Presenters from Reggio Emilia Italy to Lead Local Workshop

0

Friday, March 20 – Sunday, March 22

9 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily

Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center, 1901 Lynch Rd.

Discovering the world around them comes naturally to young children and serves as the foundation for the curriculum used in the EVSC’s Early Childhood programs. This curriculum, the Reggio Emilia Approach, follows the natural interest of students and builds upon it, allowing students to take an active role in their learning.

To help EVSC and local educators enhance their instruction, representatives from Reggio Children will be in Evansville beginning Friday to lead a three-day workshop. Amelia Gambetti and Lella Gandini, both of whom are presenters from Reggio Emilia Italy and who present all around the world, will lead the workshop.

More than 200 educators have registered to attend from at least four states.

One Book One Community Announces 2015 Selection – Orange is the New Black

1

he One Book One Community Committee is pleased to announce that Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Woman’s Prison by Piper Kerman is the book selection for 2015. The book chronicles what Kerman calls her “crucible experience”—the 13 months she spent in the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut.

A brief dalliance with drug trafficking while she was in her early twenties sent Kerman to prison ten years later on money laundering charges. In her compelling, moving, and often hilarious book, she explores the experience of incarceration and the intersection of her life with the lives of the women she met while in prison: their friendships and families, mental illnesses and substance abuse issues, cliques and codes of behavior. The book also raises provocative questions about the state of criminal justice in America, and how incarceration affects the individual and communities throughout the nation.

Piper Kerman to Speak Nov. 4

One Book One Community will host author Piper Kerman on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Victory Theatre, where she will speak about her book. This event is free and open to all.

Television Series

Orange is the New Black was adapted into a critically-acclaimed Netflix series of the same name by Jenji Kohan. The Emmy and Peabody Award-winning show has been called “the best TV show about prison ever made” by The Washington Post and was lauded by Time‘s TV critic James Poniewozik. The show’s third season will premiere this summer.

Orange is the New Black is available in a variety of formats for loan through the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (EVPL) or for purchase at Barnes & Noble.  Library discussion groups will soon be underway and several educational and social events surrounding Orange is the New Blackwill take place in the coming months as Southern Indiana prepares to read the same book and listen to Kerman when she visits in November. Visit evpl.org/onebook for more information.

About One Book One Community

” Classic ” Ann Landers

0

Dear Ann Landers: My husband and I have been married for 15 years. We have a wonderful marriage and two terrific children. The problem I am writing about involves my husband’s brother. He is gay.
“Rick” is a great person and a devoted uncle to our children. Until now, we haven’t had a problem with Rick or his live-in companion, “Dennis.” Our children think of Dennis as their uncle’s friend. The two of them have been together for 20 years. Everything was fine until Rick and Dennis decided to get “married” and asked our 9-year-old daughter to be the flower girl at their wedding.
I am raising my children to believe that marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman. I do not want my daughter to participate in Rick’s wedding. My husband feels the same way. In fact, he doesn’t even want to go. So far, the only comment my daughter has made is “I am too old to be a flower girl.”
I am not prejudiced against gay people, Ann, but I do not condone that lifestyle, either. Please tell me what to do. — Dilemma in the Dairy State
Dear Dilemma: Gay couples who wish to have a ceremony to celebrate their union should not be asking a 9-year-old to participate. It would be too confusing. A service for those in the inner circle would be OK, but please, no children. Tell your brother-in-law that your daughter will not be participating. (P.S. I agree with her that a 9-year-old is a bit beyond the “flower girl” range.)
Dear Ann Landers: My husband is a wonderful man, 56 years old and highly intelligent.
He had an ingrown toenail that was red and swollen and looked infected. I suggested he soak it in hot water and try to cut as much of the nail as he could.
Well, Ann, I caught him soaking his toe in my good crockpot. I went ballistic. He insisted that a little hot water and soap would clean the pot up just fine and I had no reason to fly off the handle. I threw the contaminated pot in the garbage. The next morning, I discovered he had put the pot back in the cupboard. I took it with me to the office and threw it out there.
Was I wrong, Ann, or am I married to a man with the brain of a flea? — Grossed Out in Stockton, Calif.
Dear Stockton: Sorry, dear, but you threw out a perfectly good piece of crockery that would have been OK after a thorough scouring.
It could be that after seeing your husband’s infected foot in the pot, you could not bring yourself to cook in it, but actually, the problem was more in your head than in the pot. Should your husband get another ingrown toenail, ask him to use an aluminum pail instead of a cooking utensil.
And while we’re on the subject of toenails, they should be cut straight across. Sorry if I ruined some breakfasts out there, but this information is something you need to know, folks.

