Winnecke’s Plan for Roberts to Cost $6M – $8 Million

Lloyd Winnecke

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has announced a plan to demolish Roberts Stadium and remove the parking lot adding roughly 37 acres of green space for public recreation.

The Mayor has proposed to have features like a dog walk, outdoor fitness areas, a skateboard and bike park. The green space would also have a lake, picnic area, and foot trails.

Mayor Winnecke who claims to have done much of the research himself on trips to other locales expects the park to be a multiphase project and did not disclose the source of the funds to undertake the work.

In a previous attempt to demolish Roberts Stadium and install 8 baseball fields at a cost of $18 Million, the Weinzapfel Administration was counting on financial support from the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau that collects a hotel tax for projects that promote tourism.

Stimulus Economics from an Immigrant’s Perspective

Stimulus Economics from an Immigrants Perspective
Paraphrased from Nikola Lakic

The economy was terrible and nearly everyone in town was depressed over debt that they could not collect. It seemed as though every business had an account receivable that was overdue. To make matters worse everyone in town was carrying debt that they could not pay.

One day a government agent came to town with instructions from the fearless leader to stimulate the economy. The agent entered the struggling hotel and flashed a $100 bill stating his intention to stay the night if the accommodations were up to par. The innkeeper took the $100 as a deposit and allowed the government agent to inspect his rooms before deciding on whether or not to stay.

As soon as the agent was out of sight, the innkeeper ran across the street to pay the butcher the $100 that he owed him for last month’s meat bill. The butcher quickly drove to the farmer who had supplied the meat and paid the $100 invoice that had been overdue for some time. The farmer who wanted to conceal his collections from his wife hurried to the town prostitute to pay for services previously rendered. The prostitute had an overdue bill at the same hotel that the government agent was considering staying at so she headed to the hotel and handed the $100 to the innkeeper.

After that rapid sequence of events the agent of the government returned to advise the innkeeper that his accommodations were not satisfactory and that he wanted his $100 deposit back. The innkeeper promptly returned the $100 and the agent left town.

After the agent’s departure, the innkeeper, the butcher, the farmer, and the prostitute were all in a great mood since they were all out of debt and had collected that which they were owed. The attitude of the town was transformed from depression to optimism, all debts were wiped out, and all of this came about with nothing really being done. The stimulus was declared to be a resounding success by the fearless leader who naturally took credit for it.

Roberts Stadium Coming Down with Greenspace to Follow

10

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke today announced that his choice for Roberts Stadium in spite of the six possibilities for the stadium is the wrecking ball. In the short term arrangements will be made to demolish Roberts Stadium and the acreage will be turned into a green space.

No developer came forward with a proposal to fund any of the ideas that have been floated for Roberts Stadium even though it has been known for over a year that there were poosible opportunities available for interested parties. It is believed that the seats from Roberts will be used to replace the old seats at the Mesker Amphitheatre. It has not been disclosed when the $100,000 of painting and bleaching that are needed at Mesker will be done.

The War Over Class War: The Economist

Excerpts:

“For those who see such comments as tantamount to storming the Bastille, Barack Obama’s recent behaviour might bring to mind St Petersburg in 1917. According to Mr Romney, he is attacking nothing less than capitalism and the free-enterprise system. An article in Forbes magazine calls Mr Obama a “socialist in the European reform-Marxism tradition” although not, to be fair, “a communist of the cold war tradition”.”

” The main evidence of Mr Obama’s proletarian sympathies is a couple of advertisements recently released by his campaign depicting Bain Capital…In one, downtrodden former employees of a steel mill in which Bain Capital invested describe the firm as a “vampire” which “sucked the life” out of the business,…These ads are unfair, of course, ignoring as they do Bain Capital’s many successful investments, fudging Mr Romney’s role and leaving out many mitigating details.”

” Mr Romney is fond of saying that Mr Obama has no idea how the economy works and how jobs are created. The way the Obama campaign talks about Bain Capital suggests that his criticism is correct. Mr Obama, as noted above, likes to insinuate that there is a conflict between pursuing profits and creating jobs. In the long run, however, in a competitive economy, that is nonsense. Only profitable firms can sustain any jobs, and the more profitable they are, the more money they have to invest in new ventures with new workers. Mr Obama is guilty not of rhetorical excess but of economic muddle. That is far more worrying.”

IS IT TRUE June 6, 2012

The Mole #??

IS IT TRUE June 6, 2012

IS IT TRUE the voters of Wisconsin repudiated the recall of Governor Scott Walker last night by an unforeseen margin of 7% which was 2 points (40%) more than he defeated Mayor Barrett by in the Governor’s election of 2010?…the Lt. Governor who was also the subject of a recall election for the same reasons was also confirmed to her position?…that of the 4 Wisconsin State Senators who were also subjected to recall elections driven by self interest 3 of them all Republican prevailed?…that the Wall Street Journal this morning is calling this a “Victory for Self Governance” and characterized the recall elections as a “clear choice of small government ideology” in a state that has not voted Republican in a presidential election since the 1984 Reagan landslide over Mondale?…the WSJ article is on the following link?

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303830204577448991023586970.html

IS IT TRUE that neither candidate for President of the United States took an active role in the Wisconsin recall elections?…that President Obama didn’t utter a peep until Monday night when he simply tweeted (Twitter message) that he supports Barrett?…that one of this writers most liberal friends is a born and raised in Madison lady who would rather be dead that vote red?…that last night we exchanged emails about President Obama’s tepid participation in the Wisconsin recall?…that she referred to the President by every derogatory term known that would translate into “self serving coward”?…the term used most often started with chicken and ended with **it?…that Gina has vowed not to support the Obama campaign in November?…that if many other Wisconsinites are as incensed as Gina that the exit polls that showed Obama in the lead last night will be about as accurate as the plethora of polls that were showing the recall election as a tie right up until the last vote was counted yesterday?

IS IT TRUE that now a full 4 years after Mayor Weinzapfel proudly announced a deal in which Browning Investments would be building a $40 Million convention hotel with 4 Stars in downtown Evansville, we have spent $75,000 to learn that Evansville needs roughly a 3 Star hotel with 250 or so rooms and that we can expect it to cost just over $30 Million?…that this is the equivalent of a 6 year old taking 4 years to learn the ABC’s?…that the Ford Center and The Centre are 4 Star or above facilities and now we are being told to settle for a freeway hotel to serve them?…to put anything less than a 4 Star hotel that complements the Ford Center and The Centre is not any more acceptable than putting a trailer between two $350,000 houses?…if we just want to cheapen up downtown Evansville that sticking a freeway hotel down there is the way to do it?…the same words that Gina used to describe the President fit this plan perfectly?

IS IT TRUE we must remind our readers that there was a perfectly genuine overture made to the Winnecke Administration this year to refurbish the McCurdy into what it was meant to be and the call was not even returned?…a refurbished McCurdy would be unique, contain the desired number of rooms, command the kind of rates to have a chance at financial success, and complete a perfect triangle of venues with the MLK Entertainment district, the McCurdy, and Aztar making up the triangle?…this is worth real consideration and we hope that this discussion begins before running out to waste more time on collecting bids for a freeway hotel that will not event be considered “convention” worthy?…someone needs to look into the financial performance of the Fort Wayne convention center and hotels before heading down that same rabbit hole?
