(WASHINGTON, DC) –Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address to the nation:
“We all learned at a young age that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Yet, the President announced tonight a plan filled with more tax increases to pay for even more spending and growth of the federal government. At the same time, he failed to offer a plan to reduce the mountain of debt that has been placed on the backs of future generations. This speech completely missed the mark. Wages for low- and middle- class families have declined, while prices at home are on the rise. The American people just want a break, but unfortunately, we heard the same stale, divisive rhetoric from President Obama.
“We have a real opportunity to work together on permanent solutions that will give those who need it a hand up. We can invest in our nation’s greatest asset, our people, not in government bureaucracy. That means a pro-family tax code that is fair for everyone and helps make America more competitive abroad; an all-of-the-above energy plan that secures American energy independence and lowers energy prices; a healthcare system where every American can see the doctor of their choice at a price they can afford; and America where our citizens are safe at home and abroad.
“We are the greatest country the world has known and there isn’t a challenge we face that is too big or too great. I’m hopeful the President will break from his rhetoric tonight and put forth a good-faith effort to work with his party and Republicans in Congress to get American back on track.â€

An Evansville woman was arrested last night north of Vincennes for public intoxication after an investigation revealed she had a blood alcohol content of .43%
At approximately 10:45 last night, Master Trooper Jim Dotson was patrolling SR 67 when he spotted a Black 2013 Honda CRV parked in a driveway near Hagemeier Lane. When Dotson approached the vehicle he found it was occupied by Sandra Dee Goshinska, 51, of Evansville. Dotson detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and Goshinska displayed signs of extreme intoxication. Goshinska’s vehicle was not running and the keys were not in the ignition. She was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes where it was revealed she had a BAC of .43%. Further investigation revealed Goshinska had a suspended driver’s license. She was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the Knox County Jail where she is currently being held on bond.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated January as “National Radon Action Monthâ€. According to the EPA’s website (www.EPA.gov/radon), radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year – with about 2,900 of these deaths occurring among people who have never smoked.
“In this past year alone, Radon Systems of Indiana has mitigated dozens of potentially fatal radon issues in homes right here in the Tri-State. Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas that enters homes through cracks in the foundation and openings around pumps, pipes, and drains. The only way to know if you and your family are at risk is to test your home,†said Joe Neth, owner of Radon Systems of Indiana, the only locally-owned, full-service, state licensed residential radon mitigation services specialist serving Southwest Indiana and Kentucky.
A considerable number of homes in Evansville and the surrounding areas are predicted to be above the acceptable limits for radon. The only way to reduce the risk of radon exposure is to test. Â
Radon Systems of Indiana (www.RadonSystemsIndiana.com) is owned and operated by Your Basement Solution, LLC. Your Basement Solution, LLC also owns and operates B-Dry Waterproofing Systems of Southwest Indiana, the nation’s basement waterproofing and crawl space waterproofing specialist serving the Tri-State since 1984; Ram Jack of Southwest Indiana, the nation’s top foundation repair specialist; and the area’s only Owens Corning® Basement Finishing Systemâ„¢ provider. Â

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 20, 2015) — A bill authored by State Sens. Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville) and Sue Glick (R-LaGrange) that would strengthen the Hoosier Women Veterans’ Program passed the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs and the Military today by a 7-0 vote. SB 424 now moves to the full Senate for consideration.
This measure would require the director of the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) to designate a coordinator for the Hoosier Women Veterans’ Program. The DVA’s Women Veterans’ Program is devoted to helping women veterans access resources and services available to them through the State of Indiana and the federal government.
“This program needs a strong leader to ensure women veterans are given the attention they deserve,†Becker said. “The role of women in the military continues to grow and their gender-specific needs should be addressed appropriately.â€
“Female veterans are often unaware of the benefits and services available to them and we want to make sure they have the help they need when returning to civilian life,†Glick said. “To do that successfully, women veterans should be given particular consideration, attention and the best possible care.â€
Currently, over 33,000 female veterans reside in Indiana who have served in every war period, including World War II. For more information on the DVA’s Women Veterans’ Program, click here.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office graduated nineteen (19) new confinement officers from the Jail Officers Course this past Friday, January 16, 2015. Officers from Vanderburgh, Gibson, Warrick, Perry, Dubois and Pike counties attended.
In 2006, the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board approved the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office as a regional training site for this forty (40) hour course, which is required of all newly hired jail officers during their first year. The new officers were instructed in subjects such as: ethics, standards of conduct, report writing, jail operations, physical security, searches, evidence gathering, sexual misconduct, response to physical resistance, blood borne pathogens, first aid, cultural awareness, suicide prevention, mental illness and legal issues.
The regional officers returned to their respective agencies this week in order to continue additional facility specific training. Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office confinement officers will spend the next two weeks attending additional classroom and practical training, which will include topics such as: housing unit supervision, gang identification, defensive and physical tactics, record keeping and practical scenarios.
Upon completion of the classroom training, each new Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office confinement officer will be assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) for an additional seven (7) weeks before being permitted to work alone.
Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “I can’t thank my staff enough for putting together a top notch training program. New confinement officers who come through this program will be well equipped to face the challenges of operating in a jail environment.”
At any given time the Sheriff’s Office houses over 500 inmates and nearly 100 work release participants within the confines of a 156,722 square foot facility. As an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy accredited provider, the Sheriff’s Office accepts applications from outside agencies to attend the Confinement Officer Training School at our facility.
