IS IT TRUE March 2, 2015

IS IT TRUE a story has emerged that City Council candidate Steve Davis filed a personal bankruptcy in 2010 and had state income taxes go to the warrant stage before payment….the reporter listed a “routine candidate background check” as the impetus for the article….this writer calls foul on such a basis….if the reporter had truly done a candidate background check for those running for office in the Second Ward, he would have found lawsuits for the sitting Councilwoman….the current occupant of the 2nd Ward City Council seat, Ms. Melissa Mosby, has been sued at least twice since taking office in 2008…..to be fair to the readers, now that the seal has been broken, both candidates’ dirty laundry should be aired…..Ms. Mosby was sued by Med 1 Solutions, LLC in August of 2009 for $993.26 plus interest related to unpaid medical bills…. Ms. Mosby was also sued by the Evansville Country Club in August of 2013 for $3,846.80 plus interest related to her membership with that organization….both cases are found under Cause Numbers 82D06-0908-SC-6903 and 82D06-1308-SC-9117 respectively….in reality neither set of issues for the candidates are necessarily indicative of the inability to serve and instead must be viewed from the broader perspective of the person as a whole…. both candidates have been self-employed where cash flow can be an issue and both candidates have gone through divorce….it is getting more and more difficult to get honest and hardworking individuals to throw their hat into the political ring, as most people have their warts….the reporter in this matter was unconcerned that he was being used to attack one candidate who doesn’t look so different from the other in this regard….ultimately, he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone?

IS IT TRUE HCW’s Rick Huffman was quoted recently as being “cautiously optimistic” that the scaled back, higher priced downtown hotel will actually be built….the bill of goods that was sold to the taxpayers for their $20 million contribution and free land to the developer was a largely glass and steel, 10-story design with a rooftop bar and over 70 high end apartments attached….the drawing carried around by the Mayor’s office for months that drove the local elite to pound the table for the project’s approval (http://www.hcwdevelopment.com/news-evansville-convention-hotel-project-moves-forward-44.php) is no longer an option….the design sold to the taxpayers came in at a cost of approximately $44 million when the budget was $31.5 million….Of the prior $31.5 million budget for the hotel, City residents were in for a $7.5 million subsidy, and Old National Bank  and HCW was to divide the remaining $24 million….Old National Bank was unable to generate its full share with the amount of that share still not clear….the new project has a price tag of $36 million but will be a 5-story stick built structure with or without the rooftop bar and no apartments….the quote of Huffman most interesting to this writer is his statement, “I think we’re there, but I want to make sure the whole team is buying in.”…..this is Mr. Huffman’s code for “We have to make sure the local spinmeisters can enthusiastically sell this bait and switch” (http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/texas/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-galveston-beach-GLSDTDT/index.html)?

IS IT TRUE the Winnecke Administration through its front man Steve Schaefer got the drop on State Representative Gail Riecken’s budget vote….the story was reported by Channel 14 with a headline that reads Evansville mayoral candidate votes against bill that included IU med school funding within hours of the vote….the Riecken campaign issued a statement that she voted against the budget for several reasons that included the failure of the state legislature to fully fund the Evansville IU Medical School project….Riecken’s choice to issue a statement after the vote instead of holding a press conference beforehand forced her to chase the story and represented an underestimation of the public relations machine that is Lloyd Winnecke….although qualified to hold the position of Mayor, Riecken is in for a media campaign at a level that she has been previously unfamiliar….as a minority party member in the state legislature, it is somewhat predictable that she would not agree with the failure to fund a variety of projects that she supports….voting against the budget is primarily symbolic in a legislature with a Republican super majority….the questions that remains unanswered is why didn’t Republican representatives from southwestern Indiana support her Ways & Means Committee amendment to fully fund the project or lobby their party for a larger allotment in the budget?

IS IT TRUE we thank you for your support and look forward to bringing you the news in a way that not only brings you into the discussion but makes you feel compelled to participate?

  1. I have never understood why anyone would want to get into politics. It’s almost as though people who are trying to make a positive difference get thrown into the grinder. At the end of the day voters are going to elect a human being into office. Nobody is perfect. Davis and Mosby need to talk about things that matter. Since they both have a little dirt on their shoulders it will be nice to hear about their ideas and stances are on things that matter to voters.

The hotel is so mismanaged. Before any contracts are signed will the Mayor be required to go to council and update them? That’s the important question. This entire project looks shady to everyone that’s paying attention.

