BASEBALL ACES BLAST PRIVATEERS, 18-4, IN SERIES FINALE

NEW ORLEANS, La. –  The University of Evansville baseball team exploded for 18 runs on 21 hits on Sunday, including five home runs, as the visiting Purple Aces posted an 18-4 mercy-rule victory over the homestanding University of New Orleans Privateers at Maestri Field in New Orleans.

“For us to win on ‘getaway day’ was important today, after yesterday’s tough loss,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll.  “We had a great overall effort offensively today, and I thought that we did a good job of handing the ball off to each other on the mound:  Kevin Reed getting us through four, and then what we got out of Shane Harris was pretty special today.  And, to be able to get Jace Kressin and Ethan Bell out there was important for us as well.

“Big turnaround here on Wednesday, with us going to Vanderbilt.  We still have some things that we are working on, so Wednesday will be a big test for us.”

After scoring only two runs through 10 innings on Saturday, Evansville scored three runs through its first 10 batters on Sunday to grab an early 3-0 lead.  Senior shortstop Simon Scherry produced a two-out RBI single in the first inning to begin the scoring, and freshman catcher Kaleb Wilkey bounced an RBI ground out before graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger drove an RBI single to right field to give UE a 3-0 cushion.

UNO would answer back with a four-run second inning thanks to a pair of home runs, but UE would respond with two home runs of its own in the third inning to set the tone for the day.  Senior first baseman Kip Fougerousse launched a solo home run to tie the game at 4-4 in the third inning, before junior outfielder Harrison Taubert added a solo shot two batters later to give UE a lead it would never lose.

Evansville broke things open in the fifth inning, plating seven runs in the frame to push the lead to 12-4, highlighted by an RBI single by junior outfielder Ty Rumsey and a 400-foot grand slam to left field by graduate third baseman Brent Widder.

Junior second baseman Cal McGinnis added a solo home run to right field in the seventh inning to push the lead to 13-4.  UE would then score five more runs in the eighth inning to invoke the mercy rule.  Shallenberger launched an opposite-field solo home run to begin the scoring, before freshman infielder Brodie Peart came through with a pinch-hit two-run double for his first collegiate hit.  A sacrifice fly by Taubert and an RBI double on the infield by Rumsey that landing between three infielders in front of the mound capped the scoring.

Rumsey led UE’s 21-hit attack by going 4-for-5.  Both Shallenberger and Taubert finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, while Widder went 3-for-5 with the grand slam, three runs scored and four RBI.  Eight of the nine UE starters produced hits on the day, with eight of the nine starters also driving in runs.

On the mound, senior reliever Shane Harris (1-1) earned the victory with two perfect innings of relief work.  Graduate reliever Jace Kressin and redshirt sophomore hurler Ethan Bell also worked perfect innings each while combining to strike out five men.

With the victory, Evansville moves to 4-3 on the season.  The Purple Aces will now travel to Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday night for a showdown with #6 Vanderbilt.  First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday’s game can be seen live on the SE

Parson, Kapust propel Eagles to 3-1 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball senior catcher Tyler Kapust (Sellersburg, Indiana) and freshman right-hander Grant Parson (Owensboro, Kentucky) propelled the Screaming Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Eastern Michigan University Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 2-5 to start the season, while EMU also is 2-5.
 
For the first time in the series, USI got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second off a two-run single by Kapust. Freshman leftfielder Cameron Boyd (Villa Hills, Kentucky) started the rally by reaching on an error and was followed by junior first baseman Thomas Emerich (Ava, Missouri), who was hit by a pitch, before scoring on Kapust’s two-out, two-run single.
 
After EMU cut the USI advantage to 2-1 in the top of the sixth, USI got the run back in the bottom half to go back up by two, 3-1. Sophomore shortstop Caleb Niehaus (Newburgh, Indiana) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second before stealing third and scoring on a throwing error.
 
On the mound, Parson picked up his first collegiate win in his second start of the year for USI. Parson (1-0) allowed one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out seven in six innings of work.
 
USI freshman right-hander Clayton Weisheit (Ferdinand, Indiana) held the EMU Eagles in check for the final 2.2 frames to post his first collegiate save. Weisheit allowed one hit and struck out three for the save.

Eagles conclude Cocky Classic with Sunday split

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – University of Southern Indiana Softball finished its weekend at the 2024 Cocky Classic in Jacksonville, Alabama on Sunday with a two-game split, falling 7-1 against the University of Southern Mississippi before winning 5-4 against host Jacksonville State University.
 
