During World War II, Evansville went hard to work to serve the cause of Freedom. With a workforce of nearly 20,000 people, Evansville became the largest inland producer of Tank Landing Ships, or LST’s. Currently, Evansville is privileged to be the home to the very last operational ship that ‘won the war’: the LST-325.

I say ‘currently’ because that might not always be the case. From time to time, other cities have attempted to lure our pride from our city.  So far, the board of the LST has always loyally turned down these other offers. However, if our city leadership continues to ignore the importance of having the last operational LST, of having a living piece of our history, we cannot expect the offers to always be refused.

Later this month, British film makers will be arriving in our city to film the LST for their documentary on ‘Operation Torch’. This will undoubtedly spur another round of interest by other cities and result in more attempts to claim our ship as their own.

I applaud the resolution introduced by council woman Brinkerhoff-Riley and passed by Evansville Council in January, but this is just not enough.

To begin with, many feel that the current location is completely unacceptable. The city of Evansville needs to find a more suitable port of harbor for our ship so that we may put our history on display with pride.

We have the great potential to bring in even more money and tourism if we move the LST to an area in which we can modify specifically to boast of our history. The Mead Johnson terminal at the port of Evansville is just one such place.

There, we would find a suitable area to establish the WWII museum, which would accent the contributions of Evansville to the war effort. Plenty of space for retailers exists that would provide for visitors, and there is an ample amount of parking areas. We could even have the old crane that was the last one to load LSTs to sit proudly by the very last LST.

As added bonus, the Greenway could be expanded even further westward, and the added tourism could do more to revitalize the downtown area than some of the current plans that have been considered.

Visiting veterans and their families will be able find more desirable surroundings, more services, and actually be encouraged to spend more time (and money) in our city.

Sadly, some feel that it is more important to allow the LST to sit in stagnant waters, finding funding for less important projects than to actually act. I encourage the city to fight as fiercely to protect our ship, as the men who fought fiercely aboard these ships did to protect our nation, and to find the funding needed to make the necessary moves.  After all, what is more important than preserving the little bit our history that we have left?

Hamilton County, IN- A rental scam utilizing Craigslist has reared its ugly head once again in central Indiana and the State Police want to warn the public to be mindful of their dealings.

On February 21st, a Plainfield, Indiana resident answered a Craigslist posting for a rental home in Noblesville, Indiana.

The interested party inquired if the home was still available and she received an E-mail from Irene Parrish that it was and asked for the woman to fill out an application form. The woman completed the application and received an E-mail from Parrish that she was now residing in Inglewood, California and needed the victim to wire $1,900.00 to her via Moneygram. The $1,900.00 was to cover the $950.00 rent for the house and a $950.00 refundable deposit. The victim wired the money from a CVS store in Noblesville.

On Saturday, February 22nd, the victim received another E-mail from Parrish telling her that she needed another $950.00 for an extra month’s rent. The victim refused Parrish’s request informing her that she had already sent $1,900.00 and had not received the keys to the house.

The victim never received keys to the house found out later that the house was actually sold by a Reality Company that had their sign in the yard one week prior to the Craigslist posting.

IS IT TRUE March 6, 2014

Mole #??
Mole #??

IS IT TRUE that the City County Observer recorded a record 30,190 pageviews from 16,412 unique viewers yesterday?…we are somewhat astounded by what a viral FB posting did for our traffic?…we encourage our readers to post our articles on your Facebook pages when you want to help broadcast our content?…no campaign or amount of money could have driven this much traffic this fast?…if the Courier and Press had an average internet traffic day yesterday (according to statshow estimates) then March 5, 2014 will go down as the first day that the CCO exceeded the CP in pageviews, visits, and unique visitors?…we thank all of our readers who helped to make this possible?

IS IT TRUE some of our readers went deep and technical combing through the 2011 audit of the Evansville Bond Bank yesterday as though it was one of the gospels?…the point of posting the audit was to call for an investigation of when Earthcare Energy LLC was introduced to Evansville as an attraction candidate worthy of a $5 Million loan?…what is needed badly to understand how this city is still legally poised to write a check for $4.8 Million to a group that never showed a business plan, lied about a patent, failed to apply for a DOE loan after finding out there was no such thing, and in two years still has not installed a single evaluation unit into a real world situation is to KNOW WHO BROUGHT THIS TRAVELLING ECONOMIC SALVATION SHOW TO TOWN IN THE FIRST PLACE AND WHO SHEPARDED THEM AROUND TOWN INTRODUCING THEM TO THE POWER BROKERS, AND WHO WAS TWISTING THE ARMS OF THE CITY COUNCIL TO GET THE 5 VOTES NEEDED TO AUTHORIZE THE LOAN?…until we know these things, Evansville is vulnerable that this kind of thing will happen again?

