HSI brochure_2013

The 23rd Annual Deaconess/EVSC Health Science Institute is a rigorous, two-week summer program for high-achieving high school students in Southwestern Indiana who are interested in exploring healthcare careers. Deaconess Hospital in Evansville and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation partner to sponsor HSI with help from the Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC).

HSI is a valuable opportunity for students to experience a wide variety of health careers first-hand. Students live on the main campus of Deaconess Hospital in Evansville for two weeks as they hear from 100+ health professionals, participate in 12 different clinical rotations (including witnessing surgery and hopefully a birth), and explore Deaconess facilities and local universities. Students register over 150 hours of seat time during the two weeks, and can earn one credit in Advanced Applied Science upon successful completion of HSI requirements.

Please share information about HSI with any student who may have an interest in a healthcare career, and feel free to forward this email as needed.

Over the past 22 years, more than 550 students have participated in the program; many are now serving in the healthcare field as physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, and others. Testimonials from ten HSI alumni are at the end of this email. In 2012 25 students from Evansville high schools, Castle, Boonville, Mt. Vernon, North Posey, Gibson Southern, New Harmony, Pike Central, Forest Park, and Jasper participated in the program; students from Princeton, Wood Memorial, Tecumseh, and Tell City have participated in past years.

Attached to this email is an HSI application in PDF format; each high school in the ten counties in Southwestern Indiana should have received a supply of paper copies via mail recently. The application is also accessible at http://www.deaconess.com/hsi.

Students must be current sophomores or juniors in a Southwestern Indiana high school or home school in Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Pike, Perry, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, or Warrick counties who have at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Interested students must submit the completed application and other application requirements (essay, transcript, science teacher recommendation, counselor signature) no later than 4:00 pm CST on Friday February 1, 2013 to:

Note Distributed with 1st Paycheck of 2013

4

Date: January 4, 2013

To: All Employees

From: Cathy XXXXX, SVP, Human Resources

Subject: Important Change Affecting Your Paycheck

I wanted to let you know about a change that will affect your paycheck beginning this week.

As you are probably aware, Congress passed major tax and spending legislation over the New Year’s holiday. In passing that legislation, Congress chose not extend a 2010 tax cut that affects nearly all American workers.

All employers, including Tenet, are required by the federal government to deduct a portion of each employee’s wages to fund Social Security. This “payroll tax” (which is identified as “FICA-SS” on your paystub) was temporarily reduced in 2010 and 2011 from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent. That tax cut expired on December 31, 2012.

Because Congress did not extend the tax cut, all employees will see an increase in the amount of Social Security/FICA tax that is withheld from their paychecks each pay period. While this change will affect each employee differently, as an example, a person earning $50,000 will pay an additional $83 in taxes each month.

This change is mandated by the federal government and is not a change in our compensation policies. However, I am committed to making sure you are informed about changes like this that affect you.

If you have any questions about this change, please contact your Human Resources representative.

Cathy

IS IT TRUE January 4, 2013

The Mole #??

IS IT TRUE January 4, 2013

IS IT TRUE that Mole #33 is telling us that Mayor Winnecke has gone hat in hand down to the Evansville Convention and Visitors Board (ECVB) president Bob Warren to beg for some spare change to secure funding for two walk bridges that will be needed to go along with the future convention hotel?…there is already a bridge to nowhere that could serve as an approach for an Olympic diving board into the sinkhole/pool/pond that is in the unfenced lot across from the Centre right now?…one of the needed bridges could be doing some bailing wire and duct tape patchwork to get that walk bridge into pedestrian shape once again?…the building slated for that lot is a storage building that SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE FORD CENTER PROJECT?…the duct tape bridge would go from the Centre to the Storage Shed?…another bridge will be needed as well to connect the new convention hotel (assuming there will ever be one) to the Ford Center, the Centre, and the Storage Shed?…the funds targeted by Mayor Winnecke to do all of this bridge work are none other than the Innkeepers taxes that were at one time slated to build $20 Million ball fields?

IS IT TRUE that Casino Aztar just completed a new walk bridge that spans Riverside Drive so that people at Le Merigot or the District can safely and dryly proceed to the Casino and back?…this bridge has been reported to have cost over $3 Million?…this was Aztar’s private investment to stimulate their other private investments in Evansville’s entertainment industry including two hotels?…Aztar also pays the City of Evansville in the area of $10 Million per year in “Riverboat taxes”?…that there are other innkeepers in Evansville who are conscripted into collecting the Innkeeper’s tax and handing it over to the ECVB who are not on the preferred list of downtown developers?…Aztar and the other Evansville based innkeepers are being gouged into collecting tax money and delivering it to local government and its surrogates and that very local government is plotting to appropriate these funds in enterprises that compete with Aztar and the other innkeepers?…this is sneaky, this is legal, but people THIS IS NOT ETHICAL?…we should all ask ourselves if we were treated this way as citizens whether or not this would be tolerated?…the CCO predicts that at some point in the future there will be consequences to be paid by Mayor Winnecke, the ECVB, and by any member of the City Council that support this scheme financially?

IS IT TRUE that Mole #5 and a few other well placed Moles confirm that Mayor Winnecke alone has made his choice from the three proposals to build a downtown convention hotel?…we have it on further authority that the CHOSEN ONE has a marquee property in Branson, Missouri and that the Mayor is frantically organizing a trip to Branson with a posse of elected officials to look the place over?…this is part of the due diligence process but we wonder how the Mayor could have made his choice without making any visits?…the pending Branson trip does not seem to be for VETTING purposes at all if the choice has already been made?…if the choice is made then this is a SELLING trip and should be treated as such?

