I recently invited families from our community to spend the day with me in Indianapolis. They had the opportunity to meet with state leaders and spend time learning about the Statehouse. I was so pleased with the number of families that participated, and I hope they enjoyed this experience as much as I did.

The day began beneath the Statehouse rotunda which is where the tour kicked off. During the tour, families visited Indiana’s Supreme Court, learned about the history of the building and got to spend time in both the House and Senate chambers.

Later, the House Republican Intern Director discussed student opportunities. He mentioned that any student, 13 to 18 years of age, has the ability to page for the Indiana House of Representatives and see a full day of legislative activity. There is still time for those interested in being a page to fill out an application for this session. Parents and students were also informed about the House Republican internship program which offers paid internships in our Member Services, Communications, Technology and Policy departments. This internship provides experience as an active participant in the legislative process while working closely with legislators and developing professional skills. Although this internship runs during the legislative session, which is nearing the end for 2015, this is always something to keepin mind for next year.

Family Day was also a great chance for constituents to meet with Indiana Auditor Suzanne Crouch and Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann. With both leaders being from southern Indiana, it was the perfect occasion for both women to talk with Hoosiers from back home as well as discuss their role as an elected official in charge of a statewide office.

Lastly, families were invited to watch session from the House gallery. It was particularly special because I was able to present the Evansville Spirit Cheer team, who had also joined us for Family Day, with a resolution on the House floor. Through inspirational cheers, the resolution recognized the members and their coaches for raising awareness about children with disabilities.

It was a pleasure to spend the day with both local families and Spirit Cheer of Evansville at the Statehouse. I hope the families that visited enjoyed their time, and I would like to make this day an annual event moving forward.