IS IT TRUE we have railed at the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in these pages on several occasions?…yesterday President Obama used his pen to push the implementation of this fraudulently passed and haphazardly executed law for most people into 2017?…that will be after he is out of office making $1 Million speeches and someone else is President of the United States?…there will be no cancellations of policies this coming October to anger voters at the Democrats who supported this law?…there won’t even be such things happening during the presidential election in 2015?…yesterday’s latest politically driven delay was for all of the wrong reasons but it may have just fumbled and bumbled into a place that has the potential to improve the overall American healthcare system if bipartisan cooperation refines the law and effective implementers are put in charge for the next 3 years?…we must remind you that if the ACA had delivered the program that President Obama sold us he would be an instant legend today?…this is an exercise in how not to do anything at all?…a lie with promises of unrealistic results followed by flat out ineptness in execution is not how this country was built?…in spite of that there is a good opportunity to thread the needle and end up with something much better?

IS IT TRUE that today for the first time in American history young people who are prone to be in entry level jobs without insurance can stay on their parents plan until they are 26 years old?…that is good and it came from the ACA?…for the first time in American history there is no such thing as an uninsurable person since the Obamacare exchange will accept people with even the most expensive conditions?…that came from the ACA and it is good public policy?…today there is still the opportunity to have a free market for both insurance and healthcare that is not subject to government control?…that came from the delay of the ACA and this is good?…our leaders seem to have bumbled and delayed us into a situation where everyone can get the insurance they choose at a market driven price?…it will be interesting to see if the Republicans will apply their business skills to the shortcomings of what is now in place to make it work?…that may just be as simple as opening up Medicare to the sick and the poor at a price they can afford and letting the 26 year old provision stand?…quite frankly if anyone else prefers to opt in to Medicare and pay the premiums that would have to compete with the free market for their dollars that would be fine too?…we seem to have really pulled a Forrest Gump here in bumbling to the doorstep of a very good system?…we hope our leaders take us across the finish line with crisp implementation?

IS IT TRUE if you wonder why many of our city streets weren’t cleared during our last snow event was because the City of Evansville Street Department ran out of salt?…we hear that the City of Evansville ran out of road salt about 2 weeks ago?

IS IT TRUE last night the Vanderburgh County Republican Party Chairman Wayne Parke posted remarks in yesterday “IS IT TRUE-Part 2″article that caught our attention regarding his endorsement and financial support of two different incumbents (Abell & Swaim) over their primary challengers?…we wonder if you agree that the Chairmen of Vanderburgh County party should openly endorse any candidate running in a contested primary election?

Sen. Becker’s Bill to Study Drug Abuse Among Pregnant Women Passes House

3

Becker_2012_tn

State Sen. Vaneta Becker’s (R-Evansville) bill to encourage better reporting of infant health problems caused by drug abuse during pregnancy unanimously passed the House of Representatives Monday by a 98-0 vote.

Drug-related health problems in newborns, known as neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), can arise when mothers abuse drugs while pregnant. NAS can cause infants to experience drug dependency, seizures, slow weight gain and many other symptoms.

Senate Bill 408 would task the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) with facilitating study and collaboration among medical experts in order to determine best practices for identifying and reporting NAS cases.

“Drug abuse during pregnancy is a serious public health concern, and the trend is rising. Without accurate reporting and conversation about the terrible effects of NAS in newborns, we cannot hope to curb this behavior,” Becker said. “Monitoring NAS cases will give us better context for discussion, and help doctors treat and protect newborns.”

According to the Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force, the overall rate of newborns being diagnosed with NAS has tripled over the past decade. In 2009, approximately one infant born per hour in the United States had signs of drug withdrawal.

Becker said the frequency of NAS cases appears to be growing in Indiana, too. During testimony in a House committee, Dr. Maria Del Rio Hoover of St. Mary’s Health System said physicians throughout the state are seeing an increase in NAS cases among their patients.

SB 408 now returns to the Senate with amendments.

