New online learning service offers free courses to Library cardholders

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library has introduced a new service that gives customers access to hundreds of online courses.  How much does it cost to enroll?  Courses are free with a Library card.

 

Learn4Life offers library users hundreds of online courses covering everything from health and wellness to creative writing, computer programming, GED test preparation and much more.  Some courses may even earn LEU/CEU credits.  Learn4Life courses are developed by expert instructors, many currently working at universities around the country.

 

“Part of our mission at the EVPL is to create experiences for lifelong learning,” said Amy Mangold, Community Relations and Development Officer for the EVPL.  “With Learn4Life online courses, our customers will be able to enroll in courses covering all types of topics and subjects.  Whether someone is considering taking a class to enhance a skill for their job or is just interested in digital photography, the Learn4Life course catalog offers something for everyone.”

 

Courses run for six weeks with new sessions beginning every month.  Courses are taken entirely online with comprehensive lessons, quizzes, and assignments.  A dedicated professional instructor coordinates every course by pacing learners, answering questions, giving feedback, and facilitating discussions.

The St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital Foundation will hold its 21st Annual Gala on Friday, March 7th, 2014 at the St. Mary’s Manor Auditorium. The event begins with a cocktail reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7:00 p.m.

IS IT TRUE that some of the bars of Evansville have already exercised the rights granted back to them by the Indiana Supreme Court by its determination that the City of Evansville passed a resolution that violated the constitution with a smoking ban that allowed an exemption for the Casino?…one of those bars is the popular watering hole in downtown Evansville called the Peephole?…the owner who many of us know as a good person who is a pleasure to be around even claims to have polled his customers and to have roughly a 2 to 1 majority expressing a desire for the Peephole to be a smoking bar once again?…the comments beneath his announcement on the Peephole’s Facebook page are more tilted the other way with well over a hundred patrons posted kind words followed by “I will not be back if you start allowing smoking again” or something to that effect?…if the comments are an indication of things to come the Peephole is about to lose a boatload of customers over the decision to allow smoking again but who knows, maybe there are enough smokers to make up for the losses?…time will tell?

IS IT TRUE among the bars in Evansville that have decided to remain smoke free are the Lamasco Bar & Grill, KC’s Timeout Lounge, Doc’s, Phoenix Night Club, Bokeh Lounge and Jimtown Bar?…the ruling by the Supreme Court which the CCO believes was the correct ruling has added a bit of chaos to the City of Evansville on top of the chaos that already rules the place with all of the delays and uncertainties associated with the 5 ½ years of delays of four golden shovel events for a new downtown convention hotel?…the real kicker with the negation of the “split the baby” smoking ban is the fact that the pro-forma estimates of the room rates and occupancy rates of the badly wanted downtown convention hotel just got negated too?…it has been widely publicized in Indianapolis that a smoking ban and only a smoking ban revitalized their convention business?…the biggest assertions on a need for a convention hotel in Evansville are all about the many conventions that will come if only we build a hotel?…if a 1,005 room 4-Star hotel did not help Indianapolis’s convention business without a smoking ban, one would have to be smoking some medicinal marijuana to believe a 256 room Doubletree would help Evansville’s prospects for conventions with people puffing away all over the place?…whatever considerations have been given to the projections for the vapor hotel will need to be revisited with less conventions in the mix?

IS IT TRUE the University of Evansville Aces rushed out to a 25 point lead over Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State last night before losing the entire lead and going into overtime?…the good news is that the Aces won the game by 6 points and the bad news is that the student section had exactly 5 people sitting in it during the second half?…the same delusion that thinks some bricks will draw conventions was on steroids when community leaders convinced themselves that a new arena would bring back the crowds for basketball?…GROUPTHINK sessions are some of the most dangerous and delusional places to make decisions?…WINNING SELLS TICKETS and always has?…as we have said many times if UE wins 25 games a year for several years in a row the crowds will be back whether they play in Ford Center, a pole barn, or an empty field?

IS IT TRUE Mayor Winnecke and City Council President John Friend are working together for once to search for a solution to the stricken down “split the baby” smoking ban?…it seems as though they both understand the gravity of the situation of either losing boat money with a comprehensive ban or seeing the prospects for conventions (other than tobacco peddlers conventions) vaporize before a golden shovel event?…the choices are stark and they are the elected leaders who have to choose?…Mayor Winnecke has always been a vocal advocate for banning smoking but is now sounding a bit wishy-washy?…Councilman Friend has always been an advocate for one set of rules for all even when he was casting a YES vote for the “split the baby” resolution?…the bottom line here is these guys have to make a choice and stick with it?…behind door number one is the status quo as of 2006 and a happy riverboat?…behind door number two is a convention hotel and a non-smoking town?…both choices are constitutional but “splitting the baby” is not?…it will be interesting to watch these two elected leaders who fought like the dickens to hold these jobs reach a decision?

