IS IT TRUE we hear the extremely talented and popular General Manager Jason Gregorec is leaving Tropicana-Evansville on May 31, 2015? … Mr. Gregorec is leaving Tropicana-Evansville just after he mastermind the move to bring Tropicana on dry land?  …he brought great new energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to promote new ideas and exciting changes to Tropicana?  …Jason shall be missed and we wish him only the best in his next venture?

IS IT TRUE we just notice that the Courier and Press at high noon posted that Jason Gregorec is leaving Tropicana at the end of the month?  …we are happy that they continue to read the CCO for ‘Breaking News”?

IS IT TRUE our sources made an error when they alleged the percentages of the Homestead Tax Credits that have been given to us the past few years were: 2014-6.66%, 2013-6.16%, and 2012-7.05%?  … we got tired of waiting for the City Controller Russ Lloyd , Jr to share some light if  the above figures are correct or not?  … we contacted the Vanderburgh County Auditor office to see if our published Homestead Tax Credit percentages were correct?  …we found out that our sources were wrong?  …according to the Vanderburgh County Auditors  office the correct Homestead Tax Credit percentage  are: 2012-6.15, 2013-6.65 and 2014-6.21?  …we now wait to hear from the Mayor and  City Council Finance Chairman if a 8% Homestead Tax increase was recommend and approved for 2012 to 2014?

IS IT TRUE  we were informed by a couple of Evansville Fireman that advertising is being allowed to be printed on the back of an emergency vehicle?  …we checked out their complaints and found indeed they are correct?  …the advertised message printed on the back of a Fire Department SUV vehicle is “Proudly Supporting the Evansville Fire Department and our Community”?  …that this advertisement is printed on the back of Fire Department SUV vehicle #13-09? …could it be possible that this vehicle was donated to the fire  department by the auto dealership in lieu of advertising?  …we wonder what our readers think about this practice?

IS IT TRUE we have also have been informed by the same Firefighters that at the downtown Fire Station #1,  select fireman are allowed to do maintenance and major repairs to their personal vehicles inside the Rescue Squad storage building? …we wonder what our readers think about the policy of  allowing Fireman fixing their personal vehicle on city time, city property?

IS IT TRUE that Waco Texas police asked rival motorcycle gangs on Tuesday to put aside their differences after a weekend brawl at a Waco restaurant?  … the brawl left nine people dead and 18 injured, that led to the police calling for a halt to the carnage and threats of revenge attacks?   …we wonder why the local WACO police keep babying these thugs and finally stop trying to be nice to them?  …do your job and lock ‘em up?

IS IT TRUE on Monday evening at the City Council meeting, we observed citizens upset about funds for animal care not being accounted for? …we were surprised that some citizens thought City Council was responsible for the problem?  …the person who is totally responsible for this lack of accountability problem is none other than City Controller, Russ Lloyd,  Jr?

US News gives USI’s MSN program top marks for veterans

According to new data released by U. S. News and World Report on May 19, the University of Southern Indiana’s Graduate Nursing Program has been ranked 32nd in the country in the category of Best Online Programs for Veterans. The rankings, now in their third year, identify 737 programs that provide veterans with high-quality, flexible online education options.

The MSN program, offered by USI’s College of Nursing and Health Professions, strives to prepare nurses at an advanced practice level, who demonstrate professional leadership and foster a research climate in the practice of nursing. “We are pleased to offer a graduate nursing program that provides flexibility as well as a value-based, quality education for our Veterans,” said Dr. Ann White, dean of USI’s College of Nursing and Health Professions.

To qualify for the Best Online Programs for Veterans rankings, an online degree program had to report participation in two key programs that offer educational benefits to people with military service. The rankings methodology requires programs to belong to institutions that are certified for the GI Bill; they must also belong to schools participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program or to public institutions that charge in-state tuition for all out-of-state veterans. To be ranked, programs also had to be among the top 75 percent of schools in the overall 2015 Best Online Programs rankings, which were released earlier this year. Those programs were assessed for various factors, including affordability, faculty credentials, student services and reputation.

“The University of Southern Indiana has always prided itself on the programs and relationships that it offers to veterans of all eras, both on and off campus,” said Joel Matherly, manager of USI’s Veteran Support Services. “This ranking is just another testament to the dedication of our faculty and staff in the College of Nursing and Health Professions and our campus as a whole.”

USI’s MSN degree offers specialty areas for Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Nursing Education (NE), Nursing Management and Leadership (NML), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), and Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (FPMHNP).

The College of Nursing and Health Professions also offers online courses toward a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree with two areas of study concentration: advanced practice and systems and organizational leadership. The practice- focused doctorate prepares experts in advanced nursing with emphasis placed on innovative, evidence-based practice that reflects the application of credible research findings.