More Bad News for Vitamin Supplements: Vitamin E and Selenium Increase Prostate Cancer Risk

2

Dr. Arnold

By

Roy M. Arnold, MD

On the heels of a study showing no beneficial effect of multivitamin supplements on cancer, stroke or heart disease1, a new study published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute2 showed  not only no benefit in preventing prostate cancer, but also an increase in prostate cancer in certain men. The study, known as the SELECT trial looked at 35,000 men who were randomized to receive either Vitamin E 400IU daily, Selenium 200micrograms daily, both or neither. The Study which began in 2001 was initially scheduled to run 12 years but was stopped in 2008, because no benefit was apparent. The participants were followed thereafter and analysis actually showed that both Vitamin E and Selenium actually increased risk of prostate cancer. In the case of Vitamin E, the risk increased 17% over controls. The increase seen with Selenium was somewhat smaller.

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient found in foods such as vegetables, vegetable oils, nuts, and egg yolks. Selenium is a trace element found in rice, wheat, and Brazil nuts, and in seafood and meat. Both substances are considered to be antioxidants.

Furthermore, the men who already had high levels of Selenium at the beginning of the trial and who received Selenium experienced a 91% increase in high grade prostate cancers. Those with low Selenium levels who received only Vitamin E also experienced a statistically significant increase in prostate cancer.

Selenium occurs naturally in the environment and can be concentrated from agricultural runoff by aquatic species. In certain regions of the US, consumption of wild game meat has led to toxic levels in humans.

The authors of the NCI Journal study state, “that effects of supplementation are dependent upon the nutrient status of the target population, such that supplementation of populations with adequate nutrient status, leading to supraphysiological exposure, has either no effect or increases cancer risk…” The authors also state, “These new results are consistent with the medical literature on supplements and cancer. The message is that nothing good is gained in healthy people.”

Lest one think that I am totally against supplements and vitamins, bear in mind that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend supplemental folic acid for all women of childbearing age because of its usefulness in preventing certain types of birth defects. The CDC’s 2012 report on Nutritional status found that certain populations, most notably African-Americans, Hispanics and the elderly have a high prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency.

Dr. Edgar Miller, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore and an author of an accompanying editorial to the study published in December has been quoted as saying, “The ‘stop wasting your money’ means that perhaps you’re spending money on things that won’t protect you long term. What will protect you is if you spend the money on fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, low fat dairy, things like that… and exercising would probably be a better use of the money.”

As with anything you read in print, it is important to discuss this matter with your primary healthcare provider before changing anything.

Bucshon released the following statement regarding the President’s released budget:

4

220px-Larry_Bucshon,_official_portrait,_112th_Congress

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Larry Bucshon, a physician from Southern Indiana, released the following statement regarding President Obama’s budget request for FY 2015 that requests further increases in taxes, spending, and borrowing.

Bucshon released the following statement regarding the President’s released budget:

“The President’s budget represents another failure for American families – it is merely a political framework that fails to address the serious challenges we face as a nation. With his budget, the President asks hardworking Hoosiers to foot the bill for more Washington spending, significantly weakens our national defense, and does nothing to ensure our entitlement programs are still around for future generations.

“The House will once again present a budget to the American people that tackles the real drivers of our debt, grows the economy, and helps Hoosiers take home more of their pay. These solutions, not a campaign brochure, will make life easier for everyone.”

The President’s budget is one month past the statutory deadline representing the fifth time in six years that he has missed this deadline, the worst record in history. Furthermore, his budget was released without pertinent information including analytical perspectives, historical tables, and economic assumptions that are generally included and are a part of the discussion. According to the Washington Post, based on the White House assumptions, that were not released, “If the budgeteers get GDP growth wrong, just about everything else will be wrong, too, from the abundance of tax revenue to the size of the budget deficit” (Washington Post; 3/4/14).

At this point, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has made it clear that he has no intention of presenting a budget proposal. This will be the fourth time in the last five years the Senate has failed to meet their budget obligation and is an attempt by Reid to shield his members from taking a tough vote before the 2014 midterm election.

BACKGROUND:

Spending Surges

  • We’re not in an “era of austerity.” Since 2009, the debt has gone up $6.8 trillion and spending has totaled $17.6 trillion.
  • The President’s budget increases spending by $791 billion over the budget window and by $56 billion in 2015 above the Murray–Ryan spending agreement that he signed into law just two months ago.
  • His budget will increase total spending by 63 percent from today’s levels over the budget window.

Debt Explodes

  • President Obama’s budget never balances—ever.
  • It would add $8.3 trillion to the debt over the budget window.