In the first game against Southern Miss (5-8), both teams cruised through the first couple of innings. Southern Indiana (3-7) had a chance to score in the second and third innings but stranded a runner in scoring position in each frame.
 
The Golden Eagles broke through in the bottom of the third inning with five runs off a pair of RBI doubles and two more RBI knocks. The big inning led to a USI pitching change, as junior starting pitcher Hailey Gotshall (Lucerne, Indiana) handed the ball off to sophomore pitcher Raegan Gibson (Louisville, Kentucky).
 
Southern Indiana got one run back in the top of the fifth on a leadoff home run from sophomore infielder Carlee Effinger (Evansville, Indiana), her first of the season. Despite getting another runner in scoring position, the home run was all USI could get across home plate. The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth and finished off the game from there.
 
Southern Indiana scored one run on five hits, while Southern Miss tallied seven runs on 13 hits. In addition to Effinger’s home run, freshman infielder Sydney Long (Haubstadt, Indiana) went 2-2 at the plate for USI.
 
Gotshall was dealt her first loss this season, allowing five runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Gibson gave up two runs in 2.1 innings of work, while junior pitcher Whitley Hunter (Nashville, Indiana) finished the game for USI with an inning and a third scoreless. The Golden Eagles’ junior pitcher Loganne Stepp moved to 2-1 this season with the win, going five innings with one run surrendered.
 
The second game of the afternoon against Jacksonville State (5-10) was a back-and-forth battle. Southern Indiana jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a bases-loaded walk by senior catcher Sammie Kihega (Greenfield, Indiana). The Gamecocks answered with a tally in the bottom of the second, tying the game 1-1.
 
In the third inning, USI put runners at second and third following a pair of singles and a sacrifice. Junior starting pitcher Josie Newman (Indianapolis, Indiana) was at the plate and put the ball in play, reaching base and scoring both runners on an error by the Jacksonville State shortstop. In the bottom of the third, the Gamecocks responded to tie the game up again, 3-3, on a two-run home run.
 
Southern Indiana took the lead back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Kihega. The Screaming Eagles’ 4-3 advantage was short-lived. Once again, Jacksonville State answered in the home half of the fifth, knotting the game up at four on a sac fly following a one-out triple.
 
The Screaming Eagles were unfazed by the Gamecocks’ multiple comeback efforts. After three consecutive singles to start the top of the sixth inning to load the bases, freshman designated player Alyssa Mumaw (Greenfield, Indiana) put the ball in play and reached on a fielder’s choice to score the go-ahead run for Southern Indiana. From there Newman tossed back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to close out the 5-4 victory for USI.
 
Offensively, USI scored its five runs on 10 hits, receiving multi-hit games from Kihega with two RBIs, seniors Lexi Fair (Greenwood, Indiana) and Mackenzie Bedrick (Brownsburg, Indiana), and a three-hit game for sophomore outfielder Caroline Stapleton (Shirley, Indiana). In the circle, Newman moved to 3-3 on the season with the win, going the full seven innings with four runs allowed. Sunday was Newman’s sixth complete game this season.
 
Jacksonville State scored its four runs off five hits. Junior pitcher Sarah Currie (1-2) suffered the loss for the Gamecocks, giving up two runs off five hits in 4.2 innings of relief.
 
The Screaming Eagles will make their next trip to The Spring Games next weekend in Madeira Beach, Florida. USI will play five games between March 2-5. Video coverage of The Spring Games will be available through FloSoftball.

Second-half run lifts Salukis to 65-53 win

Aces look to rebound on Wednesday

 

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville men’s basketball team held a 26-24 halftime lead, but an 11-0 run by Southern Illinois in the second half keyed a 65-53 win on Sunday at the Ford Center.

Ben Humrichous led the Purple Aces with 11 points and 7 rebounds while Antonio Thomas recorded 10 points on a 4-for-5 shooting effort.  Tanner Cuff scored nine points.  Troy D’Amico led SIU with 17 points.

Yacine Toumi found Antonio Thomas cutting to the basket for the first score of the game.  UE hit its first three shots to take a 6-3 lead before five in a row from SIU saw them take their first lead at 8-6.  Converting five shots in a row, the Salukis opened a 14-8 edge before Chuck Bailey III ended the stretch with a mid-range jumper.

After missing five in a row, the Salukis went on a drought, missing nine in a row as they did not record a field goal for over eight minutes.  Evansville made its way back as Cam Haffner drained a 3-pointer to get UE within one at 14-13.  At the 6:58 mark, Toumi put the Aces back in front at 17-15.

