Staying true to form TEAM EFD once again had a successful year and made a showing at the 21st Combat Challenge World Championships dubbed WORLD CHALLENGE XXI.
As you can see from their 5 Regional competitions and a World Challenge results, TEAM EFD is a force to be reckoned with. Congratulations to the Evansville Fire Department Challenge team members: Team Captain Joey Jones, Adam Brock, George Madison and Marc Schiele. Their results speak for themselves.
Joey Jones graciously supplied us with a recap of this year’s competitions. His number is below if you wish to contact him.
Here is the Evansville Fire Combat Challenge Team Wrap up for the season. I have attached a few pictures. If it’s possible, we would also like to get the word out that we are looking for 2013 team sponsors.
The first 4 days of worlds are wild card days in which each team competes for a spot in the finals which are ran on the last two days. We were able to run fast enough in the Team, Relay, and Tandem to make it. Not all teams get the privilege to run on the final two days. The finals consist of teams from all over the world, not just the US.
Returning team members are Adam Brock, George Madison, and Joey Jones. Marc Schiele started competing with the team at the start of the 2012 season.

Janet Leistner, director of EVSC’s Virtual Academy, was recently named one of the Top 50 Innovators in Education by The Center for Digital Education, a national research and advisory institute that specializes in K-12 technology trends, policy and funding. As one of the top 50, Leistner was featured in the organization’s 2012 Yearbook, a publication that reviews the past academic year.
Leistner, who was nominated for the recognition by Teri Citterman who works in the Communications Department at Apex Learning, built the Virtual Academy from the ground up and has since expanded the Academy to include core, honors and advanced placement (AP) classes for high school students. Leistner also is in the process of expanding the Academy to include courses for elementary and middle school students.
The EVSC’s Virtual Academy was created in 2010 and allows students to enroll in online courses for credit recovery or advancement. Courses are taught by licensed teachers who regularly communicate with students and their families. Curriculum for the program is provided through Apex Learning, a digital curriculum that offers multiple course pathways to meet the specific needs of students.
Evansville, IN – Monday, November 19, 2012 Michael A. Lane, age 25, was sentenced by Judge Kelly Fink in Vanderburgh County Circuit Court to 55 years for the murder, four years each for two Class C Felony counts of Criminal Recklessness, and 10 years for Class B Felony Conspiracy to Commit Dealing a Schedule II Substance. Lane’s time is to be served concurrently in the Indiana Department of Corrections.
On October 12, 2012, Lane was convicted by a Vanderburgh County jury of Murder, two counts of Criminal Recklessness – Class C Felony and Conspiracy to Commit Dealing in a Schedule II Substance – Class B Felony.
In February 2009, Lane was arrested and charged with Class A Felony Dealing in Cocaine. Lane was released on bond and awaiting trial when the January 2010 murder took place. Lane will be in court November 20, 2012 to set a trial date for the Class A Felony Dealing in Cocaine.

“Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly) applauds the strong House vote passing Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) with Russia. Russia’s accession into the World Trade Organization provides innovative biopharmaceutical companies strong intellectual property and foreign investor protections.
“Without Congressional passage of PNTR, U.S. investors such as Lilly do not have these critical protections and that is why today’s House vote was such an important step towards passage of PNTR. Lilly particularly applauds the strong vote by the Indiana delegation. Emerging markets such as Russia are critical to the future growth of Lilly and hence keeping good jobs in Indiana.
“We urge the Senate to move expeditiously in this lame duck session to pass PNTR so that Lilly and other U.S. companies are not left behind in the Russian marketplace.â€
Background:
A recent report by the Business Roundtable stated Indiana exported more than $80 million work of goods to Russia in 2011, supporting 225 jobs directly. The report can be viewed here.
In August, Russia joined the World Trade Organization (WTO). The PNTR allows the United States to take advantage of economic opportunities created by the concessions that Russia made to join the WTO, including: lowering tariffs, providing greater market transparency, protecting intellectual property rights, and abiding by the WTO’s rules of international trade.
American agriculture exports over $1.4 billion to Russia annually, primarily poultry, pork and beef products.
On July 13, 2012, Congressman Bucshon joined 72 fellow House Republican freshmen in a letter to President Obama expressing their commitment in working towards granting Russia permanent normal trade relations. The letter can be read here.
Technology is ever changing and school corporations like the EVSC are working hard to ensure students learn the skills they need to compete in the 21st Century. To help the corporation stay ahead of that curve, EVSC employee Tim Wilhelmus, integrated curriculum and technology specialist, was notified recently that he has been named an inaugural member of the Sony Educational Ambassador Program. Wilhelmus is one of 11 members nation-wide who will work with Sony to shape how schools around the nation implement technology. As members, they will share their experiences through an online community database of lesson plans, app reviews, forums, step-by-step technology-use cases, and more.
Wilhelmus first learned about the program through a presenter at last summer’s EVSC eRevolution Conference and decided to apply. The application process included the submission of a three-minute video that introduced him and explained how he wanted to be a part of the process of finding technology solutions that truly enhance learning.
Later this month, Sony will fly the 11 members to San Diego for an initial collaboration meeting. Over time, Wilhelmus plans to share what he has learned with the EVSC, allowing the corporation to continue to extend its knowledge about teaching in the digital age.

John Farless has been promoted to director of News and Information Services at the University of Southern Indiana. He assumed his new role on November 12, 2012.
Farless joined USI News and Information Services as senior writer in January 2012 after more than 10 years as associate director of communications at Saint Meinrad Archabbey and Seminary and School of Theology. Prior to that, he served as staff writer, photographer, and interim editor at the Perry County News.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in communications with an emphasis in print journalism and a minor in sociology from USI. While a USI student, he served as managing editor of The Aerie, arts and entertainment editor for The Shield, and cover photographer for Transitions magazine.
“I’m excited to take on the role of director of News and Information,†said Farless. “USI continues to grow and thrive, and to establish itself as an excellent opportunity for higher education in Indiana. I look forward to continuing to work with the USI community to tell our story.â€
Farless replaces Kathy Funke, who retired as director of News and Information Services after 22 years in the position. Funke is still employed at the University and currently working on special projects for University Relations.
The Office of News and Information Services is a department within University Relations and part of Marketing and Communications at USI. The office is responsible for media relations; copy and publications about the University, including the USI Magazine; photography; and sports information, as well as managing the University’s social media presence.
