Multiple Agencies Crackdown on School Bus Stop Arm Violations

This entire week, Indiana State Police, Warrick County Sheriff’s Department, Boonville Police, Chandler Police and Newburgh Police conducted a special enforcement blitz targeting drivers who failed to stop for school buses while loading or unloading students.

During a one-day statewide poll last year, school bus drivers throughout Indiana observed 1,089 stop arm violations. “Stop arm violations occur almost every day in Warrick County,” said Warrick County School Corporation Transportation Director Guy Gentry. In November 2007, a Warrick County girl was seriously injured when she was struck by a car on SR 261 as she was getting off the bus.

Between 6:15 – 8:00 a.m. and 2:50 and 4:00 p.m. this week, officers followed school buses or were parked at pre-arranged locations observing for stop arm violations. During the five-day event, those officers stopped 21 drivers who illegally passed a school bus while either loading or unloading students.

Troopers want to remind drivers they are required by law to stop and not pass a school bus when the red lights are flashing and the flashing stop arm is extended. Drivers are not required by law to stop for a school bus when they are approaching from the opposite direction and there is a concrete barrier or grassy median dividing the lanes. For example: A school bus is eastbound on SR 66 and stops at Country Place Drive to unload children. All eastbound traffic must stop for the school bus. Because there is a concrete barrier dividing eastbound and westbound traffic, drivers traveling westbound are NOT required to stop for the school bus. Drivers traveling on a multiple lane highway with no concrete barrier or grassy media are required to stop in all directions when a school bus stops to load or unload children. SR 662 between Newburgh and Evansville and SR 62 between Chandler and Boonville are two examples where drivers must stop in all directions when a school bus stops to load or unload students.

Indiana State Police will continue to collaborate with the Warrick County School Corporation and other Warrick County law enforcement agencies to ensure all students are safe while loading or unloading from their school buses.

IS IT TRUE April 5, 2013

The Mole #??

IS IT TRUE that owner of Shaggy’s Towing approached owners of Hamrick’s Towing and ask them to partner up with them to put in a bid for the 2012 City of Evansville towing contract?…that the owners of Hamrick Towing declined the Shaggy Towing company offer?…between trying to partner with Hamrick’s and eventually finding a willing partner in Tri-State Towing 20/20 hindsight would lead to the conclusion that Shaggy’s Towing was not capable of handling the City of Evansville Towing contract and knew it?…it is possible through the lens of 20/20 hindsight that Shaggy’s Towing simply wanted to leverage its status as a minority owned business to get in on a few taxpayer dollars while continuing its existing operation as usual?…it has been reported that Shaggy’s Towing was operated out of a residence?…this may be a first in the country to have a towing business run out of a house?…we wonder just how in the dickens a home based business permit was obtained to operate a towing business out of a private home?…in the event that there was no permit or permission granted to run a towing business out of a home we wonder how a bunch of tow trucks coming and going was able to happen under the radar?…the City of Evansville may have a code enforcement arm that can spot a contractor installing a front door without a permit from a mile away but can’t spot tow trucks?…the probability that Shaggy’s Towing was operating out of a residence without the knowledge of City official is just about ZERO?…the application to be the towing provider must have had an address on it?…whomever did the VETTING of Shaggy’s Towing for the City of Evansville must have also been doing the VETTING for the Earthcare Energy deal?…willful ignorance and looking the other way is no way to run anything much less a city of over 100,000 people?

IS IT TRUE that during the Safety Board Hearing back in February/March of 2012, the owner of Tri-State Towing entered testimony before the Board that they were going to mentor Mr. Carter’s Shaggy’s Towing as a MBE [minority based entity] in order to gain the City’s towing contract? …that reliable sources indicate that the Mayor requested the then president of the board Jayne Manis’ resignation a month or so later without any reason given to her?