IS IT TRUE that there is also money in the City of Evansville budget for a trip to Evansville’s sister city in Germany?…before proceeding with this trip any elected official taking part needs to review the trip reports from sister city visits to Germany and Japan in the past?…if something real, tangible, and beneficial has come from the dozens of trips overseas that Mayors and Council members have taken in the past then such a trip may have merit?…if the dozens of previous trips to chug beer with the Burgermeister have not produced any real economic benefit, then such trips need to be suspended until a real business opportunity is defined?

IS IT TRUE Mole #16 tells us that the Department of Metropolitan Development is up to its sneaky trick of denying members of the Evansville City Council access to material financial information?…holding material information away from the people who have been elected to fund the city is not appropriate and should not be tolerated?…the CCO will cooperated with any and all members of the Evansville City Council to beat material information out of the DMD by the use of the Freedom of Information Act as deemed appropriate?…the new guy who head that department had better take notice of the consequences of being obstinate to his partners in government?

Fifty-Six Percent of U.S. Gym Members Dread the Return of the New Year’s Resolution Crowd, Finds New CouponCabin.com Survey

0

WHITING, Ind., Jan. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — As 2013 arrives, with it comes new
calendars, new fashions and of course, new resolutions. Many of those new year’s
resolutions will involve getting healthier. A new CouponCabin.com survey reveals
that 65 percent of U.S. adults plan on making fitness-related new year’s
resolutions this year. Eating healthier, getting in better shape and losing
weight top the list, followed by exercising more at home and outdoors,
eliminating certain foods from diets and going to the gym more. This survey was
conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com
from December 17th to December 19th, 2012, among 2,309 adults ages 18 and older.

With so many people focused on improved well-being in the new year, they will be
hitting the gym en masse this January and some current U.S. gym members aren’t
thrilled about it. More than half (56 percent) of current gym members at least
somewhat dread the new year’s resolutions crowd, i.e. the group of people who
make fitness-related resolutions and crowd the gym, take up machines and leave
scarce equipment available. Fifteen percent report they completely dread the new
year’s resolution crowd.

Even though the gym will be packed in the weeks following New Year’s Day, many
will lose their motivation quickly. More than one-in-ten (11 percent) U.S.
adults have signed up for a gym membership as a new year’s resolution and quit
before the year was over, up from 7 percent who said the same last year. Women
are more likely to quit in less than a year than men, at 14 percent and 8
percent, respectively.

Eighty percent of those who have quit the gym within a year quit within five
months, with 4 percent saying they quit in January and 14 percent quitting in
February.

“Getting healthy is a common resolution for many people, and a fitness center
often plays a big role,” said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings
Officer at CouponCabin.com. “Sometimes, though, cost can be a concern when it
comes to gym memberships. More than half of the people we surveyed said they
spent more than $26 per month on fitness-related expenses last year, which can
add up quickly. Get creative and consider low-cost fitness options around your
house and community to help save money.”

For many people, their 2013 fitness budgets will remain in line with 2012.
Nearly three-in-four (73 percent) who spent money on fitness-related expenses
last year plan to spend the same amount on fitness-related expenses in 2013 that
they did in 2012. Sixteen percent plan to spend more and 26 percent plan to
spend less in 2013.

Clean Evansville Collects Nearly 20,000 lbs. of Trash in First Year

EVANSVILLE, IN – This month marks a milestone for Clean Evansville. On January 7, 2012, the first group of volunteers filled more than 250 bags with trash and picked-up a couple of couches, six tires and countless cigarette butts from streets and alleys throughout Downtown Evansville.

On Saturday, January 5, 2013, Clean Team volunteers will commemorate the one year anniversary of Mayor Lloyd Winnecke’s anti-litter initiative by picking-up litter in Ward 4 around the Tepe Park Neighborhood. Volunteers will gather at various starting points at 9 a.m., and they will meet at the Tepe Park Shelter House for a wrap-up at 11 a.m.

Mayor Winnecke said Clean Evansville has been well received by the community, based on the number of participants. More than 2,100 people have volunteered for the monthly clean-ups held at different locations across the city. Many of the volunteers have participated in more than one event, collecting nearly 20,000 pounds of litter and trash, including shopping carts, hubcaps and wooden pallets.

“I’d like to thank the citizens of Evansville and our corporate and community sponsors, including Keep Evansville Beautiful, Allied Waste and Rural King, for making Clean Evansville’s first year such a huge success. With your help we have collected over 10 tons of trash!” said Mayor Winnecke. “As we begin our second year our work is far from over. I hope to see more people involved as we continue working together to make Evansville a cleaner and better place to live.”

“Keep Evansville Beautiful applauds the hundreds of volunteers who join Mayor Winnecke every month to pick up litter,” said Keep Evansville Beautiful Executive Director Cheryl Musgrave. “The Clean Evansville Initiative is at the heart of our civic mission and we look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries working together to beautify our city.”

Clean Evansville is a community partnership between the City of Evansville and Keep Evansville Beautiful, with support from Allied Waste, Rural King and media partner 14News WFIE-TV. Rural King donates supplies such as gloves; Allied Waste hauls the trash to the landfill and Keep Evansville Beautiful coordinates volunteers and provides trash bags. Individuals interested in joining or forming a team should contact Mike McGarrah at 425-4461.
