Four Eagles earn All-GLVC softball honors

Four University of Southern Indiana softball players earned All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors as announced by the conference office Thursday evening.

Junior pitcher Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana), sophomore shortstop Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana), and senior Teri Newmaster (Elberfeld, Indiana) were named to the East Division All-GLVC First Team, while junior utility player MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) was named to the East Division’s All-GLVC Second Team.

Harmening had an impressive season in the circle, with a 2.25 ERA and a 14-10 overall record, 9-9 in the GLVC. Her efforts helped the Eagles end the season at fifth in the conference with a team ERA of 2.88. The Whiteland, Indiana, native was third overall with 180 strikeouts in 177.2 innings pitched.

Offensively, Harmening lead the GLVC in doubles (17) and finished the season hitting .326, totaling 46 hits, 16 runs, four homeruns, and 27 RBIs.
Green totaled 53 putouts and 51 assists at shortstop, while on offense, ended the season hitting .350. She had 23 runs off 50 hits with six doubles, two triples, one homerun and 16 runs batted in.

Newmaster, who started 41 games in the outfield, registered 53 putouts, three assists and two errors. She ended the season hitting .322 with 37 hits, 25 runs and four RBIs.

Dorsam was sixth in the conference with a .388 batting averaging and lead the Eagles with 54 hits, 34 runs and 31 RBIs., while also tallying eight doubles, one triple and four homeruns. She earned Player of the Week honors after helping USI to a split with Lewis University and a sweep over University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Dubois, Indiana, native split time between second base, shortstop and behind the plate at catcher, totaling 165 putouts and 65 assists, committing just seven errors all season.

The Screaming Eagles completed their 2014 campaign at 22-23 overall, and 12-22 in GLVC play. As a team, USI ended the season tied for fourth in the conference in team batting average, hitting .283.

American Airlines to Launch Nonstop Jet Service Between Evansville Regional Airport and Charlotte, NC

May 5, 2014 – Evansville Regional Airport officials announced today that American Airlines will begin nonstop jet service between Evansville Regional Airport in Evansville, IN (EVV), and Charlotte, NC’s Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), with three daily flights beginning Oct. 2, 2014.

The regional service will be operated as US Airways Express with 50-seat CRJ-200 jets.

“We have enjoyed a great partnership with American Airlines for many years. This new service to Charlotte, coupled with the combination of US Airways and American Airlines adds yet another dimension to that partnership,” said Airport Executive Director, Doug Joest. “These flights to Charlotte offer our passengers more options for gateways to the national and international air transportation system that is critical to economic development for our region.”

In a short ceremony this morning at EFD Headquarters, Fire Chief Mike Connelly promoted Dan Grimm to the rank of Battalion Chief. Grimm, long time spokesperson for the Department, received his new badge with his wife Barb and several of his peers in attendance. Although Grimm, a 25 year department veteran, has been filling the position temporarily since Cliff Weaver’s appointment as EMA Interim Director, today’s action made it permanent. Grimm will continue in his current roles as Chief Fire Marshal and Admin PIO.

 

EFD has two Battalion Chiefs, which are the highest Merit Rank on the Department. They are Chief of Operations and Chief Fire Marshal.

Indianapolis Justice Center proposals due by end of June

constructionThree groups chosen to design proposals for a Criminal Justice Center on the former General Motors stamping plant site west of downtown Indianapolis will have until the end of June to submit their plans, a city official said Friday.

Indianapolis Director of Enterprise Development David Rosenberg told judges of the Marion Superior Executive Committee the city sent out requests for proposals last week. Development teams have a month to comment or ask questions before the June deadline.

The project envisions a complex costing several hundred million dollars that would combine new facilities for the Marion County Jail, Marion Superior criminal courts and various other court functions.

Judges asked if there were any environmental remediation concerns regarding the former industrial site, and Rosenberg said the RACER Trust, which owns the property, is responsible for any remediation needed to return the property to use.

Rosenberg explained the successful developer will purchase the property from the independent trust that owns the property as the result of GM’s bankruptcy. The trust has an obligation to sell GM’s legacy properties at prices that approximate fair market value.

The successful bidder would arrange financing for the land purchase and construction, and the city would sign a long-term lease for the facility under the plan championed by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Marion County Sheriff John Layton.

The chosen development team also would acquire the balance of the 110-acre site on the west bank of White River south of Washington Street. The Criminal Justice Complex is planned to occupy only about one-third of the western portion of the site.

Officials have said savings realized by eliminating inefficiencies and office rent would fund the project and that no tax increase would be required.

Groups chosen to respond to a request for proposals are:

  • WMB Heartland Justice Partners, led by equity members Meridiam Infrastructure Indy Justice LLC, Balfour Beatty Investments Inc. and Walsh Investors LLC with major non-equity contributions by Walsh Construction Co. II LLC, Heery International Inc., Cofely Services Inc., Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP; and Dewberry Architects.
  • Indy Justice Partners, led by equity members Fengate Capital Management Ltd., AECOM Global Fund I LP and Shiel Sexton Co. Inc., with major contributions by W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co., Tishman Construction Corp. and Johnson Controls. Frost Brown Todd LLC attorneys are non-equity members.

According to the city’s timeline, a favored proposal will be chosen and introduced to the City-County Council in September.