    • “Mismanaged” is a kind word for the hotel project. I have yet to understand why the city council hasn’t pulled the plug on the $20 million so that some crappy substitute of a cheap roach motel doesn’t slide by. Also, I cannot abide dirty politics. I vote for the class act and the honest human being. Guess that gives my private vote away to all.

  2. The Republican mud slinging machine gets pretty dirty. Reicken better be prepared to get down in the mud with them.

    • They already did the Mosby on Steve Davis. They just couldn’t wait. When I read that yesterday the Mosby was dripping off it in clumps. The reasons for the financial problems Mr. Davis had are much more defensible than defaulting on a country club membership like Mosby apparently did.

Yes, it will be a filthy campaign. Winnecke’s formal education was in communications. He’s already managed to communicate both not enough and too much to the people of Evansville. We’ve learned our lesson, he won’t be able to win in a fair race. Let the dethronement of Mosby and Winnecke be part of Rick Davis’ legacy. Gail should suit up in her Hazmat Sunday best before letting them pull her down into the gutter where they are so comfortable and do their best work.

Is the 2nd Ward secretly a bastion of Country Clubbers? Were the people of the 2nd Ward electing a representative to the council or a country clubber? Maybe a runway model?

      • Hey!! I’m back. The winter weather makes for bad travel but it’s also bonus $$ for Saul. Someone has to clean it up. What a great day to get back to the CCO comment section. Just in time watch Mayor Winnecke and Mosby sick a pack of wolves on Davis. That article is definitely a warning shot to everyone who dares test this Mayor and his favorite pet, Missy. It looks like a major backfire though. Just by reading the comments on their Website and Facebook page it seems everyone feels it was a total hit piece. Kudos to Davis on his reply too. I can’t wait to see what the newspaper doesn’t print about Mosby.

    • Ghost:

Please, when you tout your candidate, Ms. Riecken, spell her name correctly. Also, when you talk to her in Illinois, remember, the s is not followed by an e, so therefore the s is silent, and bless us also with silence 🙂

      • I don’t know her personally and don’t grovel at her feet like you pukes do with Winnecke, so yeah I don’t give a rat’s ass if I spelled her name incorrectly. Get a life?

  3. C&P yesterday had a article on unpaid property taxes in this county to a tune of upwards of $18 million.
There has been a recent “one person” push to tie these unpaid taxes to “approvals” being request from
local government to these same tax delinquents? That developers, LLC’s and even lawyers have been on that list?

Morton Marcus had a article that Vanderburgh county lost $846 million (6.9%) in GAV between 2011 to 2012?
That State of Indiana lost $4.1 billion (0.9%) in that same period?

That a well known icon known as Norris Hardware store will be closing after 145 years of business in Henderson? That this store saved the discus event at the Henderson County Colonel Classic track meet last year in which this poster was officiating? This was after the long tape came up missing, and the local large box hardware store over there did not have one?

That the city mayors race is going to get down right ugly? The damage from it will run deep into next four year term? That the fallout may lay the ground work to the city going to a city manager style government? That this will allow the mayor to just go around and kiss both ends of those babies?

  4. IS IT TRUE – “now that the seal has been broken”
~b~ my mother really DID wear combat boots.
    LOL . …

  5. Does the law filing show how much of Mosby’s Evansville Country Club bill was for alcohol.

    • Did she think the club would comp her on the bill because of her exalted position in local government? One can not help but wonder whether there were some members who would have been glad to take care of that minor embarrassment for her.

      • Someone on C&P said she was cashing unemployment checks while working at a bar and for council. Is that even legal?

          • Brains it’s not if , she was making apx. $18,800 as a city council person , and yes supposedly she was working at the main gate bar & grill waiting tables and collecting unemployment all at the same time
Indiana unemployment office verîfied that she was drawing unemployment compensation

  6. IS IT TRUE – “this is Mr. Huffman’s code for “We have to make sure the local spinmeisters can enthusiastically sell this bait and switch””

~b~ Any City Council Rep who doesn’t vocally and actively … demand and affect a formal re-think …
of our scarce and precious taxpayer dollars … towards this diminished and likely dysfunctional
Cracker-box Hotel … does not deserve be re-elected and should be …
    kicked to the curb.

Would they hand over our $20 Million Dollars … if HCW brings in a porta-potty and beach umbrella? …

    • To put a face on that $20 million, that is the amount that the city reportedly received in
December from fall property tax. This is what the city has to run on for six months!
And it was reported that all but $300,000 was already applied to previous expense?