IS IT TRUE that it is looking like Indiana is really going to become the first state to put guns in public schools for protection?…as many of our readers know the CCO is a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution that grants us the right to bear arms?…even though we support the 2nd Amendment it is sad that the day has come that guns are a necessary part of a day in school?…when most of us were young it was not even something anyone thought about and this writer does not recall any school shootings in K-12 during our “wonder years”?…what we did have in schools to keep the piece when bullying, stealing, fighting, or a whole other host of misbehaving happened was the now banned PADDLE?…many of us this writer included felt the sting of a PADDLE ACROSS THE BUTT when we got out of line?…one thing that a paddling did was stop the misbehaving immediately?…not only did it stop the one who was paddled from acting up, it stopped the whole classroom?…the sound of another kid getting his AZZ BUSTED was sufficient to improve the behavior of everyone within hearing distance?…perhaps if the school administrators would have found a way to keep the paddle as a discipline tool we would not be having all of these discussions about guns in the schools now?…to sit back and think about the paradox of banning paddles but mandating guns is just mind boggling?…we wonder just how much further American society will have to slide before our lawmakers return to techniques for maintaining order that had been proven for centuries as opposed to new age methods which clearly are aiding the creation of a more violent society?

As the culmination to a weeks- long project, Stringtown Elementary School will turn into a petting zoo tomorrow during recess time. For the past several weeks, third grade students at Stringtown have been working on a project to raise money for Heifer International, an organization that provides gifts of livestock and training to families around the world, after reading the book “Beatrice’s Goat.” The book is about a family in Uganda who receives a goat through Heifer International and because of the proceeds the family earned, Beatrice was able to attend school and even travel to the United States to attend college. After reading the book, third graders wanted to do something themselves to help other families in the same way. Students decided to start their own fundraising campaign and have been working to raise money.

In addition to her media center and site coordinator duties, Forche took the school photo with the children in their new “No Excuses University” t-shirts and will sell it to raise money for the school’s college scholarship fund for a Harrison High School graduate that formerly attended Fairlawn. She is sponsoring a “Crop for College” event to raise more money for the fund and Hale added that parent volunteers now have a work area thanks to her efforts.

STATEHOUSE – Several state representatives from southwest Indiana offered a resolution Tuesday congratulating the Evansville Mater Dei girls’ basketball team on their Class 2A State Championship. State Representative Ron Bacon (R-Chandler) was joined on the resolution in the House by Representatives Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville), Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon) and Tom Washburne (R-Evansville).

“I am very pleased that we were able to recognize the girls’ basketball team for their accomplishments, particularly because Mater Dei is my alma mater,” said Rep. Bacon. “I coached girls’ softball for 24 years and know firsthand the amount of hard work it takes for the girls, their families and the coaches to accomplish their goal of winning a state title, for any high school sport. It was great to recognize their success at the Statehouse.”

The Evansville Mater Dei girls’ basketball team defeated Eastern (Greentown) 62 to 42 to win the Class 2A state championship for the second consecutive year.

“I am incredibly proud of these young student athletes,” said Rep. Crouch. “Their success on and off the court is commendable. Participating in high school athletics is an excellent way to learn the beneficial values of hard work, determination and time management.”

This second consecutive state title for the Mater Dei girls’ team marks the first time an Evansville team has won back-to-back state basketball titles since the Benjamin Bosse High School boys’ team won in 1944 and 1945.

“This success is also a testament to the time and effort put into skill development by the parochial schools preparing students for Mater Dei,” said Rep. Washburne. “We are proud of these young women and look forward to hearing about future accomplishments.”

Since they have won the championship two years in a row, the team will now move up a class, to 3A.

“Winning a state championship is an incredible accomplishment that these young ladies will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Rep. McNamara. “More importantly than receiving trophies and recognition, these girls display the type of grace, dignity and class that will serve them well in the future.”

The team was led by head coach Steve Goans and assistant coaches Terry Muensterman, Joel Bueltel, Aubrey Goebel, Micah Konkler and Sister Mary Francis.
