her research and her willingness to release it to the media has made the Vanderburgh County Commissioners look rather misinformed?…she should be commended for her thoroughness on behalf of her employer, the HRC?…that good diligence does not excuse the runaway pursuit of settlements at the expense of the Evansville Rescue Mission but it does show good management skills?…there have been many people who have shown good management skills and sound judgment in the non-profit world of Evansville, IN who have made elected officials look like dopes before and all of these people are no longer serving in the positions they once held?…the CCO encourages Ms. Clements to reflect on the agency that she has run, to expose any SNEGAL activities she has had to deal with, and to out any individuals whether elected or not for being dopes?…she can then look forward to a better job in another location as the dopes in charge in Evansville are very skilled at protecting their territory?

IS IT TRUE that it has now been 6 days since the City of Evansville was exposed for having failed to reconcile their accounts for 21 months?…there has been no one called on the carpet for an explanation, no accountability administered, and even a proclamation from Mayor Winnecke that it is all better now?…that it seems as though the powers that be just do not understand the gravity of failing to comply with Indiana law and not having the ability to count the taxpayer’s money for 21 months?…of all of the idiotic things that make one’s head spin that has been exposed in the last 3 years this one is the most serious yet the powers that be are cavalier about it?…that next Monday night at the regular meeting of the Evansville City Council there had better be some call for explanation and accountability demanded by Councilman John Friend, CPA and at least 4 other members of the Council?…the CCO invites all 9 members of the City Council to write position papers on what they think about the City of Evansville’s random and chaotic method of accounting that has been concealed for 21 months until last week’s release of the State Board of Accounts Audit that came with a DISCLAIMER?…that in all fairness current Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Controller Russ Lloyd Jr. were dealt a rotten hand straight from the bottom of the deck by the Weinzapfel Administration in this matter?…that the CCO believes that the people of Evansville deserve to know if former Mayor Weinzapfel even gave Mayor Winnecke the courtesy of advising him that the accounts were never reconciled in 2011?…if the Winnecke Administration was hung out to dry and had to learn this information in February 2012 when trying to reconcile as opposed to learning it from the outgoing administration that is a real problem that needs to be dealt with?

“Jubilee in the Rear View Mirror” Begins Next Month

The premiere of a two-act play based on the civil rights movement in 1964 will be presented Nov. 10-11 and Nov. 17-18 at the Evansville Civic Theater Annex in the Washington Square Mall. Saturday performances will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday shows will start at 2 p.m.

“Jubilee in the Rear View Mirror” is written by Garret Mathews, retired metro columnist for the Evansville Courier & Press. For more information, go to www.jubileeplay.com

The drama is set in the fictional town of Jubilee, Miss., during Freedom Summer when hundreds of activists headed South to register African-American voters and to desegregate schools, bus stations and businesses. Beatings and arrests were common. The Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Poverty Law Center lists more than 40 murders during the 1950s and ‘60s, including several at the hands of local law enforcement.

Ashley Ellen Frary of Evansville will direct the play and supervise set construction. She is a graduate of Millikin, Ill., University with a degree in theater and a concentration in acting. While at Millikin, Frary studied abroad in Europe and worked with several companies to include the Globe Theatre. Since returning to Evansville in 2009, she’s worked as an actor, director, choreographer and designer with several local theater organizations, among them Civic Theater and Think Pink! Productions. She is both troupe member and artistic director for Tales & Scales, an Evansville-based arts organization.

“In the play, a young black civil rights worker from the North finds himself in a cell with a white racist who is behind bars for beating his wife,” Mathews says. “The background comes from dozens of interviews I conducted with men and women of both races who risked their lives to challenge the deeply-rooted segregationist social and political structure in the South in the 1960s.

“Before pressure was brought to bear, black children in department stores were not allowed to try on new shoes,” Mathews goes on. “Salesmen traced the edges of their old shoes onto butcher paper and fetched an approximate fit from inventory. Many African-Americans who attempted to vote were fired from their jobs by white employers. Some had their homes fire-bombed by the Ku Klux Klan.”

