Bucshon votes to stop IRS abuse of taxpayers

23

220px-Larry_Bucshon,_official_portrait,_112th_Congress

Washington, DC) – This week, Congressman Larry Bucshon, a physician from Southern Indiana, joined his colleagues in the House to pass measures that protect hardworking taxpayers from government overreach. Three of the bills were specific to protecting taxpayers from recent overreach by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  These measures are part of a larger package of bills related to “Stop Government Abuse Week.”

Bucshon released the following statement regarding his votes:

“As an American taxpayer, I have serious concerns about a government agency, like the IRS, actively working to silence the free speech of citizens.  Our Founders established a government that works for the people, not the reverse, and it is my Constitutional duty to hold this Administration accountable for its abuse of power.

“Dealing with the IRS is already an unnerving experience for many Americans, and their recent actions have only reaffirmed public distrust of the agency.  These bills put the taxpayer back in control by reinforcing their rights, increasing transparency, and instituting aggressive Congressional oversight of IRS-taxpayer interaction.”

BACKGROUND:

In response to a large number of IRS scandals, three bills passed out of the House this week enumerate a basic Taxpayer Bill of Rights, and prescribe how the IRS should interact with taxpayers moving forward.

1.  H.R. 2530, the Taxpayer Transparency and Efficient Audit Act improves IRS transparency and accountability during the audit process. Specifically, H.R. 2530 requires the IRS to:
·   Provide a substantive written response to any taxpayer who corresponds with the agency within 30 days.
·   Provide pertinent information to any taxpayer whom the agency discloses personal information about to any federal, state, or local agency/government.
·   Conduct and conclude an audit of an individual’s tax return in no longer than 1 year.

2.       H.R. 2531, the Protecting Taxpayers from Intrusive IRS Requests Act prohibits the IRS from requesting information regarding taxpayers’ religious, political, or social beliefs, protecting their First Amendment Rights.
3.       H.R. 3865, the Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act of 2014 prohibits the IRS from finalizing proposed 501(c)(4) regulations, that have been directed at the Administrations critics,  for one year so that the House Committee on Ways and Means can complete its investigation and process the 23,000 public comments.
In August of last year, Bucshon joined the House to pass a package of bills that empower citizens and stop government abuses that threaten our economy as a part of “Stop Government Abuse Week.” The measures address issues ranging from unfair taxpayer funded bonuses, citizens’ rights when dealing with federal regulatory officials, and more. More information can be found here - http://bucshon.house.gov/press-release/dr-bucshon-votes-stop-government-abuse.

STATEHOUSE – House Bill (HB) 1286 authored by State Representative Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) has now passed out of both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly.

HB 1286 requires the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), the Indiana Finance Authority and Purdue University to provide annual reports to the Joint Study Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Assessment and Solutions regarding the condition of Indiana’s transportation network and infrastructure.

“As the Crossroads of America, we need to continue setting a precedence of high standards and constant improvement for our roads and bridges and everything in between. This legislation will help us continue improving Indiana’s transportation systems,” said Rep. Sullivan.

“The timely, detailed, relevant data gathered from these reports will greatly help the study committee make headway on their endeavors over the interim. Having a top-notch infrastructure system leads to job creation, economic development, and much more.”

The annual reports will be submitted by August 1 of 2014 and 2015.

This legislation is effective immediately upon enactment.

Bill to speed abandoned property sales moves to House

By Allie Nash

TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS – Those looking to invest in abandoned housing could enjoy a faster process under a bill approved by the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee.

Senate Bill 422 would let buyers take ownership of homes that had been deemed by a judge to be abandoned as soon as a tax sale is finished. Current law requires buyers to wait a year, during which time the previous owner can pay back taxes and redeem the property.

State Rep. Justin Moed, D-Indianapolis, said that’s meant in part to stop investors from buying properties in hopes that the owner will pay the back taxes – along with required interest – to the bidder.

“This is the best way to ensure these properties end up in the hands of people who want to fix them,” Moed said. “It’s a fast track sales process for abandoned properties.”

The bill also requires out-of-state investors to register as Indiana companies to bid at tax sales. Wayne Greeson, an attorney representing out-of-state investors, said that’s a problem.

“Indiana is a favorable state for investors, especially for those out of state, and this bill will hurt that,” Gresson said.

But others were in favor of this bill, saying that Hoosiers will benefit.

The bill passed the committee unanimously.

EPD PATCH 2012
Grant to support safety education and training programs

The Evansville Police Department Foundation (EPDF), a non-profit created to support the Evansville Police Department, today announced it has received $10,000 as part of the Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety and Security Institute. The Motorola Solutions Foundation is the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions Inc. Through the grant, EPDF will be able to fund three Citizen’s Academies in 2014. The academies provide members of the public an opportunity to learn safety and gives an overall education about the department.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Grants support safety education and training programs for first responders, their families and the general public in the United States and Canada.

“This grant allows the department to continue and expand our Citizen’s Academies to further our strategy to partner with our community,” Said Chief Billy Bolin.

The department will offer a Spring and Fall Academy, as well as a Traveling Citizen’s Academy that will be offered in the Summer at a location in the community. The academy generally will be offered for 10 weeks, one night per week for approximately 3 hours. There will be safety presentations, as well as presentations by members of almost every area of the department, including Crime Scene, Narcotics, SWAT, Sex Crimes Investigation, Homicide Investigations and K-9. There will also be self-defense tips and a round table discussion with the Police Chief, Mayor and Prosecutor on graduation night. The next scheduled academy begins March 18th and continues through May, 20, 2013. Contact Training Specialist Debbie Baird to reserve a spot at 436-4948 or dbaird@evansvillepolice.com .

“Motorola Solutions is dedicated to helping people be their best in the moments that matter,” said Matt Blakely, director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “The Motorola Solutions Foundation aligns itself with this mission by supporting programs like the Evansville Police Department Foundation that train people how to respond to potential safety problems or recover from the loss of a first responder. We are proud to see these valuable programs make a positive impact in the communities where we live and work, such as Evansville.”
