Do you know the dangers of C-Diff Colitis Infection?

During the week of March 4th, HealthSouth Deaconess Rehab Hospital will participate with the Indiana Hospital Association to observe

Patient Safety Awareness Week and honor a statewide commitment to collectively work together as a health care community to provide the safest care possible.

Patient Safety Awareness Week is an annual education and awareness campaign for health care safety led by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF).

Among the events and activities planned this week, on Thursday March 6th at 12:00pm in Conference Room A&B, Linda Doerflein, RN, Director of Quality and Risk and Melanie Greener, RN, Infection Control and Employee Health Practitioner, will present information on a topic that is becoming an issue within the hospital environment. C-Diff or Clostridium difficile is an intestinal bacterial infection that is most commonly caused by prolonged use of antibiotics. This severe illness causes severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and potential intestinal perforation and death. The spores from C-Diff can remain on surfaces for us up FIVE MONTHS if not disinfected properly. The infection’s occurrence has significantly increased over recent years and more education to patients and healthcare workers is much needed.

RSVPs are required (see below), but there are still seats available. A boxed lunch is provided.

Other highlighted activities this week are a Safety Bingo for patients and families on Thursday evening, and a virtual reality fire training provided by Koorsen, and the Red Cross provided Heimlich maneuver training simulation on Tuesday.

This is a week to recognize the advancements that have been made in the patient safety arena, while acknowledging the challenges that remain—and committing to work on them, every day.

INDIANAPOLIS – Instead of making a tragic mistake behind the wheel, Indiana high school and college students are being encouraged to put their smartphones to good use by urging others to “Drive Now. TXT L8R”.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana Department of Labor, Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana State Police have partnered to award $5,000 scholarships to students who compose the most creative and viral social media posts on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.

Keeping one’s hands on the wheel and eyes on the road is not just a safe driving practice – it’s the law. The majority of text message citations and warnings issued by Indiana State Police in 2013 have been for drivers under age 30.

Students may register their public Twitter accounts and read contest rules at www.txtl8r.in.gov. Entries must be posted during April, which is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and use the hashtag #TXTL8RIN. Social media posts that are composed while driving will be disqualified.

High school and college entries will be awarded separately, and up to three students may work together on the same social media account. The state will deposit $5,000 into the 529 college savings plans for the winners of five categories:

1. Twitter – most tweets, retweets and favorites
2. Vine – most likes
3. Vine – most creative
4. Instagram – most likes
5. Instagram – most creative

House sends industrial hemp bill back to Senate

hemp

By Lesley Weidenbener
TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS – The House approved a bill Monday that would allow farmers to grow hemp – a non-hallucinogenic cousin of marijuana – if the federal government lifts restrictions on the crop.

Senate Bill 357 passed 93-4 and moves back to the Senate where it has already passed. The Senate can now accept the changes made by the House or send it to a conference committee for further consideration.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Ed Clere, R-New Albany, said hemp has more than 25,000 different uses. It’s used to make textiles, rope, medicines and other products.

But Clere said the hemp is not a plant that people can use to get high.

“This is not a marijuana bill,” Clere said. “That’s a discussion for another day. This is a discussion about agriculture.”

Industrial hemp production is still not authorized by federal law. But the farm bill passed recently by Congress would allow universities and agriculture departments to research it in states where lawmakers have legalized it. The goal would be that commercial production could follow later.

Hemp can be harvested just 120 days after planting and it doesn’t require any particular climate to grow. It is a hardy plant and naturally resistant to pests, eliminating the need for pesticides and herbicides, supporters say.

Southern Indiana produced industrial hemp rope as part of the war effort during World War II when the United States encouraged all farmers to grow hemp. However, the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 lumped industrial hemp with marijuana and outlawed production of either, despite their differences.

Justices remove Judge Kimberly Brown from bench

IL Staff for www.theindianalawyer.com

The Indiana Supreme Court Tuesday afternoon removed Marion Superior Judge Kimberly Brown from the bench. Brown had been onpaid suspension since Jan. 9 pending final discipline.

A panel of special masters found that the Judicial Qualifications Commission proved more than 80 rule violations by Brown on 46 of 47 charges. She was accused of wrongful detention of at least nine criminal defendants, failing to properly oversee her court, improperly supervising trials, failing to act on Indiana Court of Appeals orders, showing hostility toward parties who came before her, and retaliating against court staff who complained.

Justice Robert Rucker concurred in part, agreeing that Brown should be removed, but not immediately.

ST. MARY’S TO OFFER FREE BALANCE SCREENINGS

0

st. marys logo

St. Mary’s Rehabilitation will offer FREE balance screenings Wednesday, April 9th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Washington Square Mall, in the rear St. Mary’s entrance.

Among the older population, falls are the leading cause of trauma admissions and injuries.  A decreased sense of balance is a common risk factor for falling.  The balance screening focuses on assessing balance and identifying factors that may decrease balance and potentially lead to falls. Participants will also have the opportunity to review their medication list with a St. Mary’s pharmacist.

The event is free and open to the public, but an appointment time is requested. Participants are encouraged to reserve a spot by March 31st.  Please call 812-485-5209 to schedule a screening time.

The University of Evansville Physical Therapy Department, University of Southern Indiana Occupational Therapy Department, St. Mary’s Durable Medical Equipment, the YMCA, St. Mary’s Wellness Center, and others will also have information on balance and other health topics available at the event.
