IS IT TRUE October 13, 2012

IS IT TRUE that another one formidable and relevant Evansville company is sliding down the slope toward having no local presence at all?…that Vantiv has announced another round of layoffs that will be accompanied by the closing of their local office in favor of having its last 26 employees work from their respective homes?…that working from home is an operational strategy of a startup company that is saving cash for growth and not a long time established business with 26 employees?…that whatever camaraderie and culture that existed at Vantiv’s Evansville office will soon be gone?…that the remaining 26 warriors are most likely already looking for jobs?…this business just four or five years ago was occupying a significant portion of a riverfront high rise and was known as CSC?…CSC brought educated people in from all over the country who bought fine homes and had disposable income?…then Fifth Third bought them out and the first round of changes came?…then came another buy out and a name change?…that it will be true to form if in two years Vantiv takes the Whirlpool route and vanishes from the Evansville business community forever?…we are not surprised that there were no elected officials or surrogates lining up to cut ribbons in front of the 26 homes that these last loyal employees will now be working from?…that bad economic news must be kryptonite to a politician because they run from it like a rabbit running from a rattlesnake?

IS IT TRUE that the City County Observer is encouraged to see that the daily Evansville Police Reports that we post have been consistently under 10 pages recently?…that in 2011 the daily reports were exceeding 15 pages on a regular basis?…we hope that this is a lasting phenomena and that the people of Evansville and the good work of the EPD have combined to reduce the crime rate?

IS IT TRUE that on the heels of the exposure that the City of Evansville’s Controller’s Office during the Weinzapfel Administration botched up an integration of a new software package to the point that the books were not balanced for at least 21 months some good Civic Center Moles tell us that there is another software integration fiasco in the pipeline?…the discovery process is near completion and our readers can expect another exposure of bumbling and idiocy that resulted in the waste of taxpayer dollars in the very near future?

IS IT TRUE that a couple of strange revelations have come from the Obama debate preparation team since the shellacking the President took from Mitt Romney in the first of the debates?…that one is that President Obama blew off his last day of practice in favor of a trip to Hoover Dam that he had never seen?…the other strange bit of information is that the President came off of the debate stage thinking he had won the debate and had shown that feisty rascal Romney a thing or two?…that being the stated case which is hard to believe really exhibits extreme arrogance or disconnection with reality?…these two things are so off the wall that it would be easy to believe they are lies made up to set the stage for the second debate that is coming up on Tuesday?

IS IT TRUE as debating goes there is a fine line between being assertive and being abusive?…Mitt Romney stayed just to the assertive side of that line while Vice President Joe Biden crossed over the line and stayed there?

DCS TOWN HALL IN EVANSVILLE ON MONDAY

Area residents will have the chance to offer solutions to the problems plaguing the state’s Department of Child Services (DCS) at a town hall in Evansville this Monday (October 15).

The meeting – scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Room 1027 of the Health Professions Center on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana (USI) – is being hosted by State Rep. Gail Riecken (D-Evansville).

Riecken said the town hall is designed to supplement the work presently being done by a legislative study committee examining services offered to at-risk children in Indiana. It will enable residents to relate their experiences with DCS and offer ideas that can help DCS respond more quickly and thoroughly to keep our kids safe.

In addition, those who come to the town hall will be able to review several reform proposals offered by Riecken and other committee members.

Christy Baker, associate professor of social work at USI, will be the moderator.

The town hall will be available for viewing on the web at: mms://helix.usi.edu/wmtencoder/oct15.wmv

Biden cracks up at the vice presidential debate, By: Charles Hurt

7

Say whatever you want about last night’s debate, there is one thing we can all agree on. Joe Biden sure was happy.

How happy was the vice president? He looked happier than Bill Clinton with a bottle of Viagra and an intern.

All night long, Mr. Biden was just grinning like a jackass eating some cactus.

Republican Paul Ryan was over there talking about the dangers of a nuclear-armed Iran. Mr. Biden smiled so wide, it looked like his dentures might pop loose.

Mr. Ryan started talking about the crushing, double-digit unemployment in Mr. Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pa.

Mr. Biden just started grinning like a possum in a trashcan giving us alligator mouth.

Mr. Ryan studiously warned of the grave importance of getting “this debt and deficit under control to prevent a crisis.” Mr. Biden couldn’t mask the hilarity. He started chuckling audibly.
Then Mr. Ryan began painting a drastic picture of President Obama and Mr. Biden cutting $800 billion out of Medicare. Pure Biden sniggering.

