Get to Know Sister Gertrude Levy, DC, and St. Mary’s Health Foundation Volunteer

0

Would you please share a little about yourself?

I was born and raised in the French Quarter in New Orleans. I have been a Daughter of Charity for the past 78 years. I made my first vows in 1941. I attended a Daughters of Charity High School in New Orleans, which was where I realized that I wanted to become a Daughter. Two months after graduating, I joined the Daughters of Charity community.

Would you please tell us about your family?

I grew up in a loving family. My mother was wonderful and caring. She stayed at home and took care of me and my siblings. There were 5 boys and 4 girls in our family. My father was a musician and he graduated from Loyola University with a degree in Law. Three of the girls in our family became Daughters of Charity. One of my sisters, Sister Muriel, DC, lives at Seton Residence in Evansville with me today. All of the children in our family were musicians. I played the clarinet, piano and saxophone. We had a family band, but we never performed in public!

What has been your most memorable experience as a Daughter of Charity?

For 37 years, I taught in grade schools and high schools throughout the southern part of the United States. I’ve always been a southerner, so I’m not used to the snow! I worked in Donaldsonville, Louisiana; Long Beach, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama; Natchez, Mississippi; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Los Angeles, California. As a high school teacher, I taught math and science. Then, I worked in Fundraising for 40 years at Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas. When I started at Seton, they had a fundraising employee, a public relations employee and me. When I left in May 2014, there were 60 individuals working in Fundraising for the Seton Healthcare Family, which includes 12 hospitals. I was involved in all aspects of Fundraising, including meeting with donors and inviting their support for our Mission. I have enjoyed all of my jobs and each one has helped prepare me for the next. Today, I continue to serve on the Seton Fund Board of Trustees.

Please describe your involvement with the St. Mary’s Health Foundation.

I began volunteering with the St. Mary’s Health Foundation on October 1, 2014. I visit patients in the hospital and call donors to thank them for their support. I enjoy doing whatever I can to help carry out the Mission of St. Mary’s Health. The work of the Foundation is very important to the success of St. Mary’s Health. I enjoy knowing that what I’m doing will help the poor and serve our Mission. It is exactly the reason I joined the Daughters of Charity.

What particular spiritual practice is most important to you and why?

The most important spiritual practice to me is attending daily mass. It is also important for me to live in community with the Daughters of Charity. The Daughters of Charity left Texas in 2014, which is when I came to Evansville.

What has been your most rewarding experience in life?

My whole life has been rewarding since it involves working with people. I have always been a people person! In all of my roles throughout life, I have been drawn to those that involve interacting with people.

What do you consider to be your greatest legacy?

My greatest legacy is my endowment to the poor in Austin, Texas. The endowment was created in 1999 and is called the Sister Gertrude Levy Endowment. It totals more than $2 million and exists to serve the poor in Austin, Texas, including patients at Seton’s three community health centers, Seton Kozmetsky in South Austin, Seton McCarthy in East Austin and Seton Topfer in North Austin.

When you see Sister Gertrude at St. Mary’s, be sure to say hello. She can often be found visiting with patients or in her office on the first floor of St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute making phone calls to thank donors for their generosity. You’ll also find her in the cafeteria eating lunch with family and friends of patients or Associates every Wednesday and Thursday after daily mass at 11:30 a.m.

Do you tell your parents “no”?

0

Do you say “no” to your parents? Are you able to? If so, does it come easy or does it fill you with guilt?

The St. Mary’s Health Foundation Board was recently asked for a meaningful favor to honor our parents – the Daughters of Charity.

St. Mary’s would like to build the Daughters of Charity Prayer Garden in the grassy area outside of our Chapel to pay homage to the amazing women who gave birth to our Mission and Ministry in 1872. Our Board’s decision was quite easy. And, as one Board member asked, “How do you say “no” to your parents?!”

Well, the Foundation Board voted unanimously to fund the major construction costs for the Prayer Garden and is thrilled to do so. After all, without the Daughters, St. Mary’s would simply not exist. There would be no hospital, no physicians or nurses, no Foundation and no Foundation Board.

Thanks to the Daughters, our Mission is alive and well today – 143 years later.

The Daughters are important to more than St. Mary’s though, which is why we have started a brick campaign. The entire community is invited to purchase bricks to help support the construction costs of the Prayer Garden. A gift of $100 will purchase an individual brick. Bricks can be inscribed with your name or in honor or memory of a loved one or friend. For more information, please download a brick campaign flyer here.

The initial response from fellow St. Mary’s Associates has been overwhelmingly positive, with a number of Associates purchasing bricks. One Associate even agreed to fund a Statue of Mary for the Prayer Garden. Naming recognition opportunities, including benches and lights, are available if you are interested. Please contact me at 812.485.4412 or richard.peltier@stmarysorg.

