Bucshon to Announce Winner of Art Competition

8th District high school student to have work displayed in nation’s Capitol

Representative Larry Bucshon (IN-08) will visit the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana to review submissions to his Congressional Art Competition and announce the winner on Thursday, May 2nd, in Evansville.

The Congressional Art Competition is an annual event held by Rep. Bucshon open to all students who are currently enrolled in a high school located in the 8th District.

The winner was selected by an expert panel from the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana and will be announced by Bucshon on May 2nd at 3:30pm.

Bucshon will be joined with students who submitted artwork to the competition and their families.

The winner of the 8th District’s competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol along side artwork from other contest winners nation-wide. The winner will also receive two free roundtrip tickets to Washington, DC from Southwest Airlines, a gift card for the Marriott Hotel chains, tours of the Capitol and the White House, and an invitation to the Congressional awards ceremony.

Indiana State Police Warns Public of Local Current Scam

Indiana State Police at Evansville are currently investigating two separate incidents where individuals have handed over money to an unknown male claiming to be a landlord who is about to evict his tenants. Indiana State Police Detectives believe this male will continue to scam others if given the opportunity.

On April 15th, an Evansville Pastor received a phone call from a person alleging to be indigent and explained that he would be evicted from his residence on Telephone Road in Warrick County unless he could pay his landlord $95.00 to partially cover the rent he owed. He further explained that his wife was currently being treated for health issues at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh. The pastor agreed to meet the landlord at the hospital. Sometime between 3:00 – 3:40 p.m., the pastor drove to the hospital and met the alleged landlord and insisted on speaking to the tenants before he would turn over the check. The man led the pastor into the hospital and into an empty patient room. The pastor was told that the couple must be in the lab for tests. They both walked to the lab, but failed to find the tenants. The pastor eventually handed over the check for $95. After the landlord left, the pastor checked with the front information desk and discovered that the woman was not even a patient at the hospital. He was able to stop payment on the check.

In February, an unknown male contacted a representative of St. Vincent DePaul Society in Evansville. The male caller claimed a couple was being evicted from their home because they couldn’t pay their rent. The caller further claimed that the landlord had agreed to drop eviction proceedings if they could come up with $120 for the rent they owed. The representative from St. Vincent DePaul Society later met the alleged landlord at Schnucks’ parking lot on the west side of Evansville and handed him a check for $120. The representative became suspicious later when all the phone numbers he had been given for the tenants and landlord were either disconnected or not correct. He also discovered the address given to him as the residence where the tenants were being evicted from was a vacant lot.

Suspect Information: It is not known at this time if the male portraying himself as the landlord is acting alone or if he has others that are assisting. Detectives say the suspect is a white male and approximately 40-years-old. No other description is available at this time.

Indiana State Police Detectives would like to warn everyone that scams occur almost every day and it’s important to do some research before turning over cash to a stranger. Detectives also believe there are possibly additional victims that have not contacted police. HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR BRINGS HER STORY OF SURVIVAL TO EVANSVILLE

Alisa Almuly Palmeri will speak with students at three area schools.

Some middle school students in Evansville who are studying the Holocaust will have an opportunity to meet and speak with a woman who lived through it this week.

Alisa Palmeri and her family fled from the Nazi’s during World War II, traveling from Yugoslavia, to Italy, where an entire Italian town worked together to protect and care for them. She will share her story with students at EVSC’s Thompkins Middle School on Thursday, May 2, at 10 a.m.

The media is encouraged to attend the event at Thompkins. Palmeri will also work with students at Plaza Park International Prep Academy and Holy Rosary School. For information on arranging interviews at those locations, please call or email the contact person above.

Lockdown at North HS‏

Earlier today, North High School was on lockdown very briefly, because it was believed that an unauthorized individual was in the building. The School Resource Officer was on the scene and it was determined quickly that it was a current student who was out of dress code and wearing a ball cap in the hallway. The lockdown was lifted after just a few minutes.

JURY FINDS HICKS GUILTY OF MURDER

April 30, 2013, Robert Hicks, age 56, was convicted of killing his girlfriend, Anna Jochem, in July of 2012 in Vanderburgh County Circuit Court. Hicks’ faces 45-65 years. Judge David Kiely will sentence Hicks on May 28, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.

“We’re pleased with the verdict and hope it gives the family some closure to move on from this horrific tragedy,” Prosecutor Nick Hermann said Tuesday. “We want to thank the Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators from the Evansville Police Department for their dedication and hard-work on this case.”

IS IT TRUE in ancient times legend has it that a city and its leaders with great ambitions and the labors of their subjects at their beckon call embarked upon a construction project that was to cement (or tar as some versions say) their glory forever as lords of the earth?…most cultures have such legends and some even have ruins to point to as lessons to their children not to spend their time and money of foolish pursuits of arrogance?…the legend is known to most of us who grew up with Judeo-Christian influences as the story of the Tower of Babel?…it seems as though many cities in modern America have at one time or another borrowed money and forced their taxpaying constituents to build their own versions of Towers of Babel?…Evansville has been guilty of erecting Towers of Babel in the past and all indications are that another such group of projects are about to be undertaken?…Towers of Babel seldom work out well for their builders?