IS IT TRUE March 20, 2015

57

IS IT TRUE that sources inside the City Water Dept. have confirmed that Superintendent Mike Duckworth has officially resigned to accept a position with Commonwealth Engineering where he will earn in excess of $100,000 per year? …we congratulate Mr. Duckworth on this tremendous opportunity? …we also await to see which Republican insider will be appointed to Mr. Duckworth’s old job with the City Water Department?

IS IT TRUE that while we are talking about the Water & Sewer Department, we have to note that over $1,000,000 in new political patronage jobs have been created over the past four years in this department? …while Water and Sewer rates have increased with alarming bills, the salary expenses have increased at an even more alarming amount? …we wonder when the City Council will take a look at these increases, new positions, tremendous raises and take action to start reducing these costs? …it is common knowledge that the Evansville Water and Sewer Department is a political breeding ground for political patronage and “pork barrel” politics?

IS IT TRUE that one of the major accomplishments heralded by the Mayor is the cloverleaf at US Highway 41 & Lloyd Expressway? …the planning on this cloverleaf began over 10 years ago and land was purchased long before this administration took office? …we must ask the Mayor how he should be credited for a long planned state highway project that was planned, engineered and paid for with state funds under the direction of INDOT and not the city?

IS IT TRUE the Mayor proudly proclaimed that he had spent less than $5 million dollars less than he was budgeted? …unfortunately, the Mayor forgot to tell us “the rest of the story” as Paul Harvey used to say? …the Mayor collected $10 million dollars less in Revenue and failed to inform us of the millions owed in unpaid taxes from the TIF districts? …he also forgot to mention that over 22% of the loans issues by DMD were not collected? …we say stay tuned, we will soon report who was the largest recipient of loans that failed to pay?

IS IT TRUE the City Council, with the recommendations from DMD have issued millions in tax abatements over the last ten years? …unfortunately , some of these companied have failed to adhere to the terms outlined in the tax abatement documents? …its time for a complete audit and review be conducted and every effort be made to revoke some of these abatements and recover taxes that should have been due? …one of these such companies just announced plans to relocate a major part of their downtown operations?

IS IT TRUE the city may be forced to proceed with “demolition by neglect” of the River House Hotel and McCurdy Hotel if they don’t proceed quickly in forcing the owners to proceed with these projects? …the time for these delays are long over due? … we need action NOW?

IS IT TRUE our “Police Mole” has informed us that the FOP didn’t contacted 2nd Ward City Council candidate, Steve Davis that they had endorsed his opponent, incumbent City Councilman Missy Mosby? … Mr. Davis was not given any opportunity to talk with the FOP leadership to express his views, answer questions nor in any way talk with them before this decision? …this decision was made  by the FOP because Missy Mosby blindly supports every FOP budget request submitted to City Council over the last several years?

IS IT TRUE we thank you for your support and look forward to bringing you the news in a way that not only brings you into the discussion but makes you feel compelled to participate? ..the CCO is alive and well and remains your community watchdog?

Just before midnight on Monday, March 16, 2015 a Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputy noticed a suspicious vehicle in an industrial area located on the north side of Evansville. The vehicle was observed in the area well after normal business hours.

Due to the suspicious activity, the deputy followed the vehicle and then attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area south of Flightline Drive on US Hwy 41. The driver refused to stop and a short pursuit ensued. The driver later stopped the vehicle in the area of Petersburg Road and US Hwy 41. An Evansville Police Department K-9 unit arrived to assist and the driver, Mr. Mark C. Smith II, was taken into custody.

An inventory of the vehicle was conducted, which resulted in nearly 500 pounds of marijuana being recovered. Due to the large quantity of marijuana, the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Joint Drug Task Force and the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) office were contacted to assist in the investigation.

The DEA and United States Attorney’s Office are working with local authorities and are considering filing federal charges against Mr. Smith.

ARRESTED:

Mark Chris Smith II (pictured above), 26, of Indianapolis. Dealing Marijuana Greater than 10 pounds as a Level 5 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement as a Level 6 Felony and Driving with a Suspended License as a Class A Misdemeanor.
