Severe Weather and EVSC Schools

0

We wanted to let you know that buses in the North High School attendance district in the EVSC are running late, due to the severe weather that passed through our area, and the resulting downed power lines and debris and flooding on roadways.  We have messaged out to our families that they will be arriving home late – but wanted to let all of you know, as well, to help spread the word.

Also –all evening activities are continuing as planned, with the EXCEPTION of Scott School’s Kindergarten Orientation.  There is currently no power at Scott School – so orientation tonight, originally planned from 5:30-7 p.m., has been cancelled.  It will be re-scheduled to a later date.

On Monday, April 06, 2015 at 1:14pm the Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Upper Mount Vernon Road and Tree Top Lane upon report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Responding sheriff’s deputies located a yellow 1994 Ford Mustang wrecked against a tree and down an embankment on the side of Upper Mount Vernon Road. The driver indicated that he had been traveling too fast, left the right side of the roadway, over-corrected, crossed the center of the roadway and then exited the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a tree before coming to rest.

The driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and the vehicle airbag was deployed. The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol is suspected of being a factor in the crash and a blood sample will be sent to the Indiana State Department of Toxicology for analysis.

Gibson County – Just before midnight, Troopers Brock Buchanan and Paul Stolz were patrolling US 41 northbound near C.R. 400 South when they observed a pickup truck parked facing the wrong way. The vehicle was parked facing south between the median and the northbound passing lane. The male driver was passed out behind the wheel. After troopers were able to get the driver to wake up, he appeared to be very confused. Troopers also found a near empty pint of Whiskey on the seat next to the driver’s leg. The driver was identified as Donald W. Seitz, 55, of Boonville.  Seitz was so impaired that troopers were unable to administer field sobriety tests. He was taken to Gibson General Hospital in Princeton where further investigation revealed Seitz had a blood alcohol content of .32%. Seitz was eventually taken to the Gibson County Jail where he is currently being held on bond.

Arrested and Charge:

• Donald W. Seitz 55, Boonville

Family Day at the Statehouse

0

I recently invited families from our community to spend the day with me in Indianapolis. They had the opportunity to meet with state leaders and spend time learning about the Statehouse. I was so pleased with the number of families that participated, and I hope they enjoyed this experience as much as I did.

The day began beneath the Statehouse rotunda which is where the tour kicked off. During the tour, families visited Indiana’s Supreme Court, learned about the history of the building and got to spend time in both the House and Senate chambers.

Later, the House Republican Intern Director discussed student opportunities. He mentioned that any student, 13 to 18 years of age, has the ability to page for the Indiana House of Representatives and see a full day of legislative activity. There is still time for those interested in being a page to fill out an application for this session. If you are interested, I encourage you to view this link to learn more: http://www.indianahouserepublicans.com/page-program-2015/.

Parents and students were also informed about the House Republican internship program which offers paid internships in our Member Services, Communications, Technology and Policy departments. This internship provides experience as an active participant in the legislative process while working closely with legislators and developing professional skills. Although this internship runs during the legislative session, which is nearing the end for 2015, this is always something to keepin mind for next year.

Family Day was also a great chance for constituents to meet with Indiana Auditor Suzanne Crouch and Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann. With both leaders being from southern Indiana, it was the perfect occasion for both women to talk with Hoosiers from back home as well as discuss their role as an elected official in charge of a statewide office.

Lastly, families were invited to watch session from the House gallery. It was particularly special because I was able to present the Evansville Spirit Cheer team, who had also joined us for Family Day, with a resolution on the House floor. Through inspirational cheers, the resolution recognized the members and their coaches for raising awareness about children with disabilities.

It was a pleasure to spend the day with both local families and Spirit Cheer of Evansville at the Statehouse. I hope the families that visited enjoyed their time, and I would like to make this day an annual event moving forward. I want to provide our community with every opportunity to learn about state government, our rich history and insight into what I do as your representative. If this seems like something you, your family or friends would be interested in, I encourage you to contact my office to learn more.

I appreciate each of the families, and those who traveled with Spirit Cheer, for visiting with me and my colleagues here in your state capitol.image002

Pence and His Supermajority Really Messed Up

0

Indiana Democrats
Arrogant and out of touch – that’s the best way to describe Governor Mike Pence, Speaker Brian Bosma, President David Long and the Republican legislative supermajorities. They all received multiple warnings about potential backlash on the so-called Religious Freedom Restoration Act. They all ignored those warnings. And they all blamed everyone but themselves for the overwhelming RFRA uproar.
Statehouse Republicans allowed political ideology to trump Hoosier Hospitality with the enactment of RFRA. Much to their surprise, the people across this state and nation saw through the illusion Indiana Republicans attempted to produce. Their lack of vision shows how completely out of touch their brand of governing is in Indiana.
After RFRA’s supermajority debacle
Editorial, Journal and Courier
It’s hard to imagine Gov. Mike Pence handling the past two weeks any worse than he did.
He discounted the readily available signs that Senate Bill 101 — Indiana’s version of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act — came factory-installed with hints and allegations of discrimination against gay and lesbian Hoosiers. When those hints and allegations started turning into nixed development deals and nationwide boycotts — real deals about money, jobs and convention traffic — Pence blamed the media for smearing a law they misunderstood. He continued to listen to inside cronies with easily traceable ties to anti-gay agendas before giving in to adjustments on the law to save face — not to mention the state’s dwindling reputation.

The International Men’s March to Stop Rape,

Sexual Assault & Gender Violence”

April 7, 2015 at the University of Southern Indiana

Inspired by the old saying, “You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” men will literally walk one mile in women’s high heeled shoes on April 7, 2015 on the University of Southern Indiana campus to protest rape, sexual assault & gender violence.  Men, women and children are invited to participate in the Walk planned by Albion Fellows Bacon Center and USI’s Sexual Assault and Gender Violence Prevention Group. Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding, Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann, Evansville Police Department Chief Billy Bolin, and other men are going to walk in high-heeled shoes to raise awareness about rape.

Registration for the Walk will begin at 5:00 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions building on USI’s campus.  This year’s walk will feature a local male volunteer who will discuss why he has taken the steps he does to help make a difference.  After the walk, Wedding, Hermann, and Bolin will pledge with students and community members to make a difference.  Men, women, and children are invited to participate.

The Walk is organized by Albion Fellows Bacon Center and the University of Southern Indiana Sexual Assault/Gender Violence prevention group and sponsored by a number of USI campus organizations, including Fraternity and Sorority Life of USI, USI Student Government Association SOS Grants, and Student Housing Association of USI.  Community sponsors include Holly’s House, Fraternal Order of Police #73, Lampion Center, YWCA, Boyd Electric and SouthWest Graphix among others.

A woman is raped every 90 seconds in America.  Albion Fellows Bacon Center provided sexual assault services to 552 primary and secondary victims in 2014.  Albion is a non-profit agency serving victims of domestic and sexual violence.   We provide emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis line, short-term individual crisis counseling, support groups, and legal and medical advocacy to victims, their friends and family.  All of the services are free of charge.  For more information about this event or how to get involved, please contact Christina Wicks at Albion Fellows Bacon Center, 812-422-9372 or by email at christina.wicks@albionfellowsbacon.org.  More information about the national Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence can be found on the internet at www.walkamileinhershoes.org.