  7. The Republicans can’t beat Gail Riecken. They can do everything in their power to try but it won’t work. Democrats are united and this Mayor has been caught in several lies. This hotel project is his last – get my rich friends even richer – scheme he has so they are cramming as much in as possible. Evansville just has to endure Winnecke for 10 more months.

  8. The Democrat spin machine has started…”now that the seal has been broken” has the writer forgotten that the seal was broken long ago when SBR gave the CCO the Doxpop listing for prior civil cases that were filed against Mosby. These papers were posted on this site until, according to CCO, they were requested to be removed by SBR. I still have a copy of them with SBR’s name on the top of the document as the account holder for the query. The document is dated 10/4/13. I can see trying to smear someone during a campaign (which is what you’re attempting now). but what was the reason for SBR trying to humiliate her co-Councilmember and party mate a year and a half ago?

    • Now that the seal has been broken . . . .

When will the C & P announce that Jonathan Weaver is a wife beater ? Is that better or worse than someone who has declared bankruptcy ?

    • I remember that day. It seems like there were 3 lawsuits against Mosby. I’m not sure the Country Club was included. Which ones are we missing here?

    • You have a selective memory. Go back to the summer and fall of 2013. Mosby and Weaver had called Channel 14 to be waiting outside of a caucus that they claimed they weren’t invited to attend, they had been on television railing against budget cuts in general and the cutting of Roberts Park specifically, they criticized John Friend related to the budget and Connie Robinson for challenging Bolin’s statements at a city council meeting, and they had just lashed out at all other members for delaying the vote on the hotel for 2 weeks and not supporting a 38.5 million bond. You must be related to Brian Williams with all your misremembering. It’s completely unbecoming and makes you look less intelligent than you probably really are. All that hate you have is very sad.

  9. ‘… trying to humiliate her co-Councilmember and party mate …’ .
    Huh?

Phoenix, just because your head is spinning doesn’t mean any ‘spin machine’ has cranked up. Sounds Cotton Candy related to me. Winnecke and Mosby are going to have enough trouble in their campaigns without you lumbering into the china shop. Last I looked the apparent focus of your spite, SBR, isn’t running for anything.

  10. QUESTION:
Are some of you seeing problems with the CCO site today?

Answer: Yes! We have received many reader hits today which caused our site to crash many times throughout the day. We had to ask our site host to increase our ram size. Our site seem to be working now.

    Thanks for your support!

  11. Just an idea:
Whoever was involved in the downtown/river walkway should be involved in any publicly financed project.
Reason being , what other project of recent past has been so utterly successful?
I vote predominantly Republican , but whoever created that gem is a genius in my opinion.
Who in the mid 90’s realized that Whirlpool was a goner and started working for a casino boat?
Another wonderful mind in my opinion.
We have the boat and the walkway.
We have Ellis Park. The prettiest racetrack in America.
My point is- who can capitalize on our right here, right now resources?
The old girl needs the money.

  12. The Communist Community Organizer-in-Chief as at it again, this time hurting real Americans instead of ignoring the radical Muslim Holocaust in the middle east:

“White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest confirmed Monday that President Obama is “very interested” in the idea of raising taxes through unitlateral executive action.

“The president certainly has not indicated any reticence in using his executive authority to try and advance an agenda that benefits middle class Americans,” Earnest said in response to a question about Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) calling on Obama to raise more than $100 billion in taxes through IRS executive action.

“Now I don’t want to leave you with the impression that there is some imminent announcement, there is not, at least that I know of,” Earnest continued. “But the president has asked his team to examine the array of executive authorities that are available to him to try to make progress on his goals. So I am not in a position to talk in any detail at this point, but the president is very interested in this avenue generally,” Earnest finished.”

All you people that work, can pay for the freebees of the Obama voters.

  13. The bias that the C&P shows towards Missy Mosby, and against Steve Davis, is almost comical. Who doesn’t have blemishes on their life’s record? For one, I know my closet is full of skeletons, especially during my twenties, and even thirties.
The C&P can go after Davis for anything, but blatantly ignore Mosby’s lawsuits. Not to mention, Davis has PAID his debts, in full. Mosby was sued, while IN office, as an elected Councilwoman.

Further- it appears that Mosby has ignored (or refused) to participate in a great cause that gives scholarship money to students that desperately need it. Supposedly, she refused, because Davis is participating as well. A professional would put partisan politics aside, and still contribute to a great cause.

Both Mosby, and the C&P, *in my opinion* are anything but professional.