With a planned opening in May, the Month of Mary, the Prayer Garden will welcome visitors in time for spring. We believe the Prayer Garden will be a fitting tribute to the Daughters’ legacy. We hope that you agree and will show your support by purchasing a brick today. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Blessings,

Rick Peltier
Director, St. Mary’s Health Foundation

Dear Ann Landers

Dear Ann Landers: I never have cheated on my wife and am absolutely certain that I never will. We have been married for five wonderful years, and our marriage is rock solid. Here’s the problem: About a year ago, during a moment of passion, I happened to call out the name of my wife’s best friend, “Annabelle.” You can imagine my wife’s reaction.
Annabelle is single, in her early 20s and good-looking, and she has a terrific figure. She moved out of town three years ago. I made it clear to my wife that nothing ever went on between Annabelle and me and that calling her name was just part of a harmless fantasy. I tried to explain that fantasies are normal and I have no intention of acting them out. My wife accepted this explanation, and things seemed to be going well. Now comes the hard part.
Annabelle visits us once a year and stays for a week. Her visit is coming up soon, and my wife has started to turn very cold. In fact, she’s downright hostile. I know she is afraid I will be attracted to Annabelle and feels threatened. What can I do to reassure her and get things back on track? — Faithful in Denver
Dear Denver: Because you have had sexual fantasies about Annabelle, your wife has some justification for feeling a bit threatened. Start immediately to line up some attractive men for Annabelle to go out with when she is visiting you. Make sure you are never alone with your guest, and most importantly, concentrate on finding a substitute fantasy woman. (Any star of stage or screen will do.) And be especially affectionate to your wife in Annabelle’s presence. She will appreciate it.
Dear Ann Landers: I have been going with a man for three years. “Jerome” has a 5-year-old daughter, and I don’t know how much longer I can tolerate that child. She tells her father where to sit, where to stand, when to go out and what to eat. She walks around his apartment and insists on holding his hand, no matter what he’s doing. She even goes to the bathroom with him. (He says she cries if he locks her out.) If she awakens in the middle of the night, he allows her to sleep with him.
Jerome is divorced, and his daughter spends two nights a week at his place. I realize she misses her father, but this seems to me a very unhealthy attachment. When she is with him, she won’t play with her toys or watch TV. She only wants to sit on his lap. This child has so many hang-ups it saddens me. Jerome says I am jealous of her, but I don’t believe this is true. What do you say, Ann? — Ready To Give Up in Richmond, Va.
Dear Richmond: Dump Jerome, unless you are willing to play second fiddle to that pathetic spoiled brat for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, her brattiness is not her fault. Her father (probably guilty about the divorce) has catered to the child to the extent that he is totally under her thumb. Adios, Jerome, and the sooner the better.

IS IT TRUE March 2, 2015

41

IS IT TRUE a story has emerged that City Council candidate Steve Davis filed a personal bankruptcy in 2010 and had state income taxes go to the warrant stage before payment….the reporter listed a “routine candidate background check” as the impetus for the article….this writer calls foul on such a basis….if the reporter had truly done a candidate background check for those running for office in the Second Ward, he would have found lawsuits for the sitting Councilwoman….the current occupant of the 2nd Ward City Council seat, Ms. Melissa Mosby, has been sued at least twice since taking office in 2008…..to be fair to the readers, now that the seal has been broken, both candidates’ dirty laundry should be aired…..Ms. Mosby was sued by Med 1 Solutions, LLC in August of 2009 for $993.26 plus interest related to unpaid medical bills…. Ms. Mosby was also sued by the Evansville Country Club in August of 2013 for $3,846.80 plus interest related to her membership with that organization….both cases are found under Cause Numbers 82D06-0908-SC-6903 and 82D06-1308-SC-9117 respectively….in reality neither set of issues for the candidates are necessarily indicative of the inability to serve and instead must be viewed from the broader perspective of the person as a whole…. both candidates have been self-employed where cash flow can be an issue and both candidates have gone through divorce….it is getting more and more difficult to get honest and hardworking individuals to throw their hat into the political ring, as most people have their warts….the reporter in this matter was unconcerned that he was being used to attack one candidate who doesn’t look so different from the other in this regard….ultimately, he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone?

IS IT TRUE HCW’s Rick Huffman was quoted recently as being “cautiously optimistic” that the scaled back, higher priced downtown hotel will actually be built….the bill of goods that was sold to the taxpayers for their $20 million contribution and free land to the developer was a largely glass and steel, 10-story design with a rooftop bar and over 70 high end apartments attached….the drawing carried around by the Mayor’s office for months that drove the local elite to pound the table for the project’s approval (http://www.hcwdevelopment.com/news-evansville-convention-hotel-project-moves-forward-44.php) is no longer an option….the design sold to the taxpayers came in at a cost of approximately $44 million when the budget was $31.5 million….Of the prior $31.5 million budget for the hotel, City residents were in for a $7.5 million subsidy, and Old National Bank  and HCW was to divide the remaining $24 million….Old National Bank was unable to generate its full share with the amount of that share still not clear….the new project has a price tag of $36 million but will be a 5-story stick built structure with or without the rooftop bar and no apartments….the quote of Huffman most interesting to this writer is his statement, “I think we’re there, but I want to make sure the whole team is buying in.”…..this is Mr. Huffman’s code for “We have to make sure the local spinmeisters can enthusiastically sell this bait and switch” (http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/texas/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-galveston-beach-GLSDTDT/index.html)?

