Evansville Man Arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Marijuana

 Friday night at approximately 7:11, Trooper Brent Gramig stopped Bruce Hammond, 23, of Evansville, for driving 62 in a 45 mph zone on US 41 near St. George Road. When Gramig approached the vehicle he detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana. A search produced a marijuana cigarette and a small bag of marijuana. Further investigation revealed Hammond was impaired.  He was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where he is currently being held without bond.

University of Evansville’s Study Abroad Program Ranked #1 in America

The University of Evansville study abroad program at Harlaxton College, has been ranked number one in America by BestCollegeReviews.org.

International studies is a hallmark at the University of Evansville, with over 60 percent of students studying abroad.  In addition to offering a study abroad curriculum that allows students to graduate in four years, the programs are open to all majors and backgrounds. Events to Mark 50th Anniversary of Undefeated Aces Basketball Team

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1964-65 Evansville Aces. At that time, the Aces were not only an outstanding basketball team; they were a major Evansville social activity. Over 12,000 fans packed Evansville’s Roberts Municipal Stadium on a regular basis to cheer for their hometown team.

In honor of this anniversary, the public is invited to a panel discussion Saturday, January 24, with the starting five of this undefeated 1964-65 team. Mike Blake will moderate. The event will be at the Old National Events Plaza, Ballrooms B, C, and D. Doors open at noon, with the discussion taking place from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

Following the program, the book The Undefeated Season: The Newspaper Story of the 1964-1965 Evansville College Purple Aces Basketball Team, edited by starting guard Russ Grieger and retired editor and publisher of the Evansville Courier & Press Tom Tuley, will be available for signing.

Later that day, when the present day Purple Aces play Southern Illinois University at the Ford Center at 3:05 p.m., the 1964-65 team will be recognized at half-time. A commemorative program will be available

Then January 25 – April 19, an exhibit on the team will be on display in the Evansville Museum’s Evansville Convention & Visitors Bureau Center of History and Science. “Winning Them All: The Evansville Aces 1964-65” will recall the season when the Aces went undefeated and claimed the school’s fourth College Division National Championship (today’s Division II).

Session is off to a great start

The first two weeks of the legislative session have come and gone, and we are off to a great start. Even though this is a longer session, we need that extra time in order to review, debate and pass a budget that will operate Indiana for the next two years, which is an enormous task.

With the bill filing deadline behind us, and as the Vice Chair of the Courts and Criminal Code Committee, I look forward to working with my colleagues to properly vet the bills assigned to our committee. As of now, more than two dozen bills have been assigned, covering a wide variety of topics ranging from; adjusting the criminal code in Indiana, increasing public safety for Hoosiers and evaluating expungement the law to list a few.

As always, my goal as Vice Chair is to ensure that every bill is evaluated fairly and thoroughly and that the decisions we make are in the best interest of Hoosiers. All committee hearings are open to the public and can be viewed online. Legislation protecting Hoosier homeowners passes Indiana House

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Ron Bacon (R-Chandler) has authored a bill to protect homeowners affected by mine subsidence by raising the maximum amount of insurance coverage available. Thursday, the bill passed unanimously out of the House of Representatives and will now go to the Senate for further consideration and debate.

Currently, the Department of Insurance (DOI) limits coverage to $200,000 per structure. House Bill (HB) 1021 increases the maximum mine subsidence insurance coverage to $500,000 per structure.

“Mine subsidence is an issue that predominately impacts southern Indiana,” said Rep. Bacon. “Currently, there are several homes in Warrick County that are built over formerly mined property that are worth more than $200,000. This legislation will allow Hoosiers to fully insure their homes and avoid out-of-pocket expenses in the event that damage occurs, while at the same time, having no significant negative fiscal impact on the state.”

Between fiscal years 2011 and 2013, a total of 73 mine subsidence claims were submitted to DOI. Of these claims, 44 were approved, totaling approximately $2.6 million in payments from the Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund. The fund currently has a balance of $5.2 million.