SIU regained a 24-21 edge inside the 3-minute mark before Evansville reeled off the final five tallies to take a 26-24 lead into the break.  Antonio Thomas has the final five points for UE as they rallied back in front.

Back-and-forth action continued in the second half.  Southern Illinois took a 29-28 edge in the first minute while Ben Humrichous countered with a 3-point play to put his team in front at 30-29.  A turning point came with the score tied at 35-35 inside of 16 minutes remaining.  SIU posted 11 in a row to take their largest advantage of the day.

Inside of the 12-minute mark, Humrichous ended the SIU run to get back within single digits.  Tanner Cuff and Bailey each scored as part of an 11-2 run that made it a 48-46 game.  Southern Illinois retook control as they pushed the lead back to double figures at 60-50 inside the final minutes.  Gage Bobe hit a 3-pointer two minutes remaining to get his team within seven, but SIU was able to fend off the challenge to finish with the 65-53 win.

Hitting 21 out of 51 attempts, SIU shot 41.2% while holding the Aces to 37.5%.  The Salukis also finished with a 34-32 rebounding advantage.

Tuesday night will mark Senior Night for UE as they host Indiana State in a 7 p.m. game.

Men’s Swim and Dive broke 12 school records at the conference championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Swimming and Diving squad tackled the four-day Summit League Championships this week in Minneapolis, Minnesota with conference implications on the line. USI broke 12 school records this weekend and placed seventh among the highly competitive field.
 
The inaugural 2022-2023 season ended with both squads placing last place at the Summit League Championships. USI has made tremendous strides in year two of the program’s existence putting together an impressive showing in Minneapolis.
 
Day 1
Wednesday featured the one-meter dive and the two relay events. The Eagles representative for 200 yard medley freestyle relay featured sophomore Garrett Crist (Bargersville, Indiana), freshman Demarkus Darensbourg (Overland Park, Kansas), freshman Cole Baker (Springville, Indiana), and Gabriel Groves (New Carlisle, Indiana) who broke the school record (1:31.40).
 
The Eagles swimmers went two for two breaking records as 800 yard freestyle relay of freshman Sam Smith (Trafalgar, Indiana), sophomore Jack Hannon (Lowell, Indiana), sophomore Creed Loy (Knoxville, Tennessee), and sophomore Connor Harden (Centennial, Colorado) also etched their names in history (6:57.28).
 
USI missed the A-finals in the one-meter event. However, sophomore Lane Pollock (Boonville, Indiana) scored an impressive 250.25. Senior Donnevun Banks (Evansville, Indiana) had a big weekend right behind Pollock with a score of 250.15.
 
Day 2
The men finished day two with three standout performances in freestyle events that all broke school records. Smith got the Eagles going making the finals and recording a blazing 500 yard performance (4:35.12) in the B final. Baker continued to get better as the season progressed with an impressive 50 yard freestyle time (20.79).
 
Moreover, he recorded an even quicker 50 yard freestyle time as the first leg of 200 yard freestyle relay (20.71). The relay team of Baker, Crist, Smith, and Groves teamed up for an epic 200 yard freestyle finish (1:23.42). The Eagles finished day two in seventh within striking distance of Eastern Illinois University and ahead of St. Thomas University.
 
Day 3
Day three brought two school records, 16 different Eagles recording season bests, and the first diver in program history to reach the Summit League A-Finalist.
 
Freshman Camden Richardson (Spring Hill, Tennessee), sophomore Colton Agdeppa (Redding, California), Darensbourg, and Baker snatched the school record in the 400 yard medley relay (3:23.92). Richardson wasn’t done there as the freshman broke another record in the 100 yard backstroke (50.75).
 
Banks had a monster night under the bright lights recording a finals score of 266.35 in the three meter diving event. This score earned Banks a spot on the podium at seventh place.
 
Day 4
The final day came, and the freshman Smith did something no other Eagles swimmer has done at the Summit League championships, qualify as a A-Finalist in the 200 yard butterfly (1:50.35). He later outdid himself with a quicker time (1:49.92).
 
Four additional Eagle records were set in the 1650 yard freestyle event from freshman Alek Bandy (Salem, Illinois) (16:47.97), sophomore Garrett Crist (Bargersville, Indiana) in the 200 yard backstroke (1:52.52), and Baker in the 100 yard freestyle (45.56).
 
The Eagles final relay standout record was Baker, Darensbourg, Smith, and Groves in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:05.05).