Mr. Ryan warned how Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden want to throttle small businesses with a 44.8 percent tax rate, drawing shuddering laughter from the vice president.
At one point, Mr. Biden got so worked up he offered a joke of his own about “death panels” in Obamacare. It cracked himself up good.

When Mr. Ryan somberly pointed out that the Obama campaign had acknowledged distorting the Romney campaign’s tax plan, Mr. Biden blurted into laughter.

And when the much younger congressman explained how he and Mr. Romney are seeking “big bipartisan agreements” between Democrats and Republicans in Washington. Mr. Biden lost it. He began laughing hysterically, his shoulders shaking it was so funny. Full blown guffaws.

If President Obama overdosed on Valium last week, Mr. Biden apparently got into the Ecstasy last night. He was on the laughing gas.

I mean, really? What’s not to laugh about in the go-go Obama economy?

There are 23 million Americans unemployed today. We are $16 trillion in hock to the Chinese and others. Gas costs more than $5 a gallon in California, and coal mines are shutting down. A half-dozen states are on the brink of bankruptcy.

Who’s not laughing these days?

John Dunn will be honored with a City County Observer Mole Award

9

Evansville’s John Dunn will be honored with a City County Observer Mole Award at a noon luncheon at Casino Aztar on November 5, 2012.

Dunn began his business career in Evansville after an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, hence his love of flying and current ownership of a Cessna 310. He began at Fuqua Industries in 1959, which owned WROZ Radio and WTVW Channel 7. Dunn started in the Sales Department and by 1964 had been promoted to Vice President and General Manager of WROZ and in 1968 transferred to television.

In 1969, he and a business partner created Medco Centers Nursing Homes. By 1978, there were 28 Medco Centers throughout Indiana and Kentucky, which also included pharmaceutical and physical therapy subsidiaries. In 1978, Dunn sold these properties to a Canadian firm to focus on new ventures – the hotel industry, radio stations, television stations, land development . . .

In 1978, Dunn re-entered the broadcast business by purchasing radio stations in Rhode Island, New Mexico and Texas. At this same time he also built his first hotel, The Williamsburg Inn at the corner of Division Street and Green River Road.

Dunn eventually divested himself of the radio stations but ventured into television broadcasting with two Evansville low-power television stations (WTSN-LD Channel 36 and WYYW-LD Channel 41), which he continues to operate today.

Over the past 30 years, Dunn Hospitality Group, the management company founded by Dunn in 1978, has built or acquired 28 hotels in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

In 1990, Dunn and Bill Koester formed a joint venture to develop a 70-acre parcel of land on Evansville’s east side, now known as Eagle Crest Commerce Centre. At the groundbreaking for the first business to be located there, Dunn’s 143-room Hampton Inn, then-Mayor Frank McDonald recognized the vision of Dunn and Koester by proclaiming Eagle Crest as Evansville’s “New Front Door.”

Throughout the years Dunn has endeavored to enrich the community by restoring historical buildings – the Carpenter Home, which now houses the WNIN-Channel 9 facility, was restored and used as the corporate office for the Medco Centers; and the McCurdy Residential Center was initially the McCurdy Hotel.

Dunn is Chairman and CEO of Dunn Hospitality Group, whose corporate offices are located in Evansville. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors for Tri-State Youth for Christ and Oakland City University Foundation; Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees for University of Southern Indiana and past Chairman and Director of Welborn Baptist Foundation. He sits on the Corporate Board of Directors for South Central Communications, Inc. and retired from the Boards of Old National Community Bank and Vectren, Inc. in 2010. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for community groups that include Boys and Girls Club of Evansville, Past President of St. Mary’s Health Systems Seton Corporation, and WNIN-TV/FM88; and formerly on the Boards for Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce, YMCA and the Salvation Army.

Dunn is a member of the Advisory Council for Indiana University Medical School and a Trustee and member of Church of the Cross in Evansville.

Dunn is a Bosse High School alumnus – Class of ’55. He graduated from Oakland City University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Cum Laude. Dunn served 12 years on Oakland City University’s Board of Trustees and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities in 1977.

In 2004, Dunn was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the University of Southern Indiana.

He has been recognized by Evansville Rotarians, SW Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Buffalo Trace Council and the ROTC for his leadership, and received numerous other awards for his accomplishments in the business community.

Dunn is also a member of Evansville Country Club, Kennel Club, Palm Aire Country Club of Sarasota, FL and a Rotarian.

Dunn is married to Gail A. (Russell) Dunn. They have three daughters, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