Both programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

American Flag Retirement Services Offered

Students at Oak Hill Elementary School’s Building Bridges Club, offers an American Flag Retirement Service.  Worn out flags given to the school will be retired with honor at a retirement ceremony.  There is a box in the front lobby of the school to collect flags or they may be sent through U.S. mail, to 7700 Oak Hill Drive, Evansville, IN 47711.

 

Although the last day of school is Friday, May 22, the buildings will be open and a variety of school personnel will still be working through June 1.

Justices find nature of murders supports death penalty

A Gary man who shot and killed his wife and her two children at close range will remain on death row, the Indiana Supreme Court concluded Wednesday.

Kevin Charles Isom was convicted of three counts of murder for the 2007 shooting deaths of wife, Cassandra, and his 13-year-old stepdaughter, Ci’Andria Cole, and 16-year-old stepson, Michael Moore. All three victims were shot multiple times with various weapons. The SWAT team responded to the incident and eventually gained entry to Isom’s apartment, finding him in a bedroom with the guns and blood from all three victims on his clothing.

The jury recommended the death penalty and the trial court sentenced Isom to three death sentences to be served consecutively.

In Kevin Charles Isom v. State of Indiana, 45S00-0803-DP-125, Isom appealed, raising several claims, including that certain for-cause challenges of certain jurors should have been granted; his jury instruction on voluntary manslaughter should have been given and allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.

The justices rejected all of his claims, finding no error by the judge to not dismiss certain jurors and the lack of sudden heat to support an instruction on voluntary manslaughter. Comments by the prosecutor during the penalty phase – that Isom failed his wife as a partner and his children as a father – stepped over the line because it is misconduct for a prosecutor to request a jury to return a death penalty for anything other than the mitigating factors are outweighed by the aggravating factor or factors, Justice Robert Rucker wrote. But Isom did not object at trial to the state’s remarks and they do not amount to fundamental error. Any harm done by the remark was minimal and not substantial based on the other evidence, the justices held.

His death sentence is appropriate given the nature of the crimes, but the trial court erred in imposing consecutive life sentences. The death penalty is not a “term of imprisonment” that would allow for the imposition of consecutive sentences, so the trial court exceeded its statutory authority by ordering the death sentences served consecutively, Rucker wrote.

The case is remanded for the trial court to issue a new sentencing order.

Democratic Chairman Contends Bosma and Winnecke  Ignore Students Who Need IU Med Center Most

Vanderburgh County Democratic Chairman Rob Faulkner today challenged the Republican Speaker of the Indiana House and his fellow Republican in the Mayor’s office to stop posturing and be forthcoming with Evansville residents about the IU Med Center project.

“House Speaker Brian Bosma is back in Evansville this week, and we can expect him to continue bragging about supposed accomplishments of the Republican-led legislature this year, when their most prominent accomplishment was to trash the state’s image. But it’s also a good bet that he will heap praise on Republican Mayor Lloyd Winnecke for leading the IU Med Center project,” Faulkner said.

The Democratic leader points out that Bosma and Winnecke have yet to fully explain the downsizing of this important project through the exclusion of Ivy Tech Community College and the extensive student population it serves. “It’s clear that it’s about politics and weak leadership,” he said.

Winnecke views the approved IU Med Center plan as adequate, but he doesn’t admit that by cutting Ivy Tech out of the project, Republicans are denying a life-changing opportunity to many who need it the most, Faulkner said.

“Working adults needing training to get better jobs in medical fields and students graduating high school without the financial resources to attend Indiana University, University of Evansville or even University of Southern Indiana will be left out,” the Democratic chairman charged.

Faulkner said Bosma and Winnecke should be forthcoming about why Evansville is now facing such limited benefits from this transformational project, and why so many individuals will be deprived of a chance to improve their lives by getting training at this innovative facility.

ST. MARY’S MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY OFFERS FREE MAMMOGRAMS FOR THOSE WHO QUALIFY

St. Mary’s Mobile Digital Mammography is coming to your community soon. St. Mary’s is the only facility in Evansville and the only Tri-State hospital to offer mobile digital mammography. Digital pictures can be magnified, adjusted and previewed to see certain areas that regular film cannot. There are fewer retakes and sharper images. Digital mammograms use less radiation, making them safer for patients.  All screenings include mammograms and education about breast health and early detection of breast cancer.

Participants must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • You must be between 35 to 40 years old to receive your baseline (or initial) mammogram.
  • Annual mammograms should begin at age 40.
  • It must have been at least one year since your last mammogram.
  • Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance are accepted.
  • Assistance is available for those who qualify.

St. Mary’s received the “Sharing the Vision: Early Detection of Breast Cancer” grant from the Greater Evansville Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation, and the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust “Power of  Hope” grant,  which helps fund the screenings.
