You might want to stuff your pants pockets with sand and hang onto the rail as the ship of state lurches towards the distinct possibility that the next election to command the helm will be between Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton. The brother versus the wife. Sounds like a probate lawsuit.

This promises to be a fabulous development for comedians everywhere, precipitating the resurrection of all our 1992 Bush/Clinton material. It’s the green thing to do. Recycling meets nostalgia. Together again for the very first time. A rematch by proxy. Now, if only we could coax Ross Perot back into the fray.

If Jeb does win his party’s nomination, it would mean a Bush has been on their presidential ticket seven out of the last 10 elections, which is way past dynasty; now we’re talking anti-trust legislation. If Democrats aren’t investigating the possibility of indicting the Bush Family as a monopolistic cartel infringing on the Sherman Act, they’re more clueless than we first thought. Which was considerable.

Meanwhile, the GOP is trying to nip all this dynastic chatter in the bud by pointing out that Hillary would be a sequel as well. But a sequel is not a dynasty. She’s only the 2nd Clinton to run, which is different than three candidates from the same family by one. I doubt a third Roosevelt could get elected.

Besides, Hillary is a woman, a concept Republicans aren’t overly hip to. The only woman the Tea Party would nominate is Barbara Bush. Not as a candidate, as a production facility.  They fail to grasp how the first person with a y-chromosome deficiency to top a ticket is a big deal. Nor do they understand how disparate the nature is between the 3rd Bush and the 1st woman.

The problem is, Jeb has excited both donors and party regulars. You keep hearing, “no, no, you don’t understand, this is the smart one! He’s takes after mom.” And isn’t that typical? Finally trotting out the smart one the third time around. At least the Dems had the good sense to send up their smart Clinton the 2nd time at bat.

Jeb is the guy who famously said he disagreed with nothing his brother ever did in the White House. Of course, when Hillary was Senator of New York, she stated she could not believe a sitting president of the United States would ever lie to her. Arguments can be made that neither one of them pays close attention.

The GOP doesn’t realize how off-putting this whole dynasty thing is to ordinary Americans. Our whole system of government is based on not being a monarchy. As much as the Bush Family likes to hold hands with them, we aren’t Saudi Arabia.

“But Jeb is his own man.” Yeah, sure. An aide to the Right to Rise PAC said 21 members advising Jeb used to work in the Bush 1 or Bush 2 administrations. Who’s he going to pick as VP, Dick Cheney?

One consolation about this whole sovereign ascendancy matchup is whoever wins isn’t going to need much of an orientation when it comes to figuring out the lay of the land at the White House. Look at that, we’re saving money already.

Art in the City is our annual Members Only Art Exhibition. Artists may enter one piece, and all entries entered will be displayed, as long as entry requirements have been met.

Entries will be juried for cash awards by this year’s juror, Gary Logan Hobdy.

Entry Requirements & Procedures

2-D Entries:

Framed dimensions with frame cannot exceed 60” in any direction. Submissions must be appropriately framed and securely wired. No sawtooth hangers.

3-D Entries:

Height Limit: 8 Feet

Weight Limit: 150 lbs.

Artwork should be assembled and ready for juror at the time of delivery, no exceptions.

All Entries:

•All submitted art must have been completed within the last 2 years.

•Entry cannot have been displayed in any Arts Council juried exhibition or have won a cash award in any regional exhibition.

•Artist must sign hold harmless agreement before artwork is left in the gallery.

•Accepted art must remain on display for the entire duration of the show.

Youth Resources’ 6th Annual Big Man On Campus Male Pageant

Youth Resources’ Teen Advisory Council is hosting their 6th annual Big Man On Campus fundraiser! Big Man On Campus (BMOC) was created by high school student-members of the Teen Advisory Council to promote high achievement and confidence among high school males and the local youth community. The pageant allows young men a chance to share their talents and receive recognition for their achievements. The pageant’s purpose is not to judge outer beauty, but to highlight those young men whose distinguished character and integrity make them an important figure on their high school campus and local communities. Contestants will highlight their talents, smarts, charisma, and school spirit in BMOC’s four show segments. The contestants will be scored by local community leaders, and the audience will vote for their “Crowd Favorite.”The cost to attend is $5 for youth and $10 for adults.

Youth Resources’ Teen Advisory Council is comprised of 100 local high school students from the public, parochial, private, and charter high schools in Evansville and Castle in Newburgh. These young leaders meet every other Friday morning at 5:55 a.m. to plan community service events, develop their leadership skills, and connect with like-minded peers and adult mentors. TAC members involve themselves in our community through service and fundraising events, leadership training, and civic engagement.Teen Advisory Council members provide more than 2,500 hours of community service during each school year. The economic value of these high school students’ investment in our community is over $30,000 per year!

 

Since 1987, Youth Resources has engaged more than 148,028 youth in community service projects. Through Make A Difference Grants, Vanderburgh County Teen Court, the Teen Advisory Council, and TEENPOWER Leadership Conferences, youth from across the tri-state are engaged in community service, leadership development, and substance abuse prevention. Youth Resources exists to inspire and develop our community of youth to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and civic engagement.

Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to learn about a variety of different topics related to engineering in this summer’s iEngineering 2.0 Summer Experience, June 1-12.  This is a half-day program sponsored by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center (SICTC). Students in the program will focus on topics related to engineering, manufacturing and architecture. Students will learn about:

  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Software
  • Career awareness in science, technology, engineering and math
  • Architectural fundamentals
  • Electro-magnetic motors
  • Introduction to engineering concepts

 

Students also will attend a field trip to a local manufacturing company.