IS IT TRUE there is one more uncertainty that may just hurt like the dickens?…that is the question of “would you put a medical school in a smoking zone?”

Federal ruling in Kentucky casts doubt on marriage amendment in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – A federal judge in Kentucky ruled Wednesday that the commonwealth must recognize same-sex marriages performed in another state, striking down a constitutional amendment similar to one under consideration in Indiana.

The 2004 amendment to the Kentucky Constitution restricted recognized marriages to those between a man and a woman. U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn said that violates the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law.

“It is clear that Kentucky’s laws treat gay and lesbian persons differently in a way that demeans them,” Heyburn said in his ruling. But the decision did not say Kentucky must allow same-sex marriages to be performed in the state.

The decision is the latest in a series of federal court rulings that raise questions about whether Indiana’s proposed amendment could withstand a challenge. Indiana’s proposal defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman, mirroring existing state law.

House Joint Resolution 3 has passed the Indiana House and is under consideration in the Senate. If it passes as currently written, it would need approval from the General Assembly again in 2015 or 2016 before it could go on the ballot for ratification in 2016.

But some of the amendment’s opponents say the proposal would buck national trends – and the recent court rulings.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman and left it up to states to make decisions about the definition of a legal marriage.

But then last month, a federal court ruled that an amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution banning same-sex marriage violates the U.S. Constitution. That ruling came one week after a similar ruling was made on a same-sex marriage ban in Utah.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence, who supports the Indiana amendment, declined through a spokeswoman to comment on the Kentucky decision.

Rep. Matt Pierce, D-Bloomington, said Wednesday that it’s “just one more piece of evidence that the attempts to pass this amendment here is just a futile attempt to hold back the tide of history.”

Pierce said he did not think Wednesday’s ruling would have any effect on Indiana’s marriage battle this year, but he hoped this would be the last time the issue was brought before the General Assembly.

“I think they’re kind of stuck following through with the monster they’ve created, but I would not be surprised if, in the next two years, they just have better things to do,” he said.

Amendments to HJR 3 will be considered in the Senate as early as Thursday.

Pence pitches preschool to Senate committee

INDIANAPOLIS – Gov. Mike Pence told a Senate committee Wednesday that he is determined to create a state-funded preschool program for the state’s lowest-income families.

In his first-ever testimony before a state legislative committee, Pence said he supports House Bill 1004, which creates a pilot preschool voucher program.

“I believe the time has come for a voluntary pre-K program to help Indiana’s low income kids,” the Republican governor said.

Under House Bill 1004, authored by Rep. Bob Behning, R-Indianapolis, children who are 4 year old, have a family income less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level, and live in one of five counties selected to test the program.

The Senate Education Committee heard testimony on the proposal Wednesday but postponed a vote. The committee is expected to consider changes.

Already, Senate fiscal leaders have expressed concerns about the cost of the program. The bill includes no funding and Senate Appropriations Chairman Luke Kenley – who also serves on the education committee – has said it shouldn’t be considered until next year, when lawmakers are writing the next two-year budget.

Also, some senators say they’re concerned that – under the House bill – students who participate in the pre-kindergarten program would get automatic entry into the state’s voucher program, which uses state money to pay private school tuition for lower-income children.

Currently, students have to try public school first – unless they have a sibling in the program or would otherwise attend a failing school.

Indiana is currently one of only 10 states that does not offer some state funding for pre-K education.

Pence said every child deserves to start school ready to learn.

“We owe it to all of our children, especially the least of these, to see to it that they’re able to start school ready to succeed,” Pence said. “And I’m determined to work personally, with each of you, to advance educational opportunities for all the children of Indiana.”

Indiana State Police Warn Parents about Candy Laced with THC

Indiana State Police want to warn parents that troopers and area police are finding candy laced with Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in Southwest Indiana. THC is the chemical compound found in marijuana that provides a “high” to the user. Most of the candy found by troopers resembles suckers, hard-rock candy and gummy worms and bears. These candies look so much like regular candy that children or even adults wouldn’t hesitate to consume them. Indiana State Police encourage parents to inspect their children’s candy and be suspicious of unwrapped or re-wrapped candy in unfamiliar packaging.