IS IT TRUE the latest assertions coming from Mayor Winnecke’s office are that it is time to make haste and to not wait another hour before voting his administration the authority to borrow money to go forward with spending $37.5 Million taxpayer dollars (before interest and overruns) on getting a convention hotel in downtown Evansville?…the City County Observer agrees with some of the claims of supporters of this project with respect to making Evansville a slightly easier sale to conventions looking for a place to convene?…the 256 rooms proposed will indeed make a good resting place for 256 people who attend each convention we would not have otherwise gotten?…that is a drop in the bucket of attendees at major conventions?…while 256 Doubletree (3 Star hotel) may take Evansville a bit closer to becoming “Lord of the Flies” on the irrelevant convention circuit, it will not make us a major player?…for this reason and for the reason that public dollars should not be used to subsidize private business in a capitalistic society even though we recognize some value from this hotel, the CCO believes this to be a fool’s errand, a cover-up for a flawed Ford Center design, and the next monopoly piece in 21st Century Evansville’s TOWER OF BABEL?

IS IT TRUE that government has seen this rush to act many times and the most recent large and visible case being the rapid passing of ObamaCare jammed through the United States Congress without sufficient time to think or even read what it said?…then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi even had the arrogance and gall to state on camera “we have to pass it to see what it is”?…these words have become an albatross around her neck and a rallying cry to opponents to ObamaCare in its present form as the architects of the plan distance themselves and refer to its implementation as A TRAIN WRECK?…the willful failure to think things through completely and the rush to pass this subsidy before knowing the fate of the watered down proposal that Evansville government has made to the EPA mandate to fix our sewers is short sighted and deserving of a PRINCE OF BABEL award?…it is even more disturbing that the opponents to this rush to subsidy stayed on the couch or the porch Monday night when the parade of beneficiaries of such projects all showed up to sing praises to this Tower of Babel project at Monday night’s meeting of the City Council?

IS IT TRUE packing the podium with friendly beneficiaries is a trick mastered by the Weinzapfel Administration to make it look like the arena project enjoyed broad support and the Winnecke Administration is now playing the exact same cards?…the complacency of the public enabled the Weinzapfel Administration to have its way and if the public stays on the couch in silence soon Evansville will be borrowing over $100 Million to subsidize a hotel, read water meters from space, build another park or two, and who knows what else?…this will all be rushed through BEFORE WE KNOW THE RESULTS OF THE AUDITS OF THE FORD CENTER, ITS IT PROJECT, AND WHETHER OUR IMMEDIATE SEWER REPAIR BILL WILL BE $250 MILLION OR $600 MILLION?…this rush makes as much sense as a two year old urging its mother to spend the family food budget on candy and ice cream as opposed to good food?…these Towers of Babel are all going to happen unless the people of this fair city take the initiative to make their thoughts knows?…the adjectives to describe those who fall for the same tricks over and over are not flattering?…we shall know by the end of the summer whose Evansville this really is and if we are all to be treated to two years in Babylon playing out in downtown Evansville once again?

2nd Hand Chic Offers Much More Than Just Another Consignment Experience

In 2002 Heather Ricketts was approached by her sister-in-law, Lori Ricketts, with an opportunity to start their own business on the west side of Evansville. Heather recognized the opportunity to do something she’d always wanted to do, and jumped on the idea. Having taken time to materialize their vision the two opened 2nd Hand Chic a short time later on Broadway Avenue. The two worked together for the first couple years until Lori left the business and opened an electrical contracting company with her husband. Since then Heather has moved the business to 716 N. Sonntag Ave. in the Westside Plaza next to El Charro.

The “Home Grown, Home Owned” 2nd Hand Chic specializes in woman’s and junior’s designer clothes and accessories. Due to the changing seasons the shop is always running a sale on certain items. 2nd Hand Chic has an outstanding turnover in terms of product and has over 950 consignees so there is always a nice variety of sizes and styles. 2nd Hand Chic is full of blouses, jeans, handbags, jackets, and suits and the store receives new items daily. “ I like my customers more than anything” said Heather, “I love the fact that my customers have the opportunity to make some money from their clothes rather than them going to landfills.”

Heather definitely experiences a symbiotic relationship with her customers, and it is not uncommon to see her staying open past her 5 pm closing time if there are people still interested in shopping through the many racks of clothing that fill her store. It is also often that Mrs. Ricketts pulls clothes off of the racks to give to any number of charity organizations. “Any product we have that does not sell we donate to charity.” Heather told me, “Currently we have given to the EVSC clothing bank, Ft. Campbell for soldiers and their families, different church clothing banks, as well as the victims of hurricane Katrina and the 2006 tornado that ripped through the tri-state area. Lately, we have been donating quite a bit to the Rescue Mission. It feels great to help and give back to those in need.”

Heather’s consignment shop is rated one of Evanville’s favorite consignment shops. This serves as not only a huge compliment but as a testament to the way Heather runs her business and treats those that shop in her store. In the past Heather has held fashion shows with the clothes from her store as well as other fun promotions. The best way to stay on top of these events is by checking in and liking 2nd Hand Chic’s Facebook page. The store also runs sales off of the Facebook page in the “mention this post” style as well as updates to new products the store receives. The store is currently having a sale on all winter products. 2nd Hand Chic’s store hours are Tuesday – Friday 10-5, and Saturday 11-3. The store is closed Sunday and Monday.