IS IT TRUE we watched with amazement the give and take conversation between the Mayor and City Council  concerning the proposed downtown Hotel at last night Council meeting?  …we thought the Mayor handled himself well?  …Although, It appeared the cost has again gone up and the city will be contributing more to the project than the City Council had allowed?

IS IT TRUE we commend the City, Evansville Sports Group and Convention & Visitor’s Bureau for a tremendous NCAA Elite Tournament at FORD CENTER?  …the hospitality and professionalism at FORD CENTER was unsurpassed and a shining example of how Venue Works operates this wonderful facility?

IS IT TRUE the political drama shall continue as the ERC meets tomorrow morning when the final contractual issues concerning the proposed Hotel comes before the board?  …we expect the “taxpayers watchdog” Cheryl Musgrave to ask the pointed questions while other less than involved Board Members look at the ceiling or tweet on their cell phones?  …Cheryl was truly a very good City Council appointee?

IS IT TRUE we were extremely impressed with Old National Bank President Bob Jones presentation concerning the Hotel project at last night City Council meeting?  …in  our opinion,  Mr. Jones presentation to the City Council was the turning point that garnered the much needed City Council support for the Hotel project?  …we were also surprised and impressed when Mr. Jones indicated the contribution from Old National Bank would exceed $10 million dollars?

IS IT TRUE we were not impressed that several City Council members failed to ask any questions, nor participate in the hotel discussion.  …we had to wonder if the 2nd Ward City Council Missy Mosby member and At-Large member Mr. Weaver was even present at last night City Council meeting?

IS IT TRUE that last week Missy Mosby not only refused to participate in the recent 2nd Ward Discussion on CCO and Woods and Woods Tri-State Voices TV Show, then misrepresented that she had only been given 48 hour notice when there is proof that she was notified ONE FULL WEEK in advance, given alternate dates and even offered her choice of dates for the taping?  …once, again, Missy failed to be honest with the public and voters of the 2nd Ward and showed her fear of her opponent and her unwillingness to discuss the important issues of the 2nd Ward in the only televised appearance of the campaign?

Riecken Challenges Winnecke’s Half-Hearted Statement on ‘Right to Hate Law’

Demonstrates Lack of Leadership and Conviction

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke’s expression of concern over SEA 101 came after the enactment of the controversial measure by his fellow Republican, Governor Mike Pence, late last week.

The Mayor spoke out after an epic wave of negative attention had already swept across the state, and fear and disappointment had engulfed thousands of Indiana residents whose lives have taken on an added measure of fear due to this ill-conceived law.

This troublesome measure was introduced into the General Assembly on January 6, and had been steered through the General Assembly by Republicans, who acted in lockstep with the Governor.

It is disappointing that the Mayor apparently wasn’t aware that this bill was ultimately destined for the governor’s desk.

The Mayor’s concern only came after public outrage reached a fervor. If the Mayor had concerns, he surely would have taken the opportunity to communicate this to Governor Pence and his Republican friends in Indianapolis during the legislative session.

Whatever the reason, and for whatever the motivation, Winnecke’s position condones the law as “Right to Hate.” It reveals a lack of compassion and understanding for the vulnerability thrust on some segments of our society.

Leading from the rear is easy. As the old adage goes: If you stand for nothing, you fall for everything.

Now, at this late juncture in this unfortunate controversy, I urge the Mayor to communicate directly to Governor Pence and urge him to undo this bill that was just signed into law. The citizens of Evansville deserve a leader who is willing take a stand.

Alcohol a Factor in Three Separate Overnight Crashes

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating three separate overnight crashes, all believed to be the result of drunk driving.

The first crash occurred at 10:58 pm on Shoshoni Lane at Crossfield Drive and involved a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that left the roadway. The truck drove through a fence and struck a storage shed. The vehicle came to rest only a few feet from a residence. The driver attempted to walk away from the scene, but was located a short distance away by responding sheriff’s deputies. The driver, Mr. Caleb Lannan, was transported to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

The second crash occurred at 2:17 am. Ms. Makayla Broeker was driving her silver Saturn Aura south on Schutte Road near Hwy 62 when she ran off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled through a guardrail before coming to rest on its passenger side. Ms. Broeker was transported to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

The third accident occurred at 2:20 am. Mr. Randall McCandless of Gentryville, Indiana drove his Chevrolet Camaro off the roadway and into a water reservoir near Rusher Creek Drive and Hwy 41. Mr. McCandless and two passengers were able to crawl out of the reservoir and walk to a nearby business prior to the Sheriff’s Office being notified. The driver and one passenger were transported to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries. Tire marks were located leading from the roadway to the water’s edge. The vehicle was completely submerged and arrangements are being made to recover it.

All three crashes remain under investigation while the Indiana State Department of Toxicology conducts chemical testing on blood samples taken from each driver.

Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “Our third shift patrol deputies certainly had their hands full Saturday night. DUI investigation is a time consuming process, with many protocols that have to be followed to ensure usable evidence is obtained.” Sheriff Wedding added, “Despite our best efforts to publicize the dangers of impaired driving, some motorists either don’t get or just ignore the message.”