“The cast and crew will be paid professional salaries,” Mathews says, adding that he plans to take the troupe to Mississippi prior to rehearsals. “I want them to meet with folks who were a part of the civil rights movement and learn from their experiences.”

There is a group Thumbs Up planned for this evening at the Fall Festival. Lane Goodwin if you recall, is the 13 year old from Beech Grove, KY that has a rare form of Cancer that literally affects 1 in a million children. Lisa Lewis, the coordinator of this evening’s activity, will be there taking video and pictures from EFD’s Ladder truck parked at St. Joe & Franklin. She is hoping to possibly set a Thumbs Up record in the process.

She invites everyone at the Fall Festival to look toward St. Joe Avenue at 6 PM and gave Lane a big Thumbs Up.

The free morning conference will include a variety of workshops and a continental breakfast. The Indiana Returning Heroes and Wounded Warriors Tax Credit

Thank you for coming. I’d like to talk to you today about the job challenges facing our veterans here in Indiana.

There are nearly 900,000 unemployed veterans in the United States-a staggering figure.

The latest department of labor and unemployment report shows that October 2011 the average unemployment rate among all veterans was 7.7% and 12.1% for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Equally troubling, veterans between the ages of 35 and 64, the group with the highest financial obligations and the fewest available VA education and training options, continue to make up nearly two-thirds of all unemployed veterans.

Overall, nearly 1 in 12 of our nation’s heroes can’t find a job to support their family, don’t have an income that provides stability, and don’t have work that provides them with the confidence and pride that is so critical to their transition home.

Indiana has 500,806 veterans. It is sad to say that our state is experiencing a 15.7% unemployment rate among Hoosier veterans who have served in the last ten years, and we have the fifth worst per-veteran return on benefits. We know that Indiana is one of just three states with a veteran’s affairs department that lacks accreditation from the U.S. Department of veteran’s affairs.
Even though the federal government tries to provide a number of services, including healthcare and some re-training here in Indiana, our state government does not do enough in helping those men and women who have served our country by putting their lives on the line to protect our freedoms.
While our gubernatorial candidates are calling for Indiana to hand more of its state contracts to veteran owned businesses, I think it’s important that we do everything in the private sector to encourage Hoosier employers to hire our Hoosier veterans.

Therefore, if I am elected as our next state senator, I intend to propose legislation, which I call the Indiana returning heroes and wounded warriors tax credit act, that would lower the rate of unemployment among our Indiana veterans.

It is essentially a hybrid version of the federal “Vow to Hire Heroes Act” which was signed into law in November of last year.

The entire gist of my proposal would be to provide tax credits to private employers for hiring veterans and disabled veterans who are out of work here in Indiana.
The tax credit would be for any business that hires a veteran that has been unemployed for at least four weeks.

It provides an even bigger tax break if a business hires a veteran who’s been unemployed for at least six months, and if a business hires an unemployed veteran with a disability related to their service it proposes doubling the tax credit for private employers in Indiana.

Essentially the returning heroes tax credit provides:
· for a credit of 40% of the first $6,000 of wages for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment compensation for at least four weeks;
· a credit of 40% of the first $12,000 of wages for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment compensation for longer than six months.

The wounded warrior tax credit would provide:
· a credit of 40% of the first $12,000 of wages for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been in receipt of unemployment compensation for at least 4 weeks;
· and 40% of the first $24,000 for those disabled veterans who have been unemployed for longer than 6 months.

We should continuously pay tribute and honor to our men and women who still serve in harm’s way.

We are forever in debt to a generation whose sacrifice has made this country safer and more respected.
When they take off the uniform, we should serve them as well as they have served us because no one who fights for this country should have to fight for a job, or a roof over their head, or the care they need when they come home.

Providing tax credits to employers who hire our Hoosier veterans is just one way I will continue to fight to protect the rights of working families in Indiana.