IS IT TRUE the Winnecke Administration through its front man Steve Schaefer got the drop on State Representative Gail Riecken’s budget vote….the story was reported by Channel 14 with a headline that reads Evansville mayoral candidate votes against bill that included IU med school funding within hours of the vote….the Riecken campaign issued a statement that she voted against the budget for several reasons that included the failure of the state legislature to fully fund the Evansville IU Medical School project….Riecken’s choice to issue a statement after the vote instead of holding a press conference beforehand forced her to chase the story and represented an underestimation of the public relations machine that is Lloyd Winnecke….although qualified to hold the position of Mayor, Riecken is in for a media campaign at a level that she has been previously unfamiliar….as a minority party member in the state legislature, it is somewhat predictable that she would not agree with the failure to fund a variety of projects that she supports….voting against the budget is primarily symbolic in a legislature with a Republican super majority….the questions that remains unanswered is why didn’t Republican representatives from southwestern Indiana support her Ways & Means Committee amendment to fully fund the project or lobby their party for a larger allotment in the budget?

IS IT TRUE we thank you for your support and look forward to bringing you the news in a way that not only brings you into the discussion but makes you feel compelled to participate?

Letter To The Editor “ISTEP IS AN UNCONSTITUTIONAL BRIBE FROM U.S. CONGRESS”

8

The City County Observer is happy to accept letters to the Editor. Letters will typically be printed on Sundays and will always appear without editing. To submit a letter to our Editor, please email it to citycountyobserver@live.com.

The following is a letter written by Steven Walker, the Chairman of the Constitution Party of Indiana, and is written in response to a Courier & Press article appearing February 25, 2015 with the online title Ask Principals, administrators about ISTEP opt out. The full article may be found at the following link:

http://www.courierpress.com/news/education/making-the-grade/ask-principals-administrators-about-istep-opt-out_82088137.

Below is Mr. Walker’s response to the same. This letter was originally submitted to the Courier & Press, and that entity declined to publish. The City County Observer does not endorse any position taken in letters to the Editor. We do believe that no opinion should be shunned and found unworthy of debate.

ISTEP is an Unconstitutional Bribe from U.S. Congress

ISTEP is a federal program with attached federal funding for those states and school districts who participate in its implementation. However, there must be a 95% participation rate of enrolled students in order to receive the federal funding. This is Political Bribery.

The ISTA is very concerned about the loss of this “Bribery Money” to the point they issue orders to the school districts not to let the teachers inform the parents of their right to “opt out” of ISTEP for their children. Local districts have even threatened teachers with “firing” if they even discuss “opt out” with the parents. Rather, they are informed to have the subject discussed with administrative personnel. This is unconstitutional.

Where is the allegiance of the administration? Is it to the children, whom they are assumed to be serving, or is it to the federal funding (bribes) of ISTEP and their own jobs? Apparently, the allegiance of the ISTA and local administrators belong to their own jobs and the federal bribes. The ISTEP bribe is only one of a multitude of “Bribery Acts” by the U.S. Congress to usurp the freedoms of American citizens and take unconstitutional authority over legal Americans. The powers of the Constitution belong to the citizens of America, not Federal Government. The parents of the children have the right to make decisions for the education and welfare of their children. That right cannot be dictated by government, school districts or “the village.”

Whether they are the local school districts throughout Indiana, Indiana State Teachers Association, Indiana State Legislature or the Governor, federal bribes must not be taken into consideration for policies or law making by any of them. If it comes with attached strings such as ISTEP, then it must be rejected by all government and educational officials in the magnificent state of Indiana. The Constitutional rights of all Hoosiers, especially our children must come first, not the illusory benefits of the bribe.

The Federal Bribery Acts are not only a detriment to America, they are also unconstitutional. They must be rejected. Carrots enslave the horse to its master.

Indiana State Police Respond to More Than 600 Calls for Service from Yesterday Evening through Mid Afternoon Today

0

Across Indiana from 7 p.m. yesterday evening through 3 p.m. today the Indiana State Police report: 224 Property Damage and 45 Personal Injury crashes plus response to 237 vehicles that slid off the road and an additional 137 responses to assist motorists with traffic/weather related problems.

Fortunately, thus far, there have been no fatality crashes investigated by the Indiana State Police during this weather event.  At the time of this report, there were no reported road closures.

As mentioned in earlier messages, Hoosiers should carefully consider if travel is necessary, especially when roads are snow covered, icy and hazardous. If travel is necessary, the Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Transportation and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security are encouraging motorists to use a variety of resources to make an informed decision.

One source is the Indiana County Travel Advisory Map. It’s updated with travel information determined by county emergency management agencies and describes the conditions for a travel warning, watch, advisory and caution.

The map is available online at http://www.in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory/  or on a mobile device by downloading the Indiana Travel Advisory app for iPhone (https://appsto.re/us/QHVw4.i) in the App Store, and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gov.in.traveladvisory) in the Google Play Store.

Keep an eye on road conditions and closures across the state using the Indiana Department of Transportation’s TrafficWise service at trafficwise.in.gov.

If you must travel, leave early, drive slower and arrive alive.
